My Flats Boat - Ankona Cayenne Review

Спорт

Many viewers have asked me about the boat I run for inshore fishing in Louisiana and the neighboring Gulf Coast States, so in this video I review the Ankona Cayenne flats boat I own.
There is too much material to discuss everything in one video, but I try to cover the main topics, such as how and where I use it, it's main features, my experience with engines, it's seaworthiness, and the economics of operating it. I hope you will find this information useful.

    All these years of watching your channel and I didn't know that was the boat you had.😂🤣😂I've been checking out those boats for years. From all my research I've done they are great flats boats. Alot like the hellsbay boats. they both build high quality flats boats. I wish one day I could get one. They are very fine boats and perfect for our La. Marsh fishing. Verygood video and channel you have my friend. Gotta love those speckled trout down south. There's nothing like it.🙂

    Very nice chat. I own 16’ Heron with a 50hp, and with Ipilot. Does wonderfully here in Upstate NY. All the bass fisherman take a second look from their behemoth bass boats. Prices have gone a bit the last few years, it’s still a bargain!

    onthefly salt, these boats fish about the same as bass boats because of the low profile. But I can imagine your Heron looks unusual up there.

    I really like the center console because of its greater height and center positon. I need to be able stand and drive in rough water from the center of the boat. The only thing I would change is not to have the one rear box a cooler/live well. I don't use either and the they put a lot of insulation in that option, so a lot of storage space is lost. Maybe at some point in the future I will be glad for the live well.

    I hear you! I hope my Cayenne doesn't get wrecked because that waiting period would be a long dry spell. The way I managed the 6 month wait in 2013, was ordering the Cayenne before I sold the Whaler I was fishing out of.

    @@JonMillerFishing We really enjoy your videos btw, enough to make me want to get a skiff and get back out there. I've had several boats of various sizes over the years but by far the most enjoyable was my little 16' skiff that I could literally just hook up and go fishing with minimal effort. Wish I had kept it, the big boats and offshore trips were non-stop maintenance and expense comparatively speaking.

    Thanks for this one, since I know I'm one commenter who asked about it. And I agree about the back deck overwash being an issue. My first boat needed a splash well added. One question about the engine. Is the 60hp about getting better speed? Seems like 25 or 30 HP might be enough[and more economical] if one were not too concerned about top end speed.

  • @JonMillerFishing

    el diablo loco poco, I think the Cayenne model needs at least a 40 hp engine. The 50 hp was adequate but I do appreciate the extra 5 mph the 60 gives me on the long runs I make.

    @@JonMillerFishing OK, thanks. Until I can move back down to BiggSwampy, I won't be doing anything like a 90 mile run. Be easier/quicker at 30mph though. :o Looking at doing a plywood and fiberglass project boat right now, but one of the Akona hulls would be a really good choice on the inshore waters here in NC. More tide and shifty sand flats here, so that shallow draft is good. Avoiding big water here, always hated get caught in the short storm chop in Lakes Pontchartrain & Borgne. For now still living vicariously going through your older vids. Good stuff.

    Absolutely killer video. I have one of these boats on order right now, getting the 60 Tohatsu. I feel even better about my selection after watching your video. Very informative video from an educated boater/boat owner. I ordered mine with a atlas micro jack plate, I didnt notice one on yours. Do you wish you had one or do you think its not necessary?

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    I don't think the jack plate is necessary where I fish, but there are a few situations where I think it could improve the prop's purchase of the water or idling in super shallow water with a hard bottom. A 60 hp is perfect for the boat. Let me know what you think.

  • @briancooper314

    @briancooper314

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jon Miller My thoughts on the jack plate was that it would give me a little more control over the bow when crossing big water that is rough. If you get your trim right and tabs right are you able to run wide open in 2 footers? If so that’s pretty impressive for that boat.

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    SkiffinIt yes the trim tabs really help especially in 2’ seas. I wouldn’t run wide open in 2’ers. I guess it’s possible if the wave length was perfect, but otherwise the boat would get pounded or the bow might drop into a wave.

    I fished Texas for the first time this year, with a guide out of Port Mansfield. I think the Cayenne would be a strong contender because of its pocket tunnel. It could run those shallow bays on plane, just like the guide boat.

  • @JonMillerFishing

    @JonMillerFishing

    4 жыл бұрын

    The Chaquita Freedom is an interesting boat. I have wade fished from the shallow water cats in TX but never been on a flat monohull like the Chaquita Freedom. Would you say this is a hull design intended for 2' or less chop? From a cursory comparison of the Cayenne and the Chaquita, I would say they have some shallow water characteristics that overlap but most of their individual capabilities don't overlap making them very different boats. It seems like the Chaquita will be stronger on super shallow calm waters but not so good in open water, such as crossing the 25 miles of open water across Chandeleur Sound I have been doing in the Cayenne. The Cayenne will be more versatile because it can handle 3' waves but not as good as the Chiquita in super skinny water. As I have found out from owning a variety of boats, deciding exactly where we want to fish and how we want to fish is the starting point of making a good buying decision. Good Luck with that!

    I've wanted a flats for years since first seeing one. I don't fish when it's windy, why do I need a 24' bay boat? I have one other person in the boat. No passengers hardly ever. Most people can't or don't have the heart to fish on a regular basis. Why do we need a huge boat? A small boat means less money we're throwing into the water.
