The worst part is it's still a rip off in the UK; £9000 split between 2 semesters, with 12 weeks in each, and around 13 lectures each week lasting 50 minutes each equates to £34.62 per hour of teaching

In the UAE education is all private & expensive for expats (around 85% of population). The cheapest option for secondary school (not uni) is about EUR 4,000 per year, whereas the most expensive ones can reach 18,000-20,000! So, 9 k for uni doesn't sound that bad.

Top tips for choosing a uni. Go for a city you feel comfortable living in and are excited about, and don't just look at the main uni e.g. Nottingham but look at the smaller unis in the same city, e.g. Nottingham tent which is just as good. Chose a course you're passionate about, not necessarily what you feel pressured or think you should do. Don't pick a uni just because your friends or partner is going there, you'll make so many amazing friends. Also some tips for those going for housing for after 1st year, start looking as soon as you figure out who you want to live with, probably around nov/dec, so you can get the best house for the best deal. Don't just go for the closest to uni or the best looking, read the contacts and find the best deal so you're not overpaying. Landlords for student lettings can be really sketchy so do your research.

Went to Edinburgh Uni - graduated in 2015. I liked the city a lot but I would have chosen differently if I had the chance. I was the only Scottish person on my course and everyone else was from very rich upper class English families - of course there is nothing wrong with that but a mix would have been nice. I felt like the odd one out and it made my experience quite isolating.

So true ! The majority of people I know honestly just go for the Uni that's closest to their hometown or in a big city they are willing to move to probably long term. I'm from the South Shore of Montreal, and honestly, NOBODY thinks of going to study in Alberta or in BC, not even in Toronto haha Everyone just picks a Uni in Montreal and that's it ! (Some might try Quebec City, but that's the further they'll go. Otherwise, they would be in a smaller University in a small town and if you're not from there, moving there isn't practical for traveling.) Students have a car and travel the 1 hour drive everyday or they move and get an apartment of their own. I always find it fascinating how Americans prepare for College; how they choose, how many they apply to and how they so often chose one that's outside their states. And then they live in dorms. It seems like such an adventure! Here, in my province anyway, people tend to just pick a Uni near were they live and travel or they move there for good, get an apartment, etc. It's just school, a continuation of High School and Cegep, it's no adventure. I think that's partly why we have less social activities/clubs. Obviously we have some, but since not many people live on campus, they spend less time at Uni and they already have their gym/dance classes/whatever in their city/neighbourhood. School is just like in-and-out. We go to class and then we come back home and go on with our lives. But I don't know how are the universities elsewhere... Maybe there's a reason why people want/need to go to a university that's far from their hometown. Mayber the "quality" or the choices of programs differ a lot from university to university, which isn't the case where I live... Prices are also pretty much the same throughout the province, so it's not a factor in our decision making. I think we have less universities as well, so it narrows the choices. For example, in the biggest city of my province, Montreal, we have like 4 universities only (Ok, they have affiliate Schools, but still...). 2 in English and 2 in French. In both cases one is more science oriented (McGill and University of Montreal) and one is more artsy/humanities oriented (Concordia and University of Quebec in Montreal). Not too hard to choose... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, another point about student satisfaction being so low (coming from a recent graduate!) is the lack of contact hours for humanities subjects in your 3rd and 4th year! Edinburgh is a research-based university, so expect to be doing a lot of research, reading and writing in your own time - I went from basically having a 9-5 day in 1st and 2nd year to barely having 10 hours of teaching a week in 3rd and 4th :') Don't let that stop you from pestering your lecturers and tutors - they are more than happy to sit down with you and talk!

I lived in Pollock and I must say that the stereotype isn't quite correctly. There are people who obviously have quite a bit of money, but the thing is that there are so many houses that it varies a lot: people who didn't stay in ensuite rooms paid way less and pretty much the same or a little bit more as you did. Nevertheless, there was a lot of diversity within the people who lived in ensuite rooms; There are people who are rich (nevertheless not stuck up at all and very, very down to earth) and other people that were average. Pollock is a fantastic way to meet new people and it's super, super friendly. Pretty much all of my best friends were made in the House I stayed this year... I was very lucky:)

I went to Edinburgh uni and graduated in 2018 and really didn't enjoy it but only realised after i graduated that it wasn't Edinburgh as a place that i hated it was the uni lol one thing i would say about Edinburgh is that its very academic with a lot of reading and writing and not so much training practical skills where it's clear how you will use them in the future and if thats not something you want from a uni then don't choose it! I'm doing a Primary PGCE next year and chose a way more vocational uni and I hope that it'll be way better for me. I think its also important to consider that even though Edinburgh is a super good uni, it doesn't matter how good it is if the style of study doesn't work for you.

  • @jessica95xx

Erin Stevenson your experience is very similar to me! I graduated with biological sciences in 2018, and with it being a very academic but not really a vocational I struggled finding a related job. So last year I started a masters in dietetics at a ‘poor’ university in terms of rankings, but I’ve already got a job offer for when I qualify! I also agree with other comments about it be very cliquey, from my experience Scottish students weren’t big fans of English students and there were a lot of push people/ Londoners that stuck together. Good luck with your PGCE ☺️

@@sv-bd5em I'm not disputing that it's an oxbridge backup at all! It's more respected by employers than Edinburgh for a fact though, possibly partly for that reason. Both are good unis at a similar level, it's not like they're choosing between them and somewhere 'crap'. You can get a good job from anywhere if you try hard enough but it doesn't hurt to make your life a smidgen easier. Durham has more direct recruitment events etc, and the name can help you tick certain boxes recruitment forms due to its perceived prestige from back in the day when the people who are designing these rectuitment processes were at university themselves. Life is a game, play it!
