I just found out about this album a few days ago and had only listened to My Indigo and Crash & Burn before now and this…THIS…wow…her voice and charisma are so incredible. She really puts her whole heart out when she sings. And also from a technical standpoint, being able to still hit the high notes she does after so many years is an indicator of really healthy technique and voice control, which is impressive for someone with little formal training. I know she wrote this during a rough period during her life and when she was having major writer’s block for the next album of Within Temptation, and I love that she knew herself and respected herself enough to step back and just write what she felt even if it wasn’t going to fit WT’s sound. It’s really indicative of what the whole group values as artists that they want to grow and explore and try new music even when fans might complain that it’s not like the old stuff. And even knowing that she writes a lot of lyrics for WT songs, it’s still majorly impressive that she struck out on her own like this. Whenever you react to Crash and Burn, I really think you should watch this live version: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKSbmtymeqaTnKw.html It’s just so moving to see her so calm and in the moment as she sings, and how even after all this time together the band still can’t help but smile when they watch her.

The magic of Sharon's voice is that it immediately demands all your attention. Doesn't matter how loud she sings. Great album all the way. Very personal and sensitive.

A couple of years ago Sharon den Adel went through a rough patch that turned in to serious depression that lasted for about 2 years. She even separated from her long therm partner (Robert Westerholt) a relations that started in high-school. They were able to work things out and are back together again. When she finally got through it it turned out she had written songs to work through her issues. She started to play the songs to family and friends and all told her to release it. This resulted in her first solo album called My indigo. I have known for years that she wrote a lot of the lyrics of Within Temptation but yet was seriously impressed by her song writing skills. A great example to take a look at is "Out of the darkness"

Honestly there's no denying she has the voice of an angel but her lyrics? That's what I'm in for. Well at least a great part of it. I mean I'm not exactly right in the head probably but the way she gets you kinda? Like this whole song and also Mad World with "Can't control the restless part of me" and also Shed My Skin with "Save yourself from their collective projection" and don't even get me started on See Who I am and gah. I'm so in love with her as an artist it's not even fair

It was not so much their relationship which had Sharon down in that period, it had more to do with her father getting sick and passing away. She did break up with Robert around 2007, but they got back together.

Love that song. I remember she listed Florence and the Machine as one of her influences for the album and on Black Velvet Sun in particular I can really hear it.

OK so two things. One, this is my fave song from this album but I gave you Crash and Burn as an option because I thought that's more your thing kinda? But I was kinda hoping you'd do this one and you did! (though you should totally do Crash and Burn too) And two, I told you'd get hooked didn't I? I mean it's hard not to but yeah :)
