My First Time As Lizz Croft · TOMB RAIDER I Remastered [Part 1]

Ойындар

Welcome to my first EVER playthrough of TOMB RAIDER - the originals.
Tomb Raider was one of, if not THE first game that I've ever seen, watching my father play it on PC when I was little, sitting on his lap together with my brother. I was excited to have a good excuse to finally play these games myself with the release of the Remaster!
In 2022 I played the three newest Tomb Raider games, but I always preferred the iconic look of the OGs - the red glasses, two pistols and the long braid.
Join me on my adventure through ancient ruins for the hunt of old artifacts and lot's of action!
TOMB RAIDER I-III Remaster

Globe-trotting Adventure: Follow Lara Croft around the world and face off against deadly foes and dangerous myths.
Lovingly Restored: Experience the classics boasting upgraded graphics, with the option to switch to the original polygon look at any time."

So true. This was on the cusp of 3D worlds in gaming. We were entering a new world. In general the technological jumps and acceleration in graphical power was incredible from about '95 to 2010. Since then it's mostly been improvements in detail, textures and lighting. And now ray tracing. But the core look of games isn't far off from a game like The Last of Us which is over 10 years old now. Point I'm making is that it was a peak time to be a gamer. The medium was literally developing in front of us every year or two.

I was born in 1970. I lived through the revolution from 2d to 3d animation and the rise of www. In 1996, when I was 26 years old I gave my daughter the first tomb raider game on ps1. It was magical. I fell in love with this form of (adventious gaming) entertainment, 😂😊 Wow this is nostalgic for me and so much fun to se the new generations play what was considered a huge breakthrough in technology. 🎉

Very nostalgic indeed shows how much has changed in terms of technology. My favourite is TR2 spent many nights playing trying to get to next level on my bit CRT Alba TV 😎

The thing about the classic Tomb Raider games is that all of the levels were built on a 3D grid system.Every element of the game fits into one of the (invisible) cubes in the grid, and the controls were designed to let you effectively navigate those levels. It wasn't so much a platform game as a giant 3D puzzle. Walking up to the edge and then jumping back, would move you back exactly one square, which is exactly how much room you need for a running jump. Then, you didn't have to worry about timing your jump to be right on the edge, you just started running forward and immediately pressed the jump button. Lara would jump right at the edge, because it always took her exactly one square of running before she could jump. Each jump would always cover a fixed distance as well, so you always knew how far you could jump. Often, a ledge would be too high to just jump off without taking damage, but if you hung from the edge and then dropped down, you'd do it safely, or at least take less damage. This was done by facing away from the ledge, jumping back and holding the action button, so she grabbed the edge, then you could drop from there. I think someone said they added a new control to do that for the modern controls.

@@sascara9981 Thank you. At one time, I used to know all the tricks, like exactly how far up a standing forward jump would take you, how to drop backwards off one platform and land on the one directly below you, how to intentionally cancel a grab in mid-air so you land on a lower platform, etc. I never was very good at doing the corner bug though, unless I was standing on a ledge so there was nowhere for her to go.

Things changed in TR3 with the updated engine which had half squares (triangles) and the ability to change the degrees of the floor. They even had instances where you had to jump diagonaly and mid air change lara's direction in order to grab a ledge. That was done in TR2 but way less frequent. TR3 had some really unpredictable grid scenarios. Thats why i love it more now that i came back to it again through Remastered series. (And yet i play old graphics as i appreciate the lighting and shadows more).

I'd seriously recommend learning tank controls for this game. Being able to backflip onto ledges can be a real time (and indeed, life) saver. I grew up with the original at 14 and tank controls were all we knew of TR. I've actually not found it too difficult switching back and forth, but the classic games rely more on your precision rather than any assistance. Just a suggestion.

I die a little inside seeing people choose “modern” controls. They’re not really modern when they don’t function as they would in a modern designed game. It would be like adding tank controls to Uncharted. It just doesn’t make sense to do that.

  • @phyein4815

This, this, this. The classic controls are seriously one of the most underrated aspects of these games. Once you get a feel for the classic controls and how Lara interacts with the world you wouldn't want them any other way. They are made to be extremely precise and the gameplay seems very much molded around how she moves. The "Tank" control name almost feels like slander at this point, no idea why they would literally call them that in the menu rather than just "classic".

@@DocDarkness I'd be curious to see how people get secrets like the magnum room in Colosseum that's a door requiring side and backflips to reach it in time. Having said that you could try with guns drawn, but it seems a little stupid only being able to do flips in that way.

  • @Nightopian1982

@@phyein4815 It is so damned hard trying a lot of these precise leaps and grabs with modern controls. The timing is far more difficult than it should be, and I would seriously lose my mind trying to control her like that throughout the game, and likely getting killed every five or ten minutes. I can manage modern controls in the new games, and it's easy enough going back to these ones, but it's about suitability. Honestly, half an hour like that was more than enough for me. The only slight way I can see around it is by developing patches or something, but I honestly can't see how it'll work in practice unless the level design is changed. It wouldn't work with ANY of the five original games from what I can tell, they all utilise the same design and physics.

50:14 And this area is where tank controls are king :) The beauty with the tank controls is that not only is it perfect for super precise platforming, but it also eliminates the need to ever worry about the camera while moving. You only need to use the look button to see what is in front of you, and then after that you can do the whole thing blind if you wanted to because it's so predicable. This was really key back then when you didn't have analog sticks to move and control the camera at the same time, its a really smart system. I see you got lots more played already so look forward to see how you tackle later areas, and if you try out the tank controls at some point. :) Really enjoyable playthrough so far! :)

A good relaxing tip: Common natural instinct usually when we play shooter games is that we tend to tap the shoot button repeatedly. There's no need to tap all the time, Lara still keeps shooting as long as you press and hold the shoot button❤. Saves you from making your fingers sore. Holding the shoot button also helps in locking your auto-aim in one target only, if you want to kill the enemies one by one.

The thing about the modern controls is that it doesn't allow Lara to do her fancy looping jumps when you would jump sideways or backwards, instead she just jumps forward in that direction. Now that is not a big deal anyway, but when it comes to do a running jump, it kinda gets tricky, because the modern controls also prevent her from stepping backwards to have the perfect distance for a running jump. But you seem to get along just fine so far. Very interesting to see people trying through this game for the first time and you're funny too😊

Modern controls makes it difficult to perform a running jump between ledges. Lara requires a square's worth of running start, and that is easily gauges by performing a backward hop, but modern controls don't have the backward hop because you always move in that direction.

Hello! New here! Here are some tips about the modern controls: If you run towards an edge, but you want to grab it, not falling , keep action pressed. (left click on PC) She will grab the ledges and not fall. The walk button will stop her at the edge, but this way she won t grab it. This tip is for dropping from huge heights in order to not take damage. Just simply falling forword will cost you more health. 2. If you want to just jump from the position you are, stay still, press jump first, then the direction you want to jump ( mostly forword for the modern controls) If you want to perform a RUNNING JUMP (for bigger gaps), you have to run TWO step before she will perform a jump, otherwise it's not a running jump. That s why she, sometimes, keeps falling and you believe she does not respond to the jump button. Just because she doesn't have enough space to performe those two jumps. If you don't actually have the space to perform the two steps running, you could do the following trick to perform it in a smaller space. Here it is what you have to do: 1. Walk forword keeping the walk button pressed for one step or so 2. release it and press jum immediately. This way she will perform a running jump without those two steps that require one grid of running. I saw that sometimes you're exactly near the edge of a ledge wanting to perform a jump from that position, but Lara falls. That's because you press forword first then jump. Just switch the order and she won't fall. Sometimes I press the look button to go inside and then outaide the look mode to reset the camera angle when camera gets crazy. To understant the momentum of her running jump, just perform a run with multiple jumps to see how she won't actually perform jump after jump. She will need to run two steps between the continuous jumps. Not like these days games when the character jumps instantly when you press the button even thought the character has a weird poaition of the feet. Sorry for the weird way of talking, I'm not a native speaker 🤣. Keep it up! You're awesome!

@@Jay_Sullivanthe camera has a few issues in the tank controls, but the controls were designed so that it doesn’t matter as much. (As long as you use the d-pad as it was also designed for, the analog sticks weren’t a thing yet for PS). Each movement input has a set result. There’s no variation as long as you do the proper setup. Which while using the look button, d-pad and tank controls works really really well. Can’t see in front of you? Who cares you just push forward and input whatever jump is necessary for the gap and grab where necessary. Pushing up won’t make you fall off when the camera moves because the controls are locked to how Lara is facing. That’s why it works. Tank controls take some getting used to, especially if you’ve never played anything like it before, but they are imo the only way to play these games. They’re not bad either. People just give up too quickly. Lara sets up all her jumps in tank controls. Tap back and you are now the perfect distance for a running jump for example.

I have to say, one of the best young player blind playhtrough so far. Heartwarming to see that the gamer instincts are not dead :P You keep saying that you suck but it's not true at all. Games of these generation were not meant to be played perfectly on your first run, you're doing pretty well. 17 minutes on Caves is a solid time for a first run. I've genuinly saw cringe-worthy playthroughs that took 40 minutes of stumbling and asking "What do I do now" before they figured out how to start the tutorial. Keep it up! PS, I suppose you've figured it out by now, six videos in the playthrough and having passed some levels that require tricky jumping. Anyway, a bit of backseat driving in case you're still confused: The key to understand jumps is to learn to see the block grid the levels are built on. You may start to see that everything is one block wide, and some fractions of a block tall. Jump button = Jump in place. You can grab a ledge one block above Lara. Jump button + forward = standing jump forward. You can jump over a one block wide pit, or grab a ledge that's two blocks away. You MUST be on the very edge of the platform to cover the span to grab the ledge. Also, jump button first is fundamental. Forward + Jump = running jump. This may be tricky for modern gaming habits, but in fact it's very precise and very reliable. When you press this combo, Lara steps forward one block then jumps. ALWAYS. You can't move, say, half block and then jump as soon as you push the button. It covers either two blocks wide pits, or grab a ledge that's three blocks away. All the times you failed to jump was because you pushed forward first then jump, without having the required distance for her to do her thing. Note that a one block long run-up is all you need for a running jump, no need to run for longer than that. I understand that you feel more comfortable with modern controls, but the classic tank controls end up being better for three reasons: - Modern controls are not modern at all. It's actually a modern control scheme bolted on top of the classic one, which makes it awkward at times as you can see. - The camera freaks up much less in classic mode because it's programmed to stay behind Lara as much as possible. - Movement is more precise because it depends on Lara's orientation rather than the camera. As hard as it may be to get accustomed to it for someone who did not grow up with it, it means that even if the camera freaks out, if you aligned correctly when you start a movement or a tricky jump, the alignment is maintained and your movements end up doing what you wanted to do without the need for correction whatever the camera does.

51:20 If you’re doing a running jump, there’s a minimum distance you have to run before she will jump (so always start next to the wall on these one block platforms, rather than near the edge - tank controls make this much easier and more consistent to do) All inputs are buffered btw, so you don’t have to get the timing down, even if you want to re-jump after landing (for example). Just hold jump, and she’ll jump as early as she possibly can 🙂 And yes, it’s normal to struggle with this stuff. A significant portion of the gameplay is designed around this precision platforming, and finding your way up/across to different areas. We all fall to our deaths sometimes, even long after mastering the controls 😅 The jumps were originally designed with tank controls in mind though (considering how the blocks are all lined up on a grid), so it’ll be interesting to see how the modern controls work out for you, if you end up sticking with them (I tried them briefly myself, but they couldn’t seem to do everything I wanted to do, so I’m sticking with the classic controls for now)

I'm finding the game almost unplayable with modern controls. Thankfully i'm used to tank controls, so it isn't a problem, but i'm wondering how new players will handle it. The game is entirely designed around the grid structure for jumps, windups, and very deliberate movement, but modern controls make it actually harder to position yourself precisely because unlike tank controls, they are more free form and don't conform as tightly to the grid. Not to mention actions like the 180° roll are completely pointless, since you can just press down and turn the opposite direction. Though a problem many new players have with tank controls, is not knowing that they were designed before the mass introduction of the analog stick, and so are meant to be used with the d-pad or a similarly precise digital input (like a keyboard).

Yeah true, I see they actually work pretty well after watching you do it. I was a bit dubious about them at the start of watching the series as I read the reviews on the remaster and they were saying they don't work properly. Clearly an inaccurate review@@LIZZgame

After doing the timed obstacle course outside, I always locked Jeeves the butler in the cold room after. 😁😁No idea what they changed in the remastered versions though. She won't jump sometimes is because Lara's overstepping at the last so there's nothing she could push off against. Just have to figure out the distance between her feet when she runs and walks. Reminds me of an incident, this was more than 20 years ago, when a friend of mine was frustrated because she couldn't get a character to jump over and get to another platform. Tried for an hour she said. I popped over to her house, checked the distance between the character's feet when he ran and then leaped him over. Took me a few seconds from the moment I sat down. She couldn't believe it. 🤣

Ms. Croft, it is very much normal to suck at some games just like having our own failures in life. But embracing and learning from them is always key to future success. I also suck at this game the first time I played it in 2017, but they have become a lot easier to master by practicing the mechanics, and Lara's tutorial in the gym was the real saving grace for the whole situation. It was a lot simpler than I initially thought it would be. And then I played Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame after all the classic Tomb Raider games and suck again at the mechanics. I have to learn it's own mechanics from the beginning as well😅

I am an old school TR player. Grew up playing every single one. You should learn the tank controls. Not only will the game become easier but you will also have much more control over every jump and movement.

Certain sections later on in the game are way more difficult with the modern controls than with the tank controls. But i can see why you would choose the modern controls though. 🙂

I see there's several more episodes after this, so you've probably figured it out already, but the key to not getting hit in combat is usually jumping backwards while shooting.

with modern controls it's easier to jump over them or running in circles around the enemies.

U gotta learn the tank controls. They are so much better to use for this game once you get use to them.

I finished two of the three games now with the Modern Controls without any problems (apart from initially learning how the game works), I think I am fine. Will start TR3 on Friday.

50:32 Running jump takes time to practice in either control schemes, and it's fine to die a lot in this game😅. The game has been using the grid-based system during its time so it behaves differently. To perform a running jump successfully, you do this manuever you successfully did 50:32 . Always imagine that Lara needs a full square block to make the running jump properly. After you walk to the very edge of any side of the square block and Lara stops moving, start running from this edge towards the very opposite side of it and then jump. This will give you the longest leap successfully. When you hear and see Lara running 2 footsteps, she is ready to jump by then. You are probably struggling with the running jump because Lara can't jump right away if you start running from the middle portion of the square block, and this is why she keeps falling. Always start running from the edge of the square and hear 2 footsteps before jumping. She told you in the gym beforehand to "walk towards the edge of the white line until I won't go any further, then tap backwards". When you press one tap backwards, Lara makes 1 hop backwards and that hop basically let's you reach the edge of the square right away. This is a safe and a very accurate tactic if you are afraid you can’t make the jump. It also prepares her to have one successful long running jump without falling anymore when you are attempting to grab the farthest ledge that you can reach. Standing jump forward is also very important, especially when the next safe block is too near for you to running jump and grab. Use this only when Lara cannot grab the close ledge and collides with it instead.

If you're interested there is a actual remake of the first Tomb Raider. Its called Tomb Raider: Anniversary. It has modern controls and for the day graphics. The game was reworked to have actual environmental puzzles aswell. Think Resident Evil 2 Remake in terns of execution.
