My Fly Designs: Brown Trout Weamer - the Improved version

Спорт

The Brown Trout Weamer is without doubt out of all of my designs, the most effective of the bunch. However, it's been plagued by a wing fouling problem. In this video, I describe how to put an end to the fouling problem without losing any of its fish appeal.

    This is a largemouth bass killer, use it on a super cloudy day in clear water. Thanks for this great fly

    I use bucktail for it's ability to keep feather wings and hair wings from fowling on most of my streamers. Great advice. And your audio was right on with this video.

    Just tried this pattern on spinning gear set up last night. The profile in the water was fantastic!! Only fouled once and that was due to operator error. Tied it in a size 2 low water hook. Going to tye this again except on a size 2 Bartleet hvy hook. Fishing this in a canal with a nice current under tow. The fly undulates like the local minnows. Need to tweak the color and add just a touch of pearl escantances. Thanks for sharing!!

    That's the one thing about this pattern, how well it swims in current. It moves like a real baitfish when we cast across current. You may find that you will prefer the low water hook to the Bartleet as the weight of the latter can alter the swim of the fly. I've tried it and not been all that impressed.

    I learned to tie with 3/0 thread and still prefer it for larger flies. You mentioned mooneye in your list of fish caught on this reamer - that is the fish that started me fly fishing when I lived in Montreal.

    Excellent as always. The wing of bucktail, goat and peacock herl is the same as a Sunray Shadow. The bucktail works a treat at stopping the materials wrapping around the hook. In small sizes (10-12) would squirrel do instead of goat?

    Though it's a bit less mobile, I usually use calf tail for wings on small streamers as it presents a better profile.

    I really like this pattern Peter. Would you recommend increasing hook size for migratory fish and very large brook trout?

  • @hooked4lifeca

    @hooked4lifeca

    I've caught migratory fish up to 15 lbs. on this hook without any problems. Whenever I've gone to a heavier gauge or larger hook, I've not been happy with its swim characteristics. If you're looking for a different hook due to availability, then consider a low water #4 salmon hook.

    Peter, have you caught Atlantic Salmon on this pattern?

  • @hooked4lifeca

    @hooked4lifeca

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes I have. So far it has caught along with Atlantics: steelhead or rainbows, browns, pike, walleye, smallmouth, striped bass, largemouth, mooneye, black buffalo sucker, channel catfish, sheephead, pink salmon, and chinook salmon. I've also had longnose gar hit it, but so far haven't hooked one up. I may have taken rock bass on it as well, just don't remember.

    @@hooked4lifeca Peter, I had my first hook-up for an Atlantic salmon on this fly (Aug 2021)! I did lose it, but that was my fault. Thank you again for sharing your expertise!

    @@nicolelewis1828 Always nice to hear about the fly working for others. With Atlantics, the hookup is the triumph, the landing is incidental, unless of course we were starving. ;)
