One garage project.
So i decided to build my own panniers. Material is glass fiber.
I have xt660z TENERE and these panniers are for it.
in the end of video,there is a list of all supplies i used for project

They look really really good. For anyone having a go at this can I suggest that you bed in a plate of aluminium, into the layers of the side, where you will mount them to the bike to give much better rigidity to the pannier walls. You could get the same with bolting a plate in but it would be much stronger resin glued in between the layers.
great job. love the vinyl wrap instead of paint
Thanks for data! I think that you have made a gorgeous piece of equipment for reasonable expenses. I will definitely take your project as example for my Africa Twin! Keep on!

Nice wish I could do it 😮
Strong work on this DIY deal. I have a friend with a bike minus some good bags and he has been itching to get some nice hard bags added. His bike value is $2000 on a good day, and the hard bags would run him $1200 after the mounting hardware is bought. We really wanted to go another way and your video will be the topic of discussion the next time we are in the shop. Thanks for a great video!
Yes, great job, a very respectable looking pair of Panniers, i bet you learnt a fair bit about fibreglassing too.
I think they look fantastic, better than store bought, great job
I'm impressed , that looks great
awesome job! im going to copy exactly what you did and give you 100% credit!
They look really good!
Dang, those look awesome as ****!! Great job man
Pretty nice!!! Quite a few years back I tried similar deal, got through one bag and gave up, lol. But you stuck though it and it looks great!

It is hard work and there is many steps that could go wrong. I think i got a bit lucky when everything worked out so well. :)
Wow. They look better than the branded ones out there. Fix some LEDs on them.
FANTASTIC JOB!! Cheers for the inspiration! :D
nice job. I built boats when i was a kid .lots of work.
most impressive !! looks like quality build ! well done ;)
Mate you did a great jaaaaab. Well done o. You could have gel coated the mould first with a colour of your choice, then built up your layers. Just an idea for someone else who is thinking of doing it too. Really good video. Thanks for sharing. Stay groovy.
They look awesome. Thanks for sharing. I'm planning on some custom made fiberglass boxes for my dune buggy, this helps a lot :-D
excellent work sir!!! brilliant ideas, thanks for the video ;)

Wowww😍😍😍😍 powerful 💪
Piękna robota!
Well done!
Nice! You could also use it as a toilet tank and lid. Cheers!
Fantastic.
That's a brilliant idea, I've never thought of using glass for panniers. opens up a world of possibilities. What did they end up weighing when finished?

you can build your own racks out of 15mm copper piping, t juntions and elbow joints using copper epoxy to glue it all together
Very impressed
Nice job!
Very Nice job, Did the resin not stick to the aluminum tape at all, or did you put down something as well to help release? Thanks

Very good Send one here to Brazil for my Suzuki V Strom 1000. Joking, congratulations on the great job Congratulations 👏
I can only see one correction I would make, panniers sets for specific bikes, say BMW 1200, have different size bags on either side to make up for the exhaust coming out 1 side. So at the end of the day when you look at the bike from the read the out edge on either side is the exact same distance away from the middle of the seat. works out to be 44 liters of storage in the right case, 38 liters in the left case, and 31 liters in the topcase.
This was a fantastic build; thanks for sharing! Do you recall what the woven fiberglass cloth "weight" was per yard? It comes in 3oz, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, and 12oz thicknesses at the place I'm shopping.
@kayttajanimi
8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Actually i don´t even know the thickness of that material. As i said,i went to boat builders workshop and i asked him some sort of heavy duty fiberglass and he had solution for my problem. I have seen those in some random hardware stores,but they were much lighter made. I think it would not hurt anyone to use little bit lighter version,gotta be easier to bent to corners. And it is really thirsty material,have to use a lot of resin.
Very food,fantastic project
Great job!

Oh yeah,i used gelcoat in "boat wreck" fix when i was a kid. I am still using that boat. Former owner has busted keel of that boat pretty bad.
Truly incredible! And what a good idea! How do they hold?!

Really well, i don't have that tenere anymore, now i have streetbike with small panniers. But those had a lot of space, they are heavy duty compared for this bmw street bike panniers. I never had a leakage or anything. Still have them - just not a suitable bike at the moment. :D
realle nice :)
Excellent job !, well explained. I new I wasn't the only one trying this. One question, which system (attachment) did you use to secure the pannier to the rack ?, I saw the strap around the panniers but that's just extra security ! It's the rack tube 8mm ?...Great job !
@kayttajanimi
9 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I will have to take some pictures or even a video of that attachment system i made up. There is a strap around panniers because it was my first trip with them. There was a heavy load in them and i thought that extra strap would not harm anyone. I drove in pretty nasty roads or should i say trails. :) But after all,straps weren't needed,panniers stayed on the place with no problem. That pipe,i used,is 20mm with wall diameter of 2mm. I think it is some kind of hydraulic pipe for industrial purposes and machines.

kayttajanimi Great job! I'm also curious to see the attachment system. And I wonder how much strong they are compared to aluminium ones, but I don't think you're gonna drop your bike to show us... :-D
@kayttajanimi
9 жыл бұрын
Hi,Thank you! Yeah,you are right,i will not drop my bike for a test. But basicly,when you drop the bike with alloy panniers you can hammer it back straight,not too many times but couple times... But how well will the lid fit back on,it´s a different thing. I made these panniers fairly thick,so i would say it could survive of dropping. And because of shape of these,insted of basic cubic shape,it should handle that stress caused by dropping fairly well. And if something cracks on these,it is repairable with glassfiber resin,or if needed i can add more layers of fibreglass. I will make a little video of attachment system i made earlier. I haven´t seen similar system earlier,it is simple,safe and strong. :)

@kayttajanimi
10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don´t know really how many hours it took me to make those,maybe little bit over 2 weeks,working something like 2-3 hour a day on them. It´s not too bad to do something interesting and fun. If you are interested,you can actually count the costs,look at the list in the end of the video. Here in Finland those are pretty expensive materials and i did not know how much i will need this and that,so i could save money by buying a WHOLE lot of materials at once,you know. I guess i spent nearly 300 euros in total. It was more that i thought in the beginning of that project,but you never know the final price until its done. It could be less than 200 euros if i would build them thinner (weaker) than they are. Strength is the word! :)
hello, and wonderful project. inspiring. It appears (from one photo) that it is almost 31 liters. Is that correct? Do you remember the size (LxWxH)? Thank you!

Thank you! Actually,those pannier racks are not ready yet. I have built parts for it, but it haven´t been welded,i don´t have welding machine,so i need someone to help me with that. Anyway,that pannier rack will be bolted to the bike. And i have a vision how to make those panniers easy removable. But soon it shall be ready. Weight of one pannier is 5,2kg (11lbs),not the lightest ones because i made them strong,not light. Weight is pretty much the same as same size aluminium ones would weight.

Two layers of carbon wrapped in fibreglass is stiff, yet resistant against cracks. Similar characteristics as glare©
WOWWWW
Hi, I'm very impressed: congratz for your excellente job!!! How many euros do you ask for build the same boxes and plug-n-play rack and attachment for my Honda XL200R Paris Dakar? Thank you in advance for the reply. Ciao.
CSM or chopped strand mat has much better omnidirectional strength compared to rovings. Roving has good bidirectional strength the trouble you were having with the csm is you were using to light a grade of CSM in OZ we rate our glass at 100 csm or tissue we call it here and 225 csm 450 csm 600 csm it looks like you started with 225 and that's fine for the first layer. The next layer use 450 csm and it will start getting stronger. Your boat supplier would have the heavier glass weights. Have you thought about spraying gel coat first, it would save you a lot of hassles with sanding and filling latter on you can also paint gel coat on with a brush. Your panniers turned out great some piccys on the bike would have been sweet cheers.

Hi,master Wu. Gel coat really is a great way to hide some surface imperfections. I built a cafe racer "rear bump" for my suzuki couple of moths ago,and it was a great help. There is couple of pannier pictures on the description (link to photobucket). It was my first trip with these panniers,and of course there was a massive load in them - so i decided to secure them with straps. Totally unnecessary,after all. I can say that couple of trips later.
Very Nice.... About the rack to?
