Everyone has answered what made this song-Merry Clayton. I recommend you watch the movie 20 feet from Stardom. It’s about backing singers. It’s a favorite movie of mine and talks about this song.

Merry Clayton got a late call from a Producer one night in 1969 hoping that she would sing on this track. Still in her pyjamas, hair in rollers and four months pregnant, she arrived at the studio, cementing her place in rock history with the “it’s just a shot away” vocal line. She said "I was tired, it was cold and my voice cracked. We listened back and they said: ‘Oh that’s bloody fabulous. Can you do it again?’”

It's new everyday.....for over 50 years.

You’ll never hear another version of this in video,concert,remake,etc that will live up to this.merry Clayton’s emotion and that ‘never to be repeated’iconic break is now etched in your brain and no version will live up to this.

I'm 72 years old, been listening to rock my whole life. This song is the GOAT in my humble opinion.

Merry Clayton was a singer with the Ray Charles singers and the sister of Sam Clayton, the conga player for Little Feat, still with them.

The Stones are one of the greatest rock bands ever!

The main band members are ...Mick Jagger lead vocals , Keith Richards guitar and backing vocals, Bill Wyman bass and Charlie Watts on drums.The lady on backing vocals is Merry Clayton ( Soul And Gospel Singer). You will have to see the band live when you get the chance , Mick Jagger is quite the energetic frontman! Yet another great one from you Mia!👏👏

On point Paul. Only other people on the recording are, Nicky Hopkins played piano, Jimmy Miller played percussion. Have you ever noticed that Mick Jagger and Tina Turner are both high energy and have very similar moves? That's because Tina worked with Jagger on his stage presence and how to dance. Mick was also influenced by James Brown and Mick's mother.

You forgot Brian Jones who was the group's founder, Mick Taylor who replaced him and Ron Wood who in turn replaced him. Jones and Taylor in particular were incredibly important in influencing the band's sound during their respective tenures. Never forget that.

This is a must see.

No one forgets the feelings they feel or the impression this song makes on them the first time they hear it. Ive heard it a thousand times and every time it still conjures up the mood and feelings i felt the first time I heard it. Paint it Black, Mothers Little Helper, Sympathy For the Devil, Bitch, Satisfaction, Midnight Rambler are all Stones classics. Happy Listening! Great Reaction BTW.

This came out in 1969 and at the time, it was written by Mick Jagger (vocals) and Keith Richards (guitar) who wrote the original songs in the Rolling Stones... (the late) Charlie Watts (drums) and Bill Wyman (bass) rounded out the band... Original 2nd guitarist Brian Jones left the band before this record and passed away in 1969 after drowning in his own pool. Mick Taylor (guitar) replaced him until 1974, but he wasn't featured on this track... Keith Richards is credited w/ the guitars on this track. The female vocals were performed by Merry Clayton, an American singer. The Rolling Stones usually perform it live in concert w/ a guest singer.. Ronnie Wood (guitar) has been part of the Rolling Stones since 1975 and is featured on the live versions since.

The Rolling Stones had a ton of hits! This song was very popular especially due to the voice of “Merry Clayton” which added a darker tone but also very powerful tone! Understated. IMO, they are the single greatest rock and rock band of all time. The quality and volume of classics is enormous. This doesn't mean that there aren't other truly great rock bands, LZ, The Who, Pink Floyd, and even Metallica. But The Stones are the standard.

Sir Mick Jagger main frontman, who turned 80 on July 26th same day as Roger Taylor, whose a few years younger, they've been going since the 1960's and still flying around the world and selling out stadiums. Charlie Watts on drums passed away about a year or so ago, Bill Wyman very similar to John Deacon the quiet one of the group, he retired from the group must be twenty years ago maybe longer

My absolutel favorite Rolling Stones' song. They have a ton of other brilliant stuff but this one always gets me.

Merry made this song work, Mick did well for sure with the lead vocals. About my favorite song ever, and I'm 67, and I listened to a lot of super music in my lifetime. Great reaction young Lady!

They are now been going 60 years. They have a spanking brand new album out next week (20th October) called Hackney Diamonds. They have already released two songs off it in a matter of weeks. First one called Angry and Second single Sweet Sounds of Heaven with Lady Gaga backing vocals and Stevie Wonders on Piano. The album has ben given great reviews one critic said best album in 40 years! Mick Jagger (singer) 80 years old, Keith Richards (Bassist) 79 years old, Ronnie Wood (electric guitar) 76 years old. Charlie Watts (Drummer) passed away in 2021 aged 80.

Get a video of them performing this live. It is dramatic and as epic as it sounds. By the time they got to this stage of their careers, they could afford anything to make it visually as dramatic as it sounds on the recording so, I don't think you will be disappointed. After all, they became the top Rock and Roll band in the world, and that's no exaggeration. Have fun.

The best live version of "Gimme Shelter" with footage is on the Stones 1972 concert film, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE ROLLING STONES. It doesn't have the backing vocals, but it does show the Stones at their performing peak. Well work checking out. Any live Stones from the mid 1960's to the early '70's in particular is brilliant.

Founder and multi instrumentalist Brian Jones is not listed as playing on this song. He left the band in June 69 and sadly died later that year. Bill Wyman Bass left 1983 Charlie Watts (drums) passed away 2021 Mick Jagger Vocals & Keith Richard’s Guitar are still touring. Along with Ronnie Wood (guitar) joined in 75 is still with the band. Merry Clayton the backing singer on this track, has a sad story to tell regarding this song.

I missed out guitarist Brian Jones in my earlier comment( original line up). He was present early on in the studio, but didn't actually play on the recording!

In the late 50's/ early 60's, there was a cultural shock that rock n' roll music brought to the shores of the UK and Europe... American music by black artists included the blues, jazz, R&B, gospel and rock n' roll... and the British kids who were raised on their parents' music suddenly got a whole new world of music to listen to... Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ricky Nelson were the white artists that owed their careers and legacies to black artists like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Rock n' roll music was aiming to break down the ethnic barriers between European white and African black people... It was a music form that was literally called a 'threat' by the authorities... The Beatles were banned in the USSR in the 60's. Rock n' roll records were illegal in communist countries and punishable by jail if caught w/ them. But bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks... they all loved American music and wanted to make their own. When The Beatles came to America, they refused to play to segregated audiences - they demanded and supported integration in the civil rights era. The Rolling Stones did the same when they came to America; they had opened for black American artists in the UK whom they idolized. In the UK, the BBC were the broadcasters of media and music, and they would not promote bands like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones... So, pirate radio stations would broadcast from offshore ships and play their record so that the British public could hear the music without censorship or interference. We owe the 60's artists a gratitude of thanks for helping break down the walls between 'white' and 'black' music... It certainly helped to bolster the civil rights movement and gain support for equality of people in the USA.

The greatness of British Rock bands like The Stones.. is that they took the art-form but did not forget its roots... This song has so much soulfulness in its rhythms and tones even down to the way Jagger sang it.. and the fact that they collaborated with African-American vocalist (Merry Clayton) elevated this song to unmatched heights... This is 1969 when (probably) white American artists did not make such choices... Also yes the vocals had to have power but the pain in Clayton's voice is what makes it special..it was NOT about Vietnam for her

This song has it all. And what really made the song even greater live was the addition of Mick Taylor on lead guitar. The Rolling Stones have never sounded as good live after Taylor.

I think you're lucky to have reacted to probably one of the best rock songs ever and the best version. Live versions unfortunately never do justice to this piece of gold in the studio, albeit done at 3 and 4 in the morning if you can believe it.

The actual member who formed the band Brian Jones died at an early age, drowning I believe was his down fall. The drummer Charlie Watts just passed away here about a year ago. The front man Mick Jagger is still Mick Jagger. He's known for his vocals and his showmanship on stage. Keith Richards the lead guitarist looks like he's been drug through a dessert but he's still kicking.(Lots of partying and drugs) In fact they just released a new track recently and all of them are in their 80s. They have a unique genre from Rock and Roll, blues and even a touch of country. Enjoy the fall into their rabbit hole. 🥴🤔✌️💯👍😁🥰

They are great Live! A little fact ...Mick Jagger Sang on " State Of Shock " with Michael Jackson . Freddie Mercury was the original singer to accompany Michael, but it never got finished. There is a demo version of " State Of Shock " on KZread with Freddie and Michael singing.
