My Full Legal Assistant Experience 1 Year Later (What I Haven't Shared Until Now) | CHATS WITH ICIE

Below are some other questions I’ve been asked and may not have addressed specifically in this video!
FAQ’s As A Legal Assistant:
What type of law firm do you work for? Employment Law Firm
Did you go to school to become a legal assistant? Not necessarily, but I did study political science with a minor in Literature & Writing, which is considered a “pre law” track by some people.
Did you go to college? Yes, I went to a 4 year university and graduated a semester early at Cal State San Marcos.
How much do you make? $23/ hour with benefits (medical, dental, vision because I am considered a full time employee)
How many hours do you work/ week? 40 hours (Mon-Fri/ 9am-6pm)
Is being a legal assistant the same as being a paralegal? They have similarities, but paralegals are certified and go through a specific training to get their paralegal certificate. Because of the certificate, they are usually paid more, but it can vary among law firms. Both roles assist attorneys during the legal process.
Do you plan on becoming an attorney/ going to law school? At the moment, no. I’ve discovered there are different ways that I can be involved in the legal field without being an attorney and still feel fulfilled with what I do. That’s not to say I won’t change my mind in the future.
Is being a legal assistant stressful? Like any job, there are stressful days or weeks. It can be stressful dealing with clients if they have complicated questions or if you have to stop a task to do something else for your manager, and then come back to it, but I think that’s common with many different industries.
How did you adjust at first as a legal assistant? I struggled a lot with Impostor Syndrome the first few months, but it gets better I promise : )

I have been a lawyer all my life and I feel strongly that the vast majority of law firms provide zero training and expect people to be perfect without giving them enough time to learn. Please don't give up on the law or professional work. Keep trying and know that it's not your fault. Law firms and lawyers are way too busy and are terrible at training. It's them. Not you. Your experience is the same experience as mine over the past 30 years.

Thank you for your transparency! I filmed my 2 year update as a legal assistant talking about this and also encouraging others to be easy on themselves when they first start out.

This gives me so much encouragement. I currently transferred from being an office assistant to a legal assistant for our litigation team. I have been dealing with some of the same issues you mentioned and knowing someone has been in my shoes makes me feel better about my current situation. There hasn’t been enough time to train me properly but I will not let this discourage me from doing the best that I can.

I didn't know! Maybe that's the best way to train as an office assistant before training as a legal assistant. Following the film footage, I think there's lots you can do at home on your own with Microsoft where I think that's where you first start to help prepare yourself for the training course so that you can learn quick.

Congrats to almost 600 subscribers, and you can be super proud of yourself 🎉 And good luck on your new path. As a foreign paralegal something that I am also very interested in would be how many vacation days you had in your legal assistant job?

  • @lifewithicie

    @lifewithicie

Thank you so much!😊 At this law firm, there wasn’t really a set amount of vacation days per se. I did take 2 vacations because they were planned well in advance before I was hired so my manager accommodated me for those days off. I think in my case also there was someone else who could take over my work if I was away so I think that also played a factor. Besides those 2 scheduled vacations, I didn’t take time off so it seemed to me that it was a on a case by case basis and if there was coverage available.

I think there's lot's you can do on your own with Microsoft at home to help prepare yourself with a training course; for there's a lot of tutorial KZread videos I know I can use, to show me how to use Microsoft; for I know I can use Microsoft in my email which is probably the best place to start, for people who don't have experience to probably first start off training at Tafe (college) as an office assistant. I think that's the best place to start and the best way to learn quickly is at home. Do you do any international language translations as a legal secretary, I know Microsoft does. But when working in a legal firm, does Microsoft do a good job at that?

Good for you for moving on! The crux of it is that now you can have the hope that your work will be acknowledged and appreciated. The toxic law firm culture is very real. "Real" businesses do not seem to suffer from the same plague.

Hi, I've found your channel looking for information about legal assistant program, but I also find you accent and pronunciation exceptional. Are you a native speaker of english? How did you learn to speak with that exceptional fluency and pronunciation?

Thank you so much for those kind words! I was born in the Philippines, but was raised in the US since I was 2 so that’s why I have an American accent since english was the primary language in our household :) The rest is just practice (I think when you start talking to yourself in front of a camera so much you gradually get more comfortable speaking freely on the spot haha at least that’s been my experience 😆).
