John Bettis, was part of a 3 piece jazz group with Karen and Richard, before they became The Carpenters. John also co-wrote this song with Richard, and 37 other of their hits. John was asked, "What did Karen sound like, when you first heard her sing?" His answer, "She sounded just like you hear her now. She was only 16 years old, and she already had the voice, without even working on it. She had that God-given voice, from the beginning."

Their first hits which went to #1 were "We've only just begun" (probably played in more weddings than any song in the 70's) and "Close to You". Karen has a 3 octave contralto voice, and it is simply heavenly, smooth, and unmatched tone quality. Richard, her brother, harmonizes well with her and he composes/produces their songs. He is also an accomplished pianist and Karen is also a fine drummer, which she played drums for in most of the recordings. They had quite a few Top 40 hits during 70's and 80's. She is leading the Angel Choir, no doubt. RIP Karen.

Karen was my first crush as a young kid. I thought she was really amazing. I guess I was just 6 or 7 years old when I heard her singing on the radio. It was the first time that I realized that music could change people's lives. It could help people. It was a lot different from what adults said when they just spoke to each other. Singing was totally different. You could say anything you needed to and everyone would accept it and embrace it. Now, I'm older and I understand that things are a bit more complicated than that. But, I still hold on to the idea that the feeling she gave me really meant something.

Karen Carpenter had perhaps one of the greatest, if not THE greatest female pop vocalist ever. No tricks, no auto-tune and if you go on KZread and listen her sing acapella, you’ll be floored. She was also a TERRIFIC jazz/rock drummer. She died centuries to early. 💔

Karen and Richard left a catalog full of rich and thoughtful music that resonates with the soul. Whether it is about quiet moments in your life, private thoughts, or the haunting memories both good and bad. But it is music you really listen to. And that is something that can't be easily discounted. Enjoy.

Yes! And it's so awesome that they were best friends, too. Olivia was one of her bridesmaids at her wedding (not the maid of honor, word had it that Olivia wanted all the focus on Karen, so she was a regular bridesmaid). And later, sadly, an honorary pallbearer at Karen's funeral. That's how close they were. Olivia would travel to the suburb Downey where Karen had lived since 13 yrs old & hang out at the stores, shop, eat at the local restaurants and what not and everybody would leave them alone because everybody knew Karen. So they didn't deal with any Paparazzi or ppl wanting autographs and such. Some of the locals still have some sweet and funny stories to tell about Karen & Olivia. They both were truly class acts, and so wonderful to their fans. Truly loving, kind, and caring to their fans.

Looking back..I know that Karen and Richard and myself..we’re all about the same age..I would have been 36 when she died at the age of 32..Still miss her smile..her voice was other-worldly..but she was beautiful and funny..and had a mean set of sticks on those drums..her eyes sparkled..and she will forever be missed..disorders were not understood in the 70’s and 80’s..and I believe she needed a support system of friends around her to reinforce the fact that she was truly an angel here on earth..her mom telling her she was chubby from early on..is despicable..you never tell that to someone you love..I would have told her every day..that she was stunning..no pretend smiles..no lies..because she was..this amazing woman weighed 60 pounds when her heart gave out..the weekend she went home to visit..her parents..she should have been loved not just more..but the right way..I am still sorry..for everyone’s loss..she was like Michael Clark Duncan in The Green Mile..one,of,God’s creatures..but as I said..she was an angel here on earth..and I guess she loved all of us..

I pulled this one out earlier this year, maybe because I felt like it was so juxtaposed to what is going on right now. Everything feels so bad and negative in the world - and there was a time when people were optimistic. It made me cry to sing it. My parents were not the coolest when it came to their record collection - and I loved records and singing to them from the time I could put the needle on a record and hit play. So these were the first songs I sang to - and I sang ALL THE TIME. I mean, by the early 80s this music would be considered so uncool - but I love all kinds of music. In fact, even now, I have a few Carpenters albums I bought from the used bin at a local record store - I started to buy every album from my childhood when my husband got me a record player a few years ago. So when no one is home I put them on.. and it's like my guilty pleasure. Thank you for your reaction!!

Yes, as others have mentioned, Karen is an excellent drummer and considered herself a drummer who sang, not the other way around. To see her playing drums I recommend the "live concert" in Australia, 1972 "Bacharach Medley" segment. Or the "Carpenters Budokan, Japan, 1974, concert with the songs "Johnny B. Goode"( Rock & Roll drumming) or "Mr. Guder" (Jazz drumming). Enjoy! And yes, she is fabulous and truly in a league of her own. And thank you soooo much for your reaction to the wonderful Karen Carpenter, brother Richard, and the band. Blessings to you!

💛💛💛💛💛💛 A wonderfully sweet reaction, Mia. Karen melts my heart too all these years later. I was an OG fan from Close To You. Went back for Offering later. A bit of Carpenter trivia, the guy on the drums in WOJB is Cubby O’Brien. He’s visible in a lot of concert and TV show appearances. The trivia, he was an OG Mouseketeer and it was Cubby and Karen on that show as a team. Little did he know how a different and very special Karen was going to come into his life. Hal Blaine did most of the recording drums starting on Close To You. Karen did the Offering/Ticket To Ride album and some songs later on. The powers that be wanted Karen at the front of the stage and Hal was a master drummer. Karen still did drumming on a lot of concert appearances. Many are on KZread and a joy to watch her go. Hal loved Karen’s drumming but he was needed for the studio work. I don’t know your history but if you haven’t reacted to the Bacharach/David Medley at Walter Reed Hospital, it is a joy to see a young Karen giving a masterclass in singing and drumming live.

Karen was and still is the best female singer ever. Never will be equalled. Never will be another like her. Thanks God for Karen Carpenter.

Thats Cubby O'Brien on the drums from the 1950s era Micky Mouse Club. Cubby O'Brien and Richard Carpenter are the only ones still living from that band.

I love how elegant you are and how you wear yourself my dear. More please. And when you get the chance try lot of Fabian and David Phelps even if it is on your own personal time. They're most viewed videos. Until next time stay popping for fresh
