Facts brother

I like a choil for sharpening, to choke up on the handle for fine handling, etc. It just gives you more options on how to hold your knife.

I prefer a choil so long as it is big enough to be used. There are an amazing number of knives that have "choils" that are too big to be just the sharpening choil, but too small for anybody over 100 lbs to be able to use.

I’m a No choil guy when it comes to my large chopping knives

I so want one of those Grizzlies !!! May have to pass this time however...going for another WTG release this month. But I do aim on acquiring a Grizzly some day...and the monster Mountain Man, if it is produced. I prefer a large choil... Having XXL/XXXL hands, the extra width of the blade gives me MUCH better purchase/control doing fine work, without the knife turning/twisting in my hand. Very few handles are able to give the control I want without choking up on the blade, for me. Also, for those fine up close cutting cores, I like the edge at my finger like Puuko knives can do. However I will not carry a knife that does not have a pronounced hilt/finger guard...for hard stabby tasks... Choils give the best of both worlds to me.

That is a phenomenal point brother and I am a lot like you

I've really wanted that big boy Kodiak since he first made them back before the WTG deal. As you said, he's been around for years. He just couldn't put out the volume on his own. That's why he looked for a partnership like this with WTG. It's very hard for a regular guy to fork up big money for a big run without backing. Even if he does, it's then hard for a regular guy to then market and sell that big run on his own. Thing is, I have so many big choppers that I don't use already, so I've held off for now on grabbing one myself. I DO want his Forrester though, and will likely be adding one to the collection if they're still available once I've reloaded the knife budget funds.

I love Alexs designs man they are all highly functional! The Forrester is bad ass as well

The choil is always the better option, makes it more versatile.

That Grizzly is a good looking knife.

I have an old Kodiak, without a choil. I like it just like that because the handle is just next to the blade (there’s no big ricasso) and the angle of the handle makes it easy on my wrist when I use the heel of the blade for precision work. I usually prefer to have a choil but this old Kodiak works and that is also a tribute to WTG grinding. This convexe edge is just fantastic; thick enough for chopping without any fear but surprisingly a very good slicer for that kind of knife. The other reason why I don’t need a choil is that I prefer a choil on midsize knives to allow me to use the tip of my knife as I use the tip of a small blade but I don’t use the tip of my chopper that way, therefore I don’t need a choil.

Brother I appreciate the detailed explanation and I agree a thousand percent WTG gets it done and makes knives that are easy to use people don't understand that until they use one

The Wolverine, for instance, I would prefer that either the guard curves down just a bit more so as to be able to extend the sharpened edge a little more so it lines up with the outside edge of my index finger, or a choil. Also depends on where the balance point is. 🙂

If I'm being honest. I like the tone you bring while doing these reviews. You actually put the blades threw their paces a bit harder then most people will use the knives but not so much to abuse the knives. Plus you bring a raw manliness with no apologies kinda attitude, wich in a world of soy boys we definitly need more people like you putting out content. When looking for a new bushcraft knife, one of the features that I require is a choil. Knives with choils are good for choking up on the blade for finer tasks.

The Mt. Lion has a one inch longer blade than the Wolverine.

I would want one with a choil. I have a ton of big knives. When I use them, the ones I reach for the most are the ones with choil. When blades are that large a choil really helps with control. I had a big knife without a choil. I ground a choil in it and it totally changed the dynamics of the knife and is now one of my favorites to use. The wolverine size may not need a choil. Much bigger I'd be 50/50 on one. Great content. Loved this over-view/comparison.

Liking that there Grizzly Scab. Might get one. I'm a choil guy. More control, make that big knife do small knife stuff even easier. Increasingly less and less need for a small knife. I use my multi tool for that if needed. Should have been born in the 19th century...nah, I'd be dead already..lol. Hey that Night hunter is nice too..! Happy work tuff Wed!

Brother! Over the past 10 years there has been a notable change in the typical bowie design, one of those features is the choil and thats just awesome because it came into the design to give a large bowie extra versatility. The bowie essentially is designed to be an alrounder and the choil extends that versatility. I love the choil and works well when you are tryna do finer work.

No choil . More knife, less weak spots. And I've never had an issue choking up on a knife to put work in. But I love how you get the option usually with work tuff between versions. I love work tuff and esee knives! I WILL ADD. My current favorite knife is the work tuff carnivore and that does have a choil and I wouldn't change that design as for me it's a work of art lol

I have the Kodiac on a big copper I don't want a choil the reason is I always have a smaller knife for detailed work and only use a chopper to chop. I like the Wolverine a lot also it's a nice size. Happy WTW it's time to head out and get this job done have a good day.

I asked about that all-important inner grip distance ... and at 4", I think the choil will make this knife design (Kodiak + choil) even better. Pinch grip on the handle, hidden lanyard hole, simple blade shape ... this knife is going to be one of the most universal, all-around best camper/chopper/woodcraft large knives. Good luck Alex with the drop (but this is going to sell itself). Shoutout to DBAD.

Totally support the Oath Keepers!!!🙏 However I am always respectful. I do enjoy and like the choil. Honestly I don’t own a WTG but would love to get some when I get back on my feet. I would really love to own a hemlock Aries, the Wolverine and a Famine. Even Joe X couldn’t break the Aries that’s impressive. And the name escapes me at the moment, but the one that Eric at outer limitless designed.

I like a choil on a blade when I got a short handle that I can’t get a full grip on. I'll take the cutting edge when the handle gives me the grip I want. I've bought knives a straight up donated when I found out whats up. I'll be donating more than all my patreon/memberships combined when the raffle is on. Not doing it to get credit. Just doing it for Donnie.

I like to have the option of a choil. Like man I wish this had a choil.

I like a sharpening cutout...and for the finger chole it would depend on the knife...if it's on a chopper you need one so there is multiple ways to choke up on the knife...if it's smaller no chole but a small sharpening cutout is a must in my opinion on all knives. A choil gives you one extra hand-hold for the finest and most delicate cuts. No choil advantage is more cutting surface as a "Food/Enemy" processor. I prefer a choil at a very nominal cost. Subbing!😁

No Choil. I understand the intended purpose of it, but I don't intend to use a large chopper for that. I'd prefer as much blade real-estate as possible. That being said, I hope I can get my hands on one when they drop at the end of the month. Great content, appreciate all you do brotha!

I love the Wilson and the Grizzly most! I live the design of the Wilson blade and the Grizzly over the Kodiak just because of the extra versatility of the troil . That being said …. If I had to pick any of those knives , I love them all! 😁

I can pull the knife through anything, as long as it's sharp, and it's got a good handle I can get anything done, no need for a finger choil, the Bark River Bravo wouldn't need a finger choil, I can grab the edge of the knife to choke up on the tip, to use the tip for fine task

Depends on what im using it for but usually I'll choose a knife w/ a choil. Just makes it more comfortable to choke up on. If your using a knufr that big you don't really have to use the blade that far back anyway. It's not like you have any shortage of slicing edge right? Lol

I don’t really think a choil is necessary. The blade edge is plenty close to the hand on that Kodiak. I like simple things. Putting that choil on the Grizzly just adds a place for things to catch on… don’t know if that makes sense or not, but I don’t know how to say it any different. Just my opinion, and I’ve handled large (and small) knives since 1969.

As far as a choil goes for me it depends on the length of the knife and the handle with some exceptions. Generally for me though a larger knife kinda needs one while a smaller knife doesn’t

I like a finger choil on big knives as it gives a wider range of uses with the appropriate skill sets. I like a sharpening choil on medium and smaller blades to keep the bevel even. I am interested in the Grizzly, but I am looking for the Carnivore. Does anyone know when the Carnivore will drop??

Well Scabber The Choil Is So You Can Choke Up For Carving Tent Pegs Or L7 Notches And The Like And Those Are Tasks That I'm Probably Gonna Use My Smaller Blade For. I Also Think The Choil Is Just Something Else That Can Get Snagged Up On Shit, Just My Thoughts Brother.

No choil for me. I like to hold onto the handle and "no choil" takes me close, really close to the sharp adge.

A lot of those knives would be good for getting a Grizzly bear off of ya 😜

I feel like a choil is saying you have to put up with the heel of the edge being far away from thumb & forefinger. so if it's off the table than the design has to bear that distance in mind. Plus I am being petty and want more sharpened edge.

For me it really depends on the knife and how its done. I feel generally I can do just fine without a choil however with some knives the choil does really make it nice. If it does have a choil it needs to be a larger knife, choils on a small knife like a Esee 3/4 is silly. That's just me. Awesome video buddy. Got another WTG Mt Lion on its way to me now to add to my medium knife showdown.

I am a no choil guy. I like to have all my edge on my blades. I don't need one to choke up on a knife. Plus, I don't like anything in between my fingers. To me, it interferes with my grip. I don't even like fingers grooves on my pistol grips.

Work Tuff Gear is starting to become one of my favorites..... It's all your fault. 😂 Gotta say once again scabber. I LOVED all the knifes but if I gotta pick a favorite.....it's that wolverine. 💯👍👍

Love the lion but don't like choils if the blade fo to the handle there's no use for a choil .the carnavora is awsome

I prefer no choil on most of my knives. Mainly because I think they look better with out a choil. A choil will make finer tasks a little easier but it’s not worth sacrificing that bad ass look. IMO lol.

Depends on the knife design. If the handle is designed well no choil. Some handles put you too far from the blade or have a distance from the edge on the blade.

I personally hate a finger coil, and a sharping coil, my hand grips any knife so hard I don't need a finger coil. Now if I do put my finger in there it gives me more Leverage to rotate the knife, but my hand is so strong I can operate the knife by using the handle just fine, that's why I like big knives, it's a good one tool option like a Bowie knife

Apologies, I am probably one of those simple folks that bug ya about when/where a blade is going to be available... Just get too excited by cool blades ! LOL !!

Don't need a choil however if the guard is done in such a way that the edge of the, well, edge is lined up with the outside edge of my index finger. Similar to the choil free version of The Grizzly (name has left my brain, I'll go back and look after this comment), but, personally, I would prefer the blade be sharpened the entire length as the blade sticks down far enough that you don't have to worry about catching your finger on it.

Choil or no choil? Hmmmm. Personally, I like choils on some knives and not on others. IF a choil is added to allow better control of the blade for close-up carving and cutting work it is appropriate. If it is added for looks, no thanks. The best way to tell is in the handle design. If the handle is properly designed, then the choil hold will feel natural and when hard using it, there will be no hot spots or discomfort. Choils are very beneficial on longer/larger blades that will also be used for all-around carving tasks. If a blade has no choil but the handle is designed to come as close to the cutting edge as possible, it might not be needed. As a side note, the idea of gripping the blade as close to the cutting edge as possible for small cutting and carving tasks is a very old idea. The cutting tools of indigenous peoples from the East, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, etc., or in Central and South America have their cutting tools, the parangs, and machetes with rather long unsharpened sections so that they can grip the blades forwards of the handles and right up to the beginning of the cutting edge for better blade control in small carving and cutting tasks. Our answer to this idea is the choil. If I honestly had my druthers, I would utilize the Eastern idea on long blades (12" and up) and leave only the last half of the blade sharp so I could choke up on it as they do (American machetes are fully sharpened and are flawed in my opinion due to this). I have quite a few examples in my collection of their blades and talk about purposeful design. They are masters of it. On shorter blades in the 12" and below variety, then I think the choil is the better option as there is not enough real estate to leave a large portion of the cutting edge unsharpened. A choil is required for the close-up work and control. Just my two cents Scab.

Or/and a good folder of some sort anyway. That is better for small work i think. Well I love knives,so I usally carry too many anyway😁👍🏻🔪🐻‍❄️🇧🇻
