Do you think this will work for my barrel horse? She is great off the pattern, I just put a little weight in the back end and she will rate and with a verbal que, stop. BUT, if I am try to work the pattern and lets just say lope her through the pattern, if I try to slow her down she starts crow hopping. She is 100 % mare and she gets a reminder on the ground once a week that I make the decisions for both of us, but on the barrel pattern she does not concur, she thinks she knows more than me. She may be right, but I can not let her know that :) Any advice?

@@heatherpalacios5364. A horse, in this instance, your horse, can only do what his/her rider tells him/her (the horse) to do. In regards to your horse walking through the pattern that she always will be made to take at a run during competition. Every time she’s out of the shoot, you are giving her the signal to run, as fast as she can, around the barrels. And then, all the sudden, out of the blue, you want her to walk around the barrels? That’s very confusing.

Third Ryan Rose video I have watched today and am asking myself why. I don't have livestock, don't want livestock but, still find this interesting.

Thanks for the reminder! I bought a mare last year that is all-go and no-whoa, and it sometimes gets frustrating! I've tried to circle her and am constantly doing a one-rein stop to try to avoid pulling on both reins, but my focus was always about getting her under control instead of redirecting her energy. I like that redirecting energy perspective much better, and it makes much more sense now to me :)

I've got a green pony with no brakes. It's hard to have the courage to give her her head but what you say makes sense. Thank you, I'll be brave next time 😊

Thank you Ryan. Being first taught, English, really set me back. Years now using split reins has taught me one pressure at a time, of the mouth of the horse to digest.. Thank you!

our mustang mare was a train wreak! once she got going there was no woah or turning! Once literally bounced her off an arena wall, but it didn't slow her for long! she bent up bits of all kinds....but not because she was emotional...we think whoever had her before only ran her along a fence untill tuckered out completely. It took YEARS of letting her run out untill tired then ask for speed for her to understand it was ok to walk because the day is long and I had as much energy as she did! she passed last year due to failing health at 34 but up untill we retired her at 31 she was still the go to horse for any job on the rance or doing gymkanna on! The kids loved her but they lost interest in ridding. I'd take her along just for the mental entertainment and light physical work to stay in shape. It might take time and lots of what feels like backtracking but most get it pretty quick...our fire breathing dragon though was one heck of a fun partner to work with.

So helpful. I've been learning on a retired barrell horse and have been struggling to get him not go full speed out of the gate.

Very helpful. I just bought a ranch horse that was ridden in a spade bit. I’m transitioning him to a cowboy dressage horse. I have trialed him in a snaffle and a mylar bit. I have way too much contact. He is doing all the things that you just described.

Yep, happened to me when I was a kid on a trail ride…very scary…thank God the trail boss caught up with me and helped. I never forgot it.

The outdoor arena at my stables is almost 2x the length of his. I have a tendency to let my girls loose to get some exercise on their own since both are not broke to ride. The youngest of my two is only 2 years old, but she gets super excited when let loose to run, and I am 100% convinced that she will have a speeding problem undersaddle😂 I don't find it to be a bad thing that she loves to run but when the time comes to ride I definitely want some control over her speed. This video helped clear a few of my questions up about how to do so without pulling on both reins. Thank you

I know this video is older and that you have a patreon account for questions, but it’s not something I can afford right now, so hoping you possibly see this. I have been riding this horse that tends to speed up at the back half of a circle. I only really ride her in the round pen because she doesn’t have a lot of control and rating. I’ve been practicing your groundwork suggestions and it’s been helping in other ways, but today I rode under saddle and tried these techniques, only if you take her into a circle on a loose rein to slow her down, she speeds up even more and even broke into a canter a few times. She’s very forward and speedy in her gaits and has kind of hit a plateau in terms of taking next steps since she lacks the control and collection. Hoping you have some advice!

With my new mare , she is full of energy and wants to go go go , if I try to ride loose rein she will speed up till she's in a full run even in a circle she just wants to go fast, but she hasn't been ridden much in the past 2 years before I got her , so I think she will get better with more ride time

Just got a TWH who’s owner only rode him at a trot or gallop, he thinks when someone gets on it’s time to RUN! I have a lot of ground work to do installing buttons, he dosent know how to flex or backup gonna be a few weeks but we will get there! :)

When I’m first starting this pattern I usually turn the same way. Once the horse has 2-3 rides with this pattern then I’ll turn either way. Thanks

I'm always looking for video's about teaching them to be tethered. So I can ground tie them if I need to when out on a trail. tied in a field or open area for grazing. Not just leaving them with a hanging rope but tying them to a tether, Can you do one about this ?

I use Bosals, myler snaffles, and low port shanked bits mostly.

My twh was a go go kind and i finally worked with a trainer ( i had been doing at home parelli after hours. 100’s of them cds and lprojects to do right) and after a month i rode her and she was still go go. I used a one rein slow pressure and the trainer said no let her go but i didnt and she perceptibly slowed and i released. That, i thought, is how i want to ride. Ya know? I knew too well her brain leaves her feet at faster walks and this walk….not HER natural choice kept her brain engaged as well as offering me a comforting ride. I feel if you want a reasonable thing from your horse its good to go for it. Most trainers are bad news to be honest. For fun this trainer taught her to spin like those cow horses. Using MY turn to a stop rein. First time i turned to stop after that month she went in to spin. I nearly came off almost. She finally stopped. Hell. I had to get off i was so shook. Thanks trainer. If i live again and get to do a horse i will always watch the trainer train IF I decide i need help. She can go go out in pasture…..which she usually didnt. Always picking the path of least resistance and taking her thoughtful time. Made me wonder if she might be a little lame. If you only want mosey at the walk then train your horse to walk only when being ridden. I started at 50. I was very interested but i knew my limitations. Slow to respond. Not nearly enough hours in the saddle and a hot dangerously herd bound horse. My dream was to go riding solo ….im a happy loner. But i wouldnt be alone if i had my mare. She was the wrong one for THAT but i learned sooooo much from her. Shes 21 now and im 68. The 2nd most important relationship i developed in my life. First being my kids. 3rd. Husband …ex ha ha. I got her just turning 3 with one month natural horsemanship. She wouldnt stand to be saddled at first and was always bobbing her head in impatience about things. I ended up doing ground work most the time or riding in a corral with obsticals. I got us at liberty on all ground games in Parelli. Should have done in hand shows. Her manners were great unkess she was in heat. Then the usual not so calm thing. Anyway….impulsion and relaxtion. Yeah. Thanks . Your explanations are as good as Parelli and i think hes the best. I doubted my horse would ever choose a slower walk so if i get to try again ill try this

We still don't have the level of emotional fitness that I want; I tried to leave it "ugly" (a longer rein) for a long while to let her find self-carriage, but was convinced by trainers to "support" her with contact, that she was a horse of a different stripe. ( I did two years of groundwork before riding). For example, on a contact rein I can make well-timed light half-halts to keep her attention, and she has improved, which was chaotic on a longer rein. She is much more relaxed with steady contact, rates herself for short distances, but still furiously rushes fairly often. I don't know if she can get to the level of emotion fitness that I want with so much support. Darn! Your mare seems not to be remotely the same species! (however lovely, nice mover!) as my very energetic, extremely sensitive, thinking constantly, let-me-do-it! mare. Suggestions?

Mine did this today no matter what I couldn't get his attention on me. It was so frustrating. Ugh but ill.donmy best to keep trying.

I can't ride frikkin circles on long straights when there's a river on one side and a forest on the other, places like that is where my horse wants to do dragster races. I have really soft hands, but when he goes into racing mode, I have to pull real hard to stop him, seat wont work and whoa neither. I guess he's just got too much energy and fun racing.

My horse suddenly sped up on the trail leading to the stable and broke off into a full canter. His energy was so strong it was hard to pull the reins and I had to focus on holding on. I think I panicked with made things worse…now I’m afraid to go out 🥺

Interesting, I haven’t ran across that before. But I would bend the horse and disengage the hindquarters when they start to go faster.

My horse is a standardbred and she paces so fast when she gets exited- I’m gonna try this to slow her down

Can I ask, have you done a video on teaching young horses how to steer? I'm breaking in a 3 yr old, and she's not understanding my aids, and I don't want to confuse her.

I was able to teach my mare slowing down in the arena and she is great there, but once I take her out, first she doesn't want to go and after we get little further, she speeds up and doesn't stop, tries to run, I've had her for six months and we were able to fix many things together, but not this. I don't really know what to do with her anymore since I bought her for long trips outside and we cannot do safely even the shortes trips. Sadly I think I'm gonna have to sell her :(

My horse tries to speed up on turns so what should I do?

My horse is fine inside pasture or around farm but hard when off property when we are trail riding. Any suggestions for tighter spaces (narrow trails with other riders)??

LoL. My trainer said this was emergency brakes.

My horse walks, trots, and lopes 19mph no slower no faster.

i’m currently on my arab mare right now, and she will not slow down, and runs through the reins anytime i ask for a faster gate. i’m currently riding in a halter because she gets angry with a bit. she uses a happy mouth french link, and she constantly rips at my hands in it. i am going to try snd use barrels and poles to make a smaller space in the arena as i don’t have access to a small space. i already do a lot of the things in the video but she still has the same problems. she isn’t anxious, she is just so excited. she’s 24 years old and has always been very spirited. any tips would be great!

My horse does great with slowing down EXCEPT when I try to rope faster cattle (fairly green roping). Does great on the dummy, tracking, and slow cattle, but when I have faster cattle, I lose ALL my rate. Can you make a video on this?

but what are you supposed to do when your horse won’t slow down at a lope? The trot it understandable but my mare has a very fast lope, sometimes she tries to make it a gallop even. I would really appreciate some info on how!

All I ever got with a trail horse was faster circles. I have had better luck bring them to a halt then backing them up for a count of 5 bring them to a stop and ask them to step off on a loose rein. When they break from a walk to a trot repeat.

I watched a guy do circles for 4 hours on a trail ride once, he had some fast circles at the end of that ride.

Have you ever had a horse that had arena anxiety? I have a horse that is amazing on trails. I can always rely on her. But when it comes to the indoor and round pen, she gets anxious. I have done circles, roll outs, transitions, and she seems to rushy. An advise?

My pony is fine alone. She's very responsive. But in a group of horses, it's a very different story.

What advice do you have for me when I do try to turn in my horse is still going forward. Her head is been but she her shoulder is still going forward.

I do not own a horse or ride . But it seems the cinch is very loose. Is this something that contributes to the go go go problem? Thanks. I really like the way you train horses

Trudy. I believe you are observing the back cinch, & yes that cinch should allow a few fingers gap for comfort and acts as a safety feature to hold the saddle level to the horses barrel. The front cinch is tightened snug for saddle stability.

I searched your KZread channel and couldn't find any information. But, what about spurs? Why and when do you use them, and what's the proper way to use them? Are they a 'must' on every ride?

What is “leg position 3”?

If Mine gets super amped up at the lope and I have a hard time keeping him in the direction I want, is it best to do this at the walk/trot until we master the impulsion?

You won’t master impulsion that way but it’s a great place to start

Gotta shift ‘em into neutral and then gradually apply the brakes.

Hi Ryan, when doing ground work with our youngest stallion, he is good in pasture, I can point and move his back end both sides, I use my finger to back him up, he ground ties very well; yet when I open the gate to take him out of pasture he looses his marbles, I have to wait for him to run out of stupid, so we can get to moving from A to B, and yes he’ll be dragging his lead, how do I fix this?

is there not enough space to just do a small circle with one short rein? if not, then its okay to pull back with strong half halts and sinking back in your seat. once your horse slows, i like to back them up a few steps then let them stand there for a second to think about it before continuing on.

What if they brace against you and won't turn atall? My horse once did this, nose in the air, off he went. He's bitless because of teething issues. Do you think plenty of lateral flexion would solve this? Thank you

A horse has to be comfortable enough to learn. If their to emotional you would want to prepare them well on the ground and then focus on controlling the hindquarters when riding until they get relaxed enough for this exercise in the video. Thanks

Depends on the horse. I’ve never seen a horse freak out with spit reins. They tend to like them better in my experience but like I said, depends on the horse

My horse is very energetic and I have tried this method before. When I’m doing the circles, to slow him down and yes that does work but my horse will eventually just stop when he wants to with his head still pulled to either side I’m working with him on and it doesnt seem like it’s working cuz I have been trying.... any other suggestions???

Instead of circles try the sharp turns and be in small enough area for it to be achievable. Hope that helps.

What is your view of helmet and safety vest for beginners? I see all Western riders got cowboy hats and all British style riders got helmets and safety wests… but should safety equipment really be style oriented and not chosen from a safety perspective no matter what the style one ride!?

why is most everyone teaching riding with both hands on the reins? has neck reining gone out the door..? i want to play with my phone while riding.....how can i do that if both hands are on the reins? seems the cowboy riding has been taken over by the english riding style where the pressure is on the horses mouth all the time.....bad bad bad....

?? The only time he has contact is when circling... the rest of the time the reins are loose. Luckily, as an English rider, horses are my way to GET AWAY from technology, so I don't need a free hand. 😂
