Dealing with Hermes sound like an abusive relationship with a narcissist: always walking in eggshells, the mind games, the breadcrumbling, the future faking, making you feel like you are not worthy of their attention unless you make all they want (buy all the overpriced junk that that otherwise they won't be able to sell), etc. Is it a bag worthy of such treatment?

I don’t want to have a relationship with someone who works in a shop. I work in Tesco, I don’t have relationships with people I see weekly. I chat to them, some speak to me about aspects of their lives. But I don’t hide sausages from them, and they have to sweet talk me to get a discount, or a special order I’ve hidden in the chiller. Wise up fools.

What I think about the whole "journey" and its absurdity? I've written the following little poem after watching your video... Dear Big H, Please treat me like dirt Sell me those Orans so my feet get hurt Take all my money for blankets and glass And shove my quota dreams up my … you get the hint. I cannot call you, I cannot write, Gimme that bag, do not treat me right, I will be on my knees just to get my Togo It’s about the beauty, I swear it’s not the logo… Really, really, really, I need that bag I’ll give you all my money, don’t care about the tag And even if it takes years of scarves and dishes A Clémence leather quota remains in my wishes, I will let you make me sad, I will let you be that bad, Just give me hope for whenever it might be That my quota bag will end up with me. ...sad, isn't it? Yep, it is. Hence I am NOT a fan of this brand and their tactics.

I hope I don't offend , but for one let's stop calling it a journey it is adults basically begging for a store to let you buy a bag. It is people buying things some don't want and need to get a bag that is for sale in the store. As for being grateful, they should be grateful that people will spend their money in their store with all their nonsense. The tactic maybe to have the client come in and if they don't have what you want they can entice them into something else.

I’m not sure it’s really about whether you truly love the brand or not anymore. They seem to want to get rid of the type of customer who has to save for a bag, they would rather sell to people who can afford to buy loads of unwanted items without having to worry about the money. The brand seems to be at its peak at the moment, maybe because of Chanel’s issues and ridiculous price increases and it’s become the influencers favourite brand, so it’s going to be harder to shop there at the moment, unless you do have that unlimited budget. Perhaps in a few years you will have more luck getting items. You definitely have been lucky with your previous SA’s and it’s great you’ve got your bags. If I were you I would forget about them for now and perhaps try again sometime in future. I too love bags and when I get one in my mind, it’s hard to accept not getting it! But when you step away for a bit, it adds some perspective of is it really worth all of this.

What really gets me is those that have purchased pre spend items decide to sell said items, others seem to act like the Hermes police and reprimand the person for selling their OWN items and even go so far as to contact Hermes corp office to “tell” on those that sell. I mean if one has purchased 20 twillies, 15 pairs of shoes, 10 belts, 20 pieces of jewelry. Why can’t they sell it, if they are not using the items? Don’t get me started on those that seem to think you are a second class citizen for purchasing pre loved… I mean if a BKC cost 8k in store plus pre spend 8k= 16k in store…if pre loved BKC is 16k?…. What is the difference?

I have been shopping at Hermes since 2016. I have many gorgeous quota bags, which like you I got easily (perhaps too easily!). I think the UK system is the most fair globally, despite it being difficult now. I think part of why they’re being more difficult, is not so much to deter true shoppers like me and you, but rather to deter resellers. The resale market, especially in the UK, is flooded with sought after bags being sold at 3x the retail price. I really think the price increase, plus the rumours of 1 quota per year, are really to reduce the number of bags sold on resale. I think the trend will change soon enough and the hype will die down in a year or two. Stay the course. Keep the relationship, even if not much comes of it, I’m quite confident in saying eventually something good will come of it

  • @Wildunfiltered

Hermes' theory is ridiculous. They are famous for leather goods so it's natural that people only want leather goods. That's how people support and admire their know-hows. They are indirectly telling people what they are Not good at by making people buy other non leather goods. In my younger days, my professor told us to only purchase an item from a brand that they are famous for. Meaning, if we want a watch, we go to Rolex, Omega or Longines or the likes, we don't go to Hermes to buy a watch. Luckily I am not a bag person and am happy with LV and Versace bags. I have no intention of joining the games. I would choose Moynat or Delvaux for high quality leather bags. Or it's better to get an exotic leather bag from other brands than being played by Hermes.

Kanye gave out a bunch of to Julia Fox n her friends at birthday party n Drake passed some out at a concert. You're buying the name and not the bag. There's no way the bags cost that much to make, so I'm sure they have the funds to gift bags for marketing purposes to validate their brand. They are selling a fairy tale, and not the bag. Also, the super rich don't buy these items - they're often gifted to give the impression famous people want them. Famous people already have the feeling of being elevated above everyone else. It's often the middle class who buy them.

I feel that the issue is that “the game” became much more competitive due to social media in large part and “bottled up” demand for luxury shopping during pandemic. Not judging, please know that. To each their own. It just is mind boggling to me. I think if I ever get a Hermes bag, I would want to get it on the pre loved market. You may not agree but I have to say it. Hermes only want a select group to carry their handbags to maintain a certain image. SAs have a quota to make. They are going to sell to the customers they know are going to help them make those sales goals. With that said certain customers may not fit into the Hermes customer mold. In order to control it , they are managing the bag offers from a central location. The main reason the secondary and pre-love markets have become popular.

I agree . I remember Kylie Jenner's vlog in which she showed one of her biggy rooms filled with Kellys and Birkins . A great advantage of buying a Hermès handbog on pre-loved markets is the fact you can find and buy your dreamy model ( colour, size, type of leather , hardware ) . Even though the price is higher it will never catch up with the amount of money you have to spend at a Hermès store before being put on a waiting list / being proposed one that usually does not go with personal taste .

I have an SA not in my hometown and she told me the same thing regarding being in the store. I understand as she would rather service the person who is standing in front of her. It used to be otherwise but as the brand is becoming more and more popular they can dictate their terms. Essentially the demand far outweighs the supply so they have to be gatekeepers. The pre spend becomes crazier as new customers spend more and more. I don’t think you have to get into that game. I love my H bags but I like my other bags from other brands equally. You have to decide your budget and go with the brand that fits that budget. Hermes is easily three times any other luxury store and you have to figure out whether you can spend in that range. They are not forcing you to come into the store.

Quite a few popped up online before Christmas but not in the colour I want (they were vermillion and some sort of cream that screamed ‘colour transfer’ at the top of its tiny lungs) and you have to be quick. However I did find more than one SA who is very nice and straightforward in the US. I'm shopping with one of them and I loved that she is very direct with me with the pre-spending. I am, however, always respectful and presentable. I do hope things change. Hermes is the brand for me because I truly love the esthetic of the Kelly and Birkin, specifically. I don't buy fashion items because they're in - they have to suit me and I have to truly love them. That's the bottom line. It's just all so disappointing and at times even hurtful.

The only thing that changed in my POV is the demand. That’s largely due to social media. This leaves H in a position to use quota bags as bait to make customers buy more of their other products, and to shift attention to wealthier clients (see also what Chanel doing). Given this is business (and not about who ultimately appreciates the brand/products best), it makes sense to focus on relationships with customers who have the highest purchasing power… that’s all.

I think they are now offering bags to people who purchase from other departments and not just "people they like," to make it more "fair." She goes out of her way to maintain contact, as I do for her. It’s an easy, comfortable and organic relationship. Of course I know she wants to sell, and she knows I’ll sometimes want unusual bags. But we have a great mutual respect and enjoy each other’s company. If LV ever instructed staff to ghost clients it would sour my view of LV. Having amazing relationships with frontline staff is an integral part of the experience, I don’t think I’d be as interested if this was taken away. My two cents 🙂

Hermes is smart. That's how I feel. They know due to the exclusivity and the madness around their items that they don't need to anything differently. It's human nature to want what we can't have or want what most others can't have. At the end of the day, they are just bags and their are bags that are as beautiful (or more beautiful) out there that are accessable. Frankly, I think Hermes can treat their customers however they wish. If an abusive relationship is what sells, then it's the right choice for them. They are not your friend, they are a business trying to make money. I know you can like the Birkin style, but I still think it is more about the brand than the bag. Fashion can't be patented, so you can always commision someone to make a look alike with the same quality without the logo. That is perfectly legal. There is no way that would cost more than 2k, less than 10% of the branded cost. I was personally once an avid Kate Spade fan during college due to the animal designs. I went into a store a few years later and was treated very poorly, even though I was making enough that I should've "upgraded" my brand of choice. I just didn't go back, and that's alright. This happened many more times for me, and I just moved on.

the thing about physical stores is that... they're physical. you have to physically go there. most businesses in the world are physical. hermès at least has a website. only some restaurants and cable channels sell by phone, that's what comes to mind. your sales assistant was being kind to you. she had interest in being useful, sure, but it was not on her job description.

I fully understand that it’s a physical store but most brands now have e-commerce capabilities etc. I love going into store but I don’t live near so it’s not going to be regularly. Also to add something to an electronic wishlist used to be a matter of a WhatsApp or an email to my SA - it’s now a matter of going into store etc. My issue is that it has changed and with no explanation.

hermès does have e-commerce capabilities, although limited. that's the norm for luxury brands. at goyard, i.e., there's nothing you can by. but i'm sorry that the change in procedures harmed you. it's just that the current procedure seems very normal.

It’s a shame to take away the personal relationships between the customers and the SA’s, like that’s their biggest commission I would think, bridging the bag to the client. I feel for the SA’s as well with already dealing with unkind people to now this which would make some people outraged. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the market if they drop a few points or not, but then again there’s the ultra elite out there that doesn’t have a problem getting what they want.

That people could just assume you might have been rude to a sales associate is ridiculous. Hermes has a labyrinthine, changing system based upon artificial scarcity, which could be somewhat remedied if more artisans were trained in the ateliers and kept on staff. Nobody who treats staff with respect should be treated disrespectfully. Overconfidence that fuels arrogant haughtiness from these stores and the brand will kill the brand if enough people become disaffected with poor treatment. The Arnaults had better take note.

Wouldn't it be more honest if Hermes bean counters just doubled the price of quota bags and sold them outright off the shelf? It seems to me that the execuse that some of the Hermes fans for Hermes to have this "game" or "system" is so Hermes can weed out resellers, I'm not convinced with that execuse, surely they do want to reject customers who are resellers, but I think that's not the only reason why they have this game. IMO they do this to increase the level of exclusivity of their bags, and to increase their sales revenue by "influencing" customers to buy products other than their Birkins. There are so many genuine customers with or without big spending history, who have a really hard time getting their bags.

Saying you aren't a true fan if you don't purchase from the different departments is one of the most idiotic comments I've heard. I have no desire to own a Hermes bag, so I don't play the game, but I adore the scarves and scarf rings. Being interested in one aspect of a company's offerings makes you a fan of that. Purchasing everything for an opportunity to purchase a bag makes you either someone with an incredible amount of disposable income, or a complete fool.
