I just love how serious you’ve taken this - so many people have the surgery and just think they don’t have to do anything. At my first 6 week post op appointment we had a group nutrition and a group psychotherapy class. I had lost about 40 pounds and there were other people there that had surgery within a week of me that hadn’t even lost 10 pounds. Then at my 3 month appt I was down about 70 pounds (just like you) and the others were around 20 pounds down. I didn’t do anything but exactly what the dr said. I loved how you also talked about the transference of addiction from food to something else. At the psycho therapy they said those exact words. Secondly, you talked about the pain from your pouch high up in center - that is the pouch being too full not dumping syndrome. Like if I eat too big a bite of chicken breast and don’t chew it well I’m doubled over with that exact pain you mention. I lost a lot of hair at about the 6 month mark. I actually ended up cutting it to a long pixie style around that time. When you start losing hair it’s too late to adjust your protein intake bc hair loss reflects nutrition intake frOm the prior 3 months. So extra protein to prevent hair loss is really needed. Only thing I really want now is skin removal. Been saving for ages to get those procedures!

I am always so happy for you and this journey when you talk about it. My mom had it done 15 years ago and it was the best decision she ever made. Her life is so much more full and productive, where the weight just really limited her. She has never regretted it. When you do go to try rice, use more water than it calls for and do canned coconut milk if you can. This has worked really well for my mom after her surgery. When I make jasmine rice I typically do 2.5 cups liquid for every 1 cup of rice and we think it's because the rice can expand more as it cooks rather than when it reaches her stomach. She has to be careful with bread and pasta, even 15 years later, but it's much better now than it was when she first had her surgery. Constipation: If you are able to take more magnesium that is great for it, too. That way you skip all the other stuff that are in laxatives (which are usually magensium). Also, be sure to stay on top of your vitamins. It will be easy over the years to fall off of them, but as you get older you will realize why they were so important.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing this very personal journey with us. I wasn’t a subscriber yet when I came across your surgery video today and I have been considering bariatric surgery for over a year now, but all I’ve focused on are the bad experiences of others. You’ve been honest and forthcoming about not only your negative experiences but your partner’s, yet you’ve highlighted the positives along the way and I *so* appreciate this. As fat-bodied people we are often shamed for even CONSIDERING surgery to help us live a healthier life, which I think has made me focus on the negatives, almost like a punishment? Now that I’ve watched your vlogs and seen how much quicker recovery time is than I originally thought, so now I’m going to speak with my GP about my options. Thank you again, Catherine! ❣🥰

Hi Katherine, for constipation try to go easy on the fibre and just add a little more fat, like butter, to your meals. It will be a lot easier on your digestive system and make things glide smoothly. Start with small amounts and increase as needed.

I didn’t have gastric bypass, but I was intubated for a while and on a feeding tube earlier this year due to a pulmonary embolism that caused a brain bleed and a stroke. As I recovered and came off of the tubes, I experienced a lot of similar things when readjusting to normal foods. I am eating a normal diet these days, but I eat much smaller portions and eat more frequently. I have also noticed the same issue with meat. If there is no gravy or sauce, I have a very difficult time chewing it and swallowing it. Most of the time I end up spitting it out. Bread, too, is a problem. I eat wraps instead of sandwiches now, and just try to avoid bread as much as possible because it will just sit in my mouth and refuse to go down. One thing that I have found to really help me at meal times is to eat my proteins first. I also chew everything as much as possible and tend to take a significantly longer time to finish my meals than I used to. I know that these issues can be really annoying to deal with, but I know that despite their different causes, we will both manage dealing with them.

Two questions: when you say you’ll ”stop” when you get to a certain weight, what does that look like? You level off at how many calories you eat/increase daily calorie consumption? Does gastric bypass get reversed when you reach target weight, or will it bypass for the rest of your life? Congratulations on the weight loss, it is fascinating to see your transformation. You *always* have looked great, and I’m happy you are reaching your personal goals toward health and fertility! Continued best of luck to you (and Dean)!

I have three friends who did this. It is just to teach yourself and body that you don’t need that much food as you did before. You have a smaller stomach but this one can stretch again if you don’t follow a proper diet. Two of my friends continued with a exercise and diet regimen until they got to a desired weight and went through surgery to remove the excess skin and still continue to exercise and eat healthy(maybe not as much as before). Sadly one friend(who had it for knee problems) did well until he got to his desired weight but after that didn’t continue a healthy life style and went back to his original weight.

Bypass is permanent. It shrinks the stomach and bypasses some intestines to assist in eating and absorbing less. The process reduces physical hunger and helps retrain the brain to crave less. It still requires a lot of work for the rest of life.

Wauw, this is really great to see ! I would never dear taking this big/drastic of a step because i would be too scared of not being able to eat 'normaly' ever again. My question for you : what do you mean by 'stopping' once you hit yhe point of feeling comfortable with your weight/look/size/... ? Since they took a piece away of your stomach i'd think that this way of eating and living would be for the rest of your life and that there would be no way to stop, so i'm very curious :) Keep up your great journey Catherine, you have done so amazing already !

I had the gastric sleeve done in late 2019 then the world went crazy! it was so hard to be able to eat healthy and get the protein in when you never knew when the grocery store would have what you could eat. I also am allergic to the "diet" drinks so that also took my weight loss more time to come down. I have in "onederland" and I should be around 170 pounds for the weight surgeon to be happy although my family doctor said healthy and happy is all he is concerned with. I like you could do the protein shakes before surgery but no way have I been able to since. They are too heavy lol!

The tlc show 1000 pound sisters, Amy Slaton she had surgery and went back to her checkup around a week later, she had told the doctor that she did good, but she eat a few bites of a sandwich and some sweets. He was upset at her, and told her she could get septic and die, she knew better when her stomach was only held together by staples! Some people don't listen to their doctor, sh pe went ahead and got pregnant a few months later, which staked her weight loss. Then around a year later had another baby after she was told to wait until she lost down to 150 pounds. She agreed but was already trying to get pregnant. She is still obese years later, so sad that some people don't listen

Thanks for sharing your gastric bypass journey!! Before i ask my question, i want you to know that I watched your vlogs since the start of the pandemic and you've been very inspiring and helpful. Im also now a full time small business owner :) Also, you're beautiful the way you were/are!! I am in the same boat as you, struggled with my weight since i was 13, now having troubles conceiving (though i'm told that's not all to do with my weight, more with my hormone disorder). however, fertility has been the thing that's started the ball rolling on a healthier life. I'm looking into gastric bypass as well now! You mentioned in the video that when you reach the weight you're happy with, you'll 'stop'. could you explain what that means? What will you do differently to 'stop' since the bypass is a surgery? How do you lose or maintain the same weight after gastric bypass? Thanks in advance!!!

"Birth to the antichrist"...hilarious! Same!! I am a few weeks post-op from bypass and, the first time I went after surgery, I said at that time that I felt like I was giving birth to a small child! The next time it was large rocks! I have since been taking a stool softener capsule daily and it has helped tremendously.
