My honest but biased Lomomatic 110 review

Lomography sent me their new film camera, Lomomatic 110, and asked me to review it. I did. It took me a while.
I'm not really in a target audience for this simple point-and-shoot camera. But I'm reviewing it as me, not as someone I could be. So, the review is pretty tough.
Had fun, once again, playing my piano. This time 6 sharps -- F#. So, every black key is a right key!

I knew this was going to be a great review! Props to Lomo for their sense of humour choosing you. They knew what they were letting themselves in for - a very fair review Ari, humorous and engaging as you always do. Pulling out the “big guns” (the Pentax 110 SLR) in the comparison was actually incredibly generous and enlightening. I’ll add one more “pro” for 110 cameras; you can hot-swap between film types and only lose one/two frames per swap..

you nailed at the end... asking, "what if you have lost your inspiration?" this is so true with me, and I find myself looking to these alternate form factors and non-coded unusual film stocks. The best set of 110 photos I’ve ever seen…seriously! I love my 110 cameras. Some of the most creative pictures I ever taken were with a Diana Baby 110 & 12mm lens, low light in bulb mode. Printed in darkroom but never bigger than 4”x4”. Fun, creative and challenging. Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope Lomography gets the joke and pay your expenses just for fun!

Thank you for the review, it is great, the one that has given me the information I was looking for. I am thinking about buying it, because my first camera, as a child, was a 110 camera and I have a space in my shelf for a couple of them. Actually, I use them for a project about the lost photos of my childhood, in which I try to take the kind of photos I remember I took as a child, so for me, it makes sense. But that is another story. What I want to say is that I agree that this kind of format and camera help me to be very spontaneous and in this Lomomatic, there is the chance to modify a little bit the exposure, by changing the iso on each shot and there is also the chance to do multiple exposure, and in my opinion, this options make it something different that what is in the market (my current 110 camera is an Agfamatic 2008 and the only option is sunny or cloudy and the shutter). But thank you again for the review, it was really great. I hope you get your bills pay soon ;)

Great review! I'm really happy to see new film cameras hit the market, even in this format. You pretty much nailed the shortcomings of 110 format, which are exactly the same for all 110 cameras. There's one additional problem with 110 to mention: the simplification of the film cartridge means that there is no way for any 110 camera to maintain a consistent film plane for the film. The cartridges are cheap plastic, no pressure plate, and the cartridges can move around inside the camera. Combined with the tiny frame size and generally grainy consumer grade film, 110 cameras were never meant for more than casual photography. For comparison, look at the results that you can get from a vintage 16mm camera like a Mamiya 16 or Minolta 16, which are noticeably better even with a smaller frame size than 110. Love your videos!

Hi Ari, I think this is a very good and honest review, much appreciated. I checked out the cheap colored version and it's just like shooting 110 camera back in the 1980s and 90s so the nostalgia feel is very good, and I think for the small form factor and retro feel that Lomo has done a really good job. It's not a camera for me - for quick and small and cheap I will stick to half frame 35mm like Agat 18K which is scale focus and good enough optic, and I can put any roll of 35mm film in and easily develop without the extra challenge from 110 format for a much lower price. But there is definitely a market for a small pocket camera with good retro aesthetics and the 110 format does really push the "THIS IS FILM" quality off the charts. But the facts as you point out is that 110 is just a really limiting from a technical perspective, and the picture quality will never be excellent even with the best camera and optics. I do really appreciate that LOMO are single-handed keeping the 110 format alive. I think given the limitations of the format it is as good as any other 110 camera with a fixed lens -- and the big thing to me is it is a new FILM camera in 2024 (wow!), we are living in the past! And of course any snowball rolling down hill to make an avalanche starts with a single flake of snow, and I hope it leads to many more new and exciting film cameras being made in the future. Not all of those cameras being made will be for me, but in a path of many steps by many people this is what we can expect.

Thanks for a fun video Ari. When I took my first photography class in 1976 I became enamored of fine grain, using mostly plus-x and panatomic-x on 35mm but I tried out one roll of black and white film in my parents' Kodak110 camera just to see what it would do. At the time I think the only b&w film I could get for it was 400 asa and I was not a fan of the golf ball sized grain it gave which when enlarged made the images look more like pointillist paintings than photos. I imagine that camera had a slowish plastic lens which wouldn't have helped. I have often wondered why Kodak switched from the much larger 126 cartridge to 110 and the only conclusion I could come up with was that the lower material costs for the film gave them a bigger profit margin. Most 126 cameras would fit in a pocket almost as easily as a 110 and their cartridge system was easy to use. My guess is they looked at the fact that almost all home photographers never printed their pictures larger than 3x5 inches (or was it 3.5x5"?) and figured that 110 and later Disc film would be more than adequate for prints of that size. I would be interested to get your opinion on what 3x5" prints of your favorite 110 images look like.

I'm too sometimes tired of chasing "perfect" and "amazing" and "crafted" and in such times I crave that "young" "punk" "fun" "pure" energy. These cameras are perfect for that, I agree. I even liked some pictures from this camera you showed, so I can imagine myself buying that colorful one, but I don't wanna get involved in all that 110 cassettes situation very much. I think you hit the nail on the head, Ari. Having spent far too many hours lurking around the "analog" film Reddits - my first reaction to the pictures you shot was - "This is exactly the "look" many of those noobs are looking to reproduce". So many times I see someone posting an old, grainy, color image from, what appears to be, the '60's or maybe '70's and asking "how do I get this look?" I actually think Lomo may have done their homework on this one - and noobs who want that "vintage" grainy look - I think may flock to this. The one barrier I see is the lack of available processing and scanning . . . . . it's out there but not as widely spread as other formats. BTW - inquiring minds want to know when you get your tickets paid for 😀

I was never a fan of the 110 cameras, but a friend had a Rollei A110 which I thought was an amazing looking thing (I still doubt that the images would have been that great), anyway, a few years later his camera conked out and he gave it to me - it'll still be there in the back of a cupboard somewhere - one day I'll dig it out and repair it and probably then put a couple of films through it before it heads back into the cupboard for another 20 years. Oh yeah, your shots looked pretty good from the Lomomatic, but I suspect you'd make a pretty good image whatever camera you were using.

An interesting assessment which is similar to mine. In the 70s I used a Minolta 110 (not the SLR) and was satisfied only with only photos taken at closer ranges. Landscapes or images nearing infinity were mainly horrid. The smaller the format, the closer the subject needs to be. I was amazed that Leica even sold a slide projector for the 110 format. For whatever it's worth, 23 mm focal length *is* just about normal for the 13x17 mm official 110 film frame (what's enclosed in the pre-exposed lines on the film); the frame diagonal is 21.4 mm, so it's like a 47 mm or so on 35 mm, or 80 mm on 6x6 cm). It's a little wide for the slightly larger full frame gate, which you'll get as a useful image if you manage to reload the cartridge with unperforated 16 mm film (or single perf, with the perforations on the bottom of the cartridge -- either way you'll have to disable the film feeler inside the camera). FWIW, very few if any 16 mm (including 110) cameras have lenses wider than this; a Minolta 16II or Kiev 30, for instance, has a 25 mm (albeit with continuous focus in the latter case, from 0.5 m to infinity, and with fully manual exposure). Even a Minox, with its 15 mm Complan, is close to normal for the 13.6 mm image diagonal. I think the two 110 SLRs (Pentax and Minolta) had a mildly wide angle lens option each, and those are the only wide angles I recall seeing in subminiature. The manual ISO is something rarely (if ever) seen on 110 cameras; most of them are either fixed for ISO 100 (or simple, with fixed shutter and aperture), or depend on the speed notch on the cartridge, which only carries 100 or 400 speed. It will also let you compensate for backlight by setting ISO down one stop (if you're not already shooting 100), and with a tiny chip of ND filter over the light sensor you could shoot slower film, like the ISO 12-50 microfilm stocks often used to reload 110 and other 16 mm formats that don't depend on cine sprocket holes. You can buy 3D printed film carriers on eBay for 16 mm/110 film that will go in place of a 120 strip in Epson scanners (same true for 127, BTW, in case you ever get one of those cameras). These will reproduce the clearance between film and platen glass that gets the scans correctly focused (around 4 mm on mine). I also bought a set of V800 scanning frames for my V850 (actually was using them for a while with my older scanner before upgrading) because I didn't like the anti-Newton ring glass in the V850 Pro set. For my money (just a little more than the plastic version of the Lomomatic 110), I believe my next submini will be a 60-70 year old Minox III (called a Minox A in Europe) or IIIs (the version with flash sync). Smaller, fully manual, and with image quality that's been legendary for decades. With a film slitter (which I can 3D print for myself), I can get six strips to reload the cartridges from a single roll of 120, and hence use any emulsion available in 120. New manufactured cartridges are available, and they're designed to be reloaded by the end user who processes his own film (unlike the 110 cartridge, which was designed to be destroyed during processing and discarded).

Excellent comments! Thanks! Yeah, it felt like a normal lens. And for a point-and-shoot casual tourist camera, I'd really like a wider lens. One of those Pentax Auto 110 lenses is 18mm, and I like it much more! And yes, I worked with the ISO setting to compensate my evening shots to the sunset. Tried to open the shadows a bit .... That reloading etc sounded extremely interesting. It seems you are really pushing the 110 as far as it can get. Respect!!

@@ShootOnFilmUnfortunately, I can't take credit for reloading 110 -- I have only one 110 camera (a Kodak Instamatic 60, auto exposure, but ISO 100 only, and rangefinder focus ) and don't use it enough to mess with reloading the 110 film. I do reload for Minolta/Kiev 16 mm, will do so for Mamiya 16 if I ever get one of my two cameras operable, and plan to do so with Minox once I have a camera and cartridges.

I sold cameras back in the 70's. The combination of the small format plus a plastic lens resulted in grainy pictures. It became easy when customers would not be happy with the results to convince them to upgrade to 35mm.

Nice review of the 110 format. It’s the same result as 50yrs ago, happy snaps, low quality. I was hoping scans would bring up the quality over enlarger but it does not appear to be the case. We used to just twist those cartridges open, do you think they could be reloaded with 16mm? Polaroid still seems best film format to rival the party snaps of digital instant gratification of holding a picture plus you get to watch it come up.

I love 110 format, but you need to embrace the grain. It means I explore textures and contrasts with black and white. I do silly things like taping gels over the lens, over-exposing using bulb. I use it as an experimental play-thing, and somehow manage to get images that I like. More art than tourist, but 110 is also good for tourist shots. I do like that various films look different in 110. Metropolis, for example, looks just right in 110, and much nicer than 135 and 120. I don'y like that lomography backing papers for 110 often have random perforations, so I tape over the camera rear window. I like being able to hot swap film cartridges and only lose a single frame, so I can go from color to black and white or from 100 to 400 ISO film at will. Can't do that with 135 or 120. We used to be able to do that with 126 film also. It is one of the best things about cartridge film. BTW, Lomography sells a camera scanning device called the DigitaLIZA which has masks to do 135, 135 with sprockets, 120, and 127 film, but they also sell an optional 110 film mask to use with the device which also doubles for scanning those narrow 135 panoramas that were common on point and shoots from the 1990's. Very handy device.

I think Lomography knew pretty well why they built in a good glas lens in this one. Imagine what the pictures would look like with their standard plastic ones! But I think they have a certain look even their other plastic cameras in 35mm cannot (re)create. They do really look like taken decades ago. I am one of those who are experimenting with cheap cameras at first. But I think using a standard reusable 35mm could give you more and costs less. The form is unique but basically everywhere they ask for a premium to develop 110film, if they develop it at all. I was instantly interested in this camera but decided against it. It shoots a film format Lomography has a worldwide monopoly on. They could've made it less expensive knowing, that whoever buys it will *have to* buy their film from them exclusively.

If someone need to produce new simple film camera today, why not make: 35mm, hard plastic(but good quality), 28mm f5.6 fixed at infinity(small, really sharp and everything is in focus already really up close), viewfinder(only to compose), manual winding and shutter auto connected to small lightmeter or manual. It can look like small Leica, it will produce really sharp and good exposed pictures and it will be small, light, beautiful and pocketable. Instead they make garbage. For 200 euro Nikon F65 with AFS 50mm 1.8G will produce almost absolute amount of quality that 35mm film can achieve.

Ok, just one question: If you really want to - for whatever strange reason - use a 110 format camera, why not use one of the in fact bordering good of those cameras from the 80s and 90s? Minolta, Pentax, Agfa, Kodak, ..., there are literally millions of those around, some even still in pristine condition, for a fraction of the price of that Lomo camera. Why contribute to the pollution of our planet with producing subpar superfluous iterations of something what is already available in abundance? But well, we are talking Lomo here, a company serving the hedonistic photographer who already has everything and is on the hunt for anything new he (or she) can spend money on. Already beyond the phase of trying to create good pictures, they have exceeded those folly desires and are now trying to challenge the limits of technically bad photography. Each according to his own, yes?

Valid points. However, adding a handful of new cameras to the circulation won't make any environmental difference. And, it is not trivial to find a good quality used camera nowadays. The majority of eBay cameras are broken or unusable -- based on my experience. If you buy a serviced camera, it will cost over $99, since nothing can be serviced with that little money. So, a new camera is a good option for many who are about to start film photography.

@@ShootOnFilm Generally, yes - but we are talking 110 format cameras here, and those were mainly low tech cameras. Low tech means low chance of defect. While it can be hard to find a working technically sophisticated last century system camera, it's quite easy to find a working low tech camera from that time. 1930s Box cameras mostly work fine today as do fix focus or zone focus cameras with three shutter times and two aperture openings, what the vast majority of the old 110 cameras are.

The only point in using a 110 camera is that it is pocketable. This bit of junk from Lomo is pocketable only if you always wear cargo shorts. It's twice the size of most 110 cameras. It has no features not found in the simplest old 110 cameras. It has none of the best features of the best 110 cameras. It costs ten times as much as comparable 110 cameras on eBay. The film costs significantly more per exposure than 35mm film, and when you can find someone to process it, that costs twice as much. The image size is the same as the old, abandoned subminiture format, and the quality is less than acceptable. Lomo started selling 110 format film when everyone else stopped selling it - smart move to serve a limited market. However, notwithstanding that 95% of 110 cameras ever made ending in a landfill, there are many more and better 110 cameras readily available. So, why did Lomo have some Chinese company produce this bit of junk and plow it into the marketplace now? He found image quality between the 110 format and a dirt-cheap Lomo 120 camera "staggering". Well, dah!
