Hi rod thanks so much for the informative videos always great to learn from them. I have a question I don’t think has been cover and looking for some advice. I will be float fishing for coho and chinook fishing on the vedder/Chilliwack system. I have a low profile baitcaster reel using braided line. I have read I should have mono backing and no smaller than 20lb. braid. what is your recommended set-up??

Yeah lots of people were out today enjoying the weekend but some walking can definitely lead to solitude. Nina and I ended up going out for a few hours this after to film and we managed to fish three runs all by ourselves, even caught some fish... 😁

those curly tail worms are killer on Pinks! (steelhead also, shhhh)

I did some plunking yesterday since the water was so high and murky. Caught 2 pinks and 1 coho. Released them all because my freezer is full.

Thanks Rod. Centerpinning is awesome, and if I can learn to cast, anyone can. I bought a rod with a downlocking reel seat, used badminton wraps and black electricians tape to cover up the threads on the rod (otherwise your hand rests on the threads, might bother some).... but .. IMO, if using a CP for salmon season, for the love of all that's good and holy, if you're in the lineup (crowded fishing conditions).. please don't drift suuupper long and then take your sweet time reeling back.. those looks you're getting aren't because everyone is thinking how cool you are. After a few years, I prefer to use a baitcaster for salmon season, especially if you're going after springs.

Are there any rod tubes you can buy for gear rods? I broke two rods recently and while part of me wants to replace them with something expensive, I just know they will break in transport or storage

Hi Rod, I am just starting fishing and have been at it for a couple of months but have not caught a single fish! Met some guys on Chilliwack river on the 18th and tehy told me about your channel. I didnt even get a signle bite that day and they maxed out within 4 hours. I watched a few of your videao and went back on Sunday. I lost 6 fish that day. Turns out that a 10lb braid and 10lb mono leader is not strong enough because of the current. I lost all my lures and went hoem empty-handed again. I got stronger gear now so will try it next weekend. Thanks for all the info!

Thank you for the great video, clear explanations and helpful information! I am a newbie to salmon fishing. I used to lake fish for trout, but I would love to try shore fishing for salmon. I know the season is ending soon, but I might give it a try anyway. I have two questions: Do you happen to know the number of grams of the weight you are using on that rod? And are we allowed to use bait for pinks? I thought we were only allowed bare hooks with lures? Thank you :)

Does this bobber and spoon set up works for coho ?

Rod, are the Technium and Convergence similar? The used one I'm looking at is a CVC-M106M2B so it is a 10' 6" 12-20lb medium power slow action mooching rod. Seems like it should work, even if it is a bit on the shorter side for a centerpin drifting setup. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and answering questions!

That rod is pretty much identical to the Technium shown in this video, and I have two of them on my rack actually. It's totally fine to go with your centerpin for rivers. Convergence series rods have been discontinued about two years ago, they are now upgraded to the Clarus series. The difference between the Technium and Clarus is component and blank quality. Other than that, they really are not that different when it comes to fighting the fish.

The purpose of the backing is so you don't have to put as much main line to spool it right up. The backing can stay on the reel for a long time, while the main line can be changed once a year or a couple of years, so you only want to have perhaps 100 yard of main on it, and more backing on the bottom.

Nice video. I love your videos. This is a lot different Way too fish, as we do HERE in Denmark. How Long is there from float too svirvel? Do your hook bounze at the bottom?

Per, the length from the float to the swivel depends on the depth of the river where you are fishing. I like to adjust it so that the hook is at least 30cm off the bottom so it'd drift just above the fish for them to strike.

Hey Rod, in you video on pinks in the Fraser you recommend replacing the hooks on the spoons with open eye sickle hooks. Would you use them on the spoons you are drifting under a float or is there a particular reason you recommend the owner hooks for this application Thank you for your informative posts! Ron

Thanks Ron. The smallest open siwash hooks available are #2, and the shank is still pretty long. The lures used in this video are not big, less than an inch long, which is shorter than those hooks, so I've chosen to use the smaller Owner SSW hooks instead.

Hey Rod, royce here again lol. Could I use croc or coho spoons at the end of this exact same set up or would they have to be these trout spoons to be more effective? Still new to all of this. Dont worry Rod none of your advice you've given has gone awry, I'm jotting all of these into my notebook always in my backpack for when I hit the water haha cheers bud! Haha awesome. So I personally don't really like to hang the bigger casting spoons under the float. They're too heavy to produce any action/movement as they drift down the river. You're better off using them by casting and retrieving, or casting and swinging across the run IMO. There needs to be fair amount of drag/resistance against the current to get those lures going.

That’s a 20g float, match the sinker with it. And I usually add a split shot about 8” above the hook to keep the bait down. I enjoy your channel. Good work.

Hi Rod, I was wondering, in regards to trout spoons, can I use Kastmaster style spoons for salmon in general? Or is the action of the lure slightly different than what salmon are used to?

Hi Brennan, I've never used kastmaster spoons so can't really comment much on that. I think any action from the lure which would grab the salmon's attention is good. I personally don't necessarily believe that there is one best lure, but rather all lures work, just depends on the conditions of the water...

Rod it's interesting that you think an open style spool isn't conducive to give good line control. Rod to explain it better on KZread search stick float fishing in England. Or waggler fishing on fast rivers. The principle is the same and you put some long runs in with great control off the reel some 30 - 40 metres and maybe 30 - 40 yards across too. Here in the UK the rod is longer too. Dave Harrell, David Roberts. We've just had a major comp we call Riverfest. Maybe interesting for your viewing, the principles are exactly the same regardless of fish. We are in Vancouver to see my son for two weeks and are going to get out for a couple days on the rivers. Also you talk about float stoppers. We use sliding knots for what we call slider float fishing that means you can set your depth accordingly and if the fish change feeding pattern depth during the day you can change quickly and easily without damaging line in anyway, could be interesting for you. Look at Alan Scotthorne slider fishing set up. Also you guys are using shorter lengths of rods than we do. Trying looking at bolo rods. With the necessary permits obviously😁😁 would be good to be in contact. Take care and tight lines Kind regards Jim

Welcome Jim! Our family just experienced the trans-Atlantic travel a month ago so we know how challenging it must have been to get over here. The next couple of weeks should be excellent for fishing if you get a chance to come out to the Chilliwack/Vedder River. I am pretty familiar with fishing with wagglers etc actually. In fact I have all the Drennan floats in all sizes from 2g to 20g, Crystal Avons, Wagglers, Pikers, Zepplers.... I'm not sure how to explain it, but the waggler setup etc wouldn't work on these fish in our rivers. I think you'll see it when you get here. These fish and the conditions just put on a lot of strain on the gear. Let me know if you got questions before coming out to fish!

Thanks so much for these videos Rod. They are immensely helpful. I did have two questions. FIrst off, could this float arrangement work on the tidal side of the capilano river? I was out the last couple days and didnt see anyone catching anything (myself included) but there was some pretty good current there.. I figure this would be easier than buzz bombs and snagging (lost a few). My second question is a newby question about etiquette. When float fishing in current, if there are a lot of people fishing is there not a tendency to tangle lines? What is the proper way to float fish with many people? Cast slightly up current, let it drift, and reel in before it gets too far down current? Or do you just need a lot of space. Again, thinking of the capilano.

The float setup most likely wouldn't work too well in the tidal part of the Capilano. At that point these fish are still swimming about quite a bit instead of staging, so you are better off casting lures and covering water. As for the floating fishing etiquette, I like to look around me to see what others are doing first. If everyone is casting straight out and drift down, then I'd do the same and take turns too. If no one is wading out into the water, I'd stand on the bank too. If everyone is doing short drifts, then I wouldn't let my float drift down too much. For a proper drift, I generally like to cast just slightly upstream (11 o'clock) and drift down. I've fished in pretty crowded line-ups where everyone would take turns, cast over each other's float but still following a pattern so nobody ever tangles up.

No problem Tom. So one note about the Cap. Because of all this rain we've had and river level is up (and maybe that's why you saw quite a bit of downstream flow at the mouth?), majority of the coho and chinook salmon are shooting up the system now. You'd be better off fishing further upstream for those fish at the moment, but access the spots with care of course and watch that river level which fluctuates by the dam. Usually this push doesn't happen until early October, but this rain early in the season has changed things up a bit.

@@FishingwithRod thanks Rod. That makes sense. Yes quite a bit of outflow in the cap yesterday and today near the mouth. Was fishing for pinks but didn’t see any nor did anyone else. I’ll look upstream. I’ve never float fished before but I gather from your videos I should invest in a good bait caster as opposed to my spinning reel. Seems like an easier go with float fishing. Funny thing today. While in the cap near the mouth for a few hours I bet I saw about 10 loose floats go by. Wish I had a long enough net. ;). Thanks again

Hello Rod. I'm looking tobbuy my first baitcasting reel. I am lookingat Shimano Curado reels noticed they have few different gear ratios. What is ideal hear ratio for river fishing pinks and cohos? Would 4.7:1 gear ratio be too slow? Should I get a 200 size or 300 size Curado? Thanks.

Float Fishing doesn't work for me, but bottom bouncer seems work. Does this because Pink Salmon don't eat anything when they return to river? I am in Seattle.

I would keep trying. You are very likely to foul hook them by bottom bouncing, which really isn't ideal.

I got back home to Alaska this summer and got at least 50 pinks.

I run 15lb test Maxima Ultragreen monofilament on both the centerpin and baitcasting reels.

What determines the height of the float? Like how deep does the weight sit in the water? Any answer would be appreciated, thanks

Salmon (or just about all freshwater fish species) sit just above the river bed, so you want to adjust your float depth to keep your presentation suspending just above where the fish are. Generally, the float depth/height is about 1 foot or 2 shorter than the actual river depth.

Like any terminal fisheries, all salmon regardless the species can deteriorate as they get closer to the spawning ground and time. You want to keep pink salmon when they are still bright silver. As the season progresses, you're going to find less and less of those, so retention of them is not recommended by that point.
