My First Time in a Skatepark
Спорт
This is my first time ever in a skatepark. Although I did play ice hockey and go skiing all the time when I grew up, there were no skateparks around, so halfpipes and ramps are all new to me.
Since the skatepark is something totally new to me, I will take it slow and easy.
First up is this tiny halfpipe. My only goal is not to fall. It may look really easy, but it's not. I struggle to keep my balance. It's like both my rational brain and my instincts need to figure out what to do. The best I can do is stay low and use my arms for balance.
Thankfully, soon I get used to it, and it actually feels a bit like swinging on a children swing.
Then of course, when I'm more confident and film with the selfie camera, this happens ...
Anyway, no problem. Of course, I wear full knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and helmet.
Onto the real skatepark. Rolling down the ramp is something I feared. But ... no need to worry. Maybe it's my experience skiing or maybe it's easy beacause the ramp is rather small. And any of those bigger ramps I will not try anytime soon.
Turning 180 degrees is not that difficult. These ramps are also much flatter than that tiny halfpipe I tried first. So I feel more in control here.
A minor issue with the plywood surface is that it's quite slippery. It not really a problem, but good to have in mind.
Getting out of here is actually quite an IQ test. My solution is not that elegant, but it works. I guess the skateboarders are like, "what the heck".
Getting more confident, I go a bit faster, roll higher up on quarter pipes, do some small jumps and so on.
It's a lot of fun!
Regarding safety I have three tips:
1. Careful not to crash with other skaters. Before you enter the skatepark, study how they move and make sure you're never in their paths and especially not in their blindspots.
2. Wear full padding. I did fall a few times today but I can skate again tomorrow because I wore protection.
3. Know your limitations. As you can see I did not try anything spectacular. I will take my time to get better at this and then gradualy allow myself to go faster and higher.
All in all, I can say my first attempt at aggressive skating was a great success. Yes, I did not do anything spectacular or impressive, but it was a personal triumph. The skatepark is no longer something mystical or intimidating. It's there for enjoyment. Always. Even in the winter when skating otherwise is off limits.
Thanks to Riga Monterpark for letting me film. Thank you for watching and subscibe for updates.

As an ex 80's/90's skateboarder, I remember the surge of inline skaters at parks and thought "must be so easy because the skates stay attached." Now, I realize that to learn anything in a park, there's no half-assing. It's a FULL commitment; you cannot "jump" out of your skates to get comfortable learning anything in a park. I haven't given transitions much love but I can spend all day in a park w plenty of large banks; it's like skiing!

Chris Rugh That think pattern is what led me into inline skating, but I noticed that if I half-ass that I have to commit to falling (I know it sounds weird) but if I am half-assing I just send it (with alot of hesitation, like dropping in first time and falling backwards because you don’t commit) in that same fasion but instead of falling backwards I always drop onto my knees. Yes, even if I fall backwards I manage to turn around and slide down on all 4’s. Because I know how to fall I didn’t get scared anymore and just sended it.
Never forget the vulnerable and unprotected when on a skate ramp: the teeth and face.

thats why i wear a mouth guard like boxers do
This skate park is so cool, and you did awesome for the first time! Like for real! Wow!
Videos like these give me the energy and motivation to take my skates and practice around the block. They also give me the skill, somehow? If I don't watch a video and I go skating, I have jelly legs. If I watch a video right before, I'm much more confident.
I seldom wear full protection when hitting the streets but the day I enter a skatepark, that's the day I'll heed the words of the responsible inliners and imediately strap on a helmet, knee cushions and elbow pads. The motion physics of the streets are one thing but the unpredictable motion physics of ramps, half-pipes and bowls is another story.
my tips for you are: Be as RELAXED as you can!( thats really really important) 2. Is you can learn going up the half pipe by just practicing 180°s on a ramp and then it will get easier. 3. Dont have your knees always as low, you dont need and also it looks kindof weird 4. Have fun, go more often!
Good advise fell more confident at the skatepark now. Thanks!
Great video! I appreciate your humor, too. =) I went to a skate park for the first time 2 weeks ago, and I can't stop thinking about going back and getting better.
You looked good out there for first timer🤘🤘🤘 you might wanna try a pair on aggressive inlines someday. They function better on ramps and have wider wheels which help you maintain balance a little better
Thanks for this video!! My son is interested in skating, and your video is encouraging. Just staying up is hard - I appreciate your highlighting this, to remind him that it's going to be hard work.
After your first run at this park, I would imagine that the flat road seemed extraordinarily simple.
i loved that inline skater are so humble. very cool
Superb! This was me three days ago. Loved it! I'm getting aggressive skates tomorrow and making it a regular thing. Like you I dropped down some ramps and jumped on and off a box but found rolling back and forth up and down the miniramp very difficult, especially backwards (kept falling). But it's all fun!
This is awesome, I'd love to see you go to the skatepark more. The progression would be awesome. I just started going on my inline hockey skates, and the improvement happens quicker than you think.
Really nice skate park can only wish something like this was close to me
I like at the last part. That 2 guys. Quite funny :)
You should buy cheap aggressive inline skates and make it a little challenge to learn basic tricks in the skatepark

I don’t know if you are still going skateparks but I also recommend buying aggressive skates, there are many 2nd hand good condition skates if you search online, experience is little different
I really want to try going to a skate park with my roller blades but the skatepark near me isn’t very good and I’m to scared to go
I love The Not So elegant way out of the skatepark cuz that would so be me too :)
I want to try!!
I use rollerblades because I don’t have any other kinds of skates yet, I can go up a quarter pipe, but I need better skates without a brake to go down, I go to the skatepark, but I’m usually the only girl, and only rollerblader, which can get really intimidating if you fall. I’ve caught people talking and joking about me, but practice makes perfect.
thanks for this video!
The best place to ride first time is into a 6 feet double side ramp. If the ramp is 4 feet or less you don’t get to pratice going up and down safely because of the edges. Plus the higher it is the more you practice going backward and making 180 degrees turns, plus jumping
actually i been skating on aggresive blades since my 7th year til 12 year,,, now i m 33, bought blades again as nostalgy, funny that after few mins was able to do grinds some basic ones, so now i m thinking to go to skatepark :D also with skateboard, tried one of son after around 20 years and was abble to do ollie and some other tricks immidiately,
👍🏻
Was just like me the other day. I used to rink skate well when i was a kid (15) now im 35 and my kids are skating. I took them to a skate park and it was my first time at one. Started to suss it after the first hour
Awesome
I've been to the Skatepark a few times with roller blades but I have aggressive skates which are made for the skatepark you should get a pair so you can grind on rails and stuff it's really fun

True. Not to mention that the wheels of the aggressive model are molded into a flatter and smaller shape so that there is improved stability.
My local skatepark lol goof job in Latvia Riga I train in there
Super late but I’m going to my first skatepark Wednesday and I’m nervous asf.
What protective gear are you wearing and is it good for outdoors as well?
Slay it dude.
Just like me !!! 😝👍🏼
where do you get your proctection ? send me answer please
how can you balance going backwards on a quarter pipe??? i just fall forward :0
Thank you so much, i really appreciate that.
keep going!
whoa it looks huge
Para ser la primera vez no está mal , poco a poco irás mejorando ... un consejo , compra patines aggresive (usd , razor , xjado) y busca Lino en KZread , da buenos consejos
So it's advisable to bring softer wheels to the park for more grip?

Depends on what you are doing, you can do grinds easier on aggressive skates with hard wheels, but you get less cushion from jumps and less grip for power slides/stops.
i wish we got skate parks like that here in the Philippines lol.. 😅😂

from Calamba, if i attain stable balance,, i`ll go out and skate in highway :D , currently practicing stride + turnaround so that I can stop without putting a break in my skate.. i dunno what they call about that method, but i used same pattern as C-Walk. and its working well.

As a skateboarder I like roller skater than scooter kids lol
High five 🙋
Are you sponsored?
you latvian.?
Blade with other bladers that are skilled. They will teach you and you’ll learn the basics faster.
Dawm you need aggressive blades-.-
Ir was a miniramp Not a halfpipe Love 🤭
You need agressieve skates
stagger you feet! if you put them together you will fall!
Dude there’s no way you’re gonna ride stable with those skates. At least get smaller wheels and faster bearings. And plastic smaller wheels in the middle to not damage your blades on the ledges and rails while being able to ride them
you forgot the most important lesson. Have the right gear for the skatepark. The parks round me wouldnt let you in on the type of skates you use. If you went in with a pair of aggressive skates you would find with the smaller fatter wheels and sturdier frames would slip alot less and feel alot more natural on ramps
ur on the wrong skates pal
Sorry but I don’t get it, are you at a rollerblading park or a skatepark with is for skateboarding. Your not supposed to rollerblade in skateparks because people get annoyed. But I’m just asking, no hate.👍🏾 as you can see at the end there are skaters, and personally I would get annoyed too. So don’t rollerblade at a skatepark. Remember I’m just saying my opinion and what I think, I’m not giving any hate all all.

What in the world are you talking about lol. Skateparks are for skateboards, inlines, scooters, or whatever else you want to ride. Skateboarders who get "annoyed" at other people's wheel preference are just idiotic fanboys. 🙄
