My First Seiko: Prospex SPB143 (Unboxing & Review)
Ойын-сауық
A Discussion and Review of my first Seiko. The Prospex SBDC101 / SPB143 Diver. A recent release of a model that pays tribute to both the modern recreation SLA017 and the vintage 62MAS. The first week on the wrist experience has been beyond expectations, where fit and finish is excellent and all the parts feel like more consideration went into them. These models deserve a lot more attention in the watch community.

@@jessedominguez543 Thank you Jesse! I'd love to experience an SLA maybe to cap off this category one day and have it next to the Seamaster 57 as the OG reissue divers in the 50's & 60's category. So interesting when you start looking deeper into brands and what they offer... this is definitely the time for it too. Thanks again!

@@ID-Guy thanks for the reply brother! Seiko is on the right path, they just really need to watch their QC issues. Hope to have you on the podcast at some point, would love to chat with you 👍🏼!
I love the way this guy presents. It’s so refreshing to have a different accent reviewing watches. The precise rhythmic and almost ‘robotic’ (in the kindest sense) is a pleasure to listen to.
Ever since I learned it had an ovary I’ve been treating my SPB143 just a little bit more carefully. Thanks for the great review.

I've been looking forward to your review and it didn't disappoint. I've been into Seiko's for sometime and their vintage chronos have been so appealing and collectable it always seems that the brand has such heritage and diversity. I got my SPB143J1 last year to match up with a Tudor BB58 and this more than holds it own. Keep up the follow up reviews and congratulations on a great addition to your collection.

It's superb Pierre... They really have hit the ball out of the park with virtually everything! Thank you for the comment, sir!
You red my mind, this is also my first seiko. What a stunning watch, love it.
Finally got to see this piece in person. It made me do a double-take, because I thought it was the full on 62mas reissue. It was situated right next to the Tudor display and I could see instantly why it is so often compared to the BB58. It presents about the same size and the finishing, quite frankly, looked better than what I'd expected from Seiko at the price. Obviously I'm considering purchasing it, but I'm torn between it and the SPB153. I agree that the Prospex logo suits it. In several decades, enthusiasts will be scrambling to get vintage Seikos with the logo, because it looks cool and vintage. Like Comex.

I think you will love this brand after you’ve worn it for awhile. I’ve worn Seiko for a long time- 1968 to now. There have been other brands thru the years but I always came back. I really like the Prospex that you got...

What a great review. I’ve had a few Seikos in my life, a great brand, THE watch brand in my opinion. I bought an SPB053 for my 30th Wedding Anniversary and I’m so chuffed with it, but wow, I’m really loving the 143, it just seems perfect, but I fear it might be lost on my larger than average wrist. Mine has very similar design cues and has a gorgeous blue dial and bezel, but I’m sure the yearning for the 143 will not go away, I might just HAVE to get one.
Channeling Pete Townshend at the end! Very nice rendition of Behind Blue Eyes. Congratulations on the Seiko. Such a lovely watch. I had the same connect with the SPB153. Looking forward to more on this one. Excellent work, as always.

l love your outro with the guitar songs:) I got me the SPB147 as first SEIKO in my collection, so I can totally relate to your thoughts! Great video!
I have the SPB149. It's simply divine, and not uncommon for many of Seiko's better models. Seiko is a brand finally on the move upmarket, and deservedly so. Still a great value, even at current prices.
Great choice! That antracite is ⭐️ of the show! And lume will not disappoint either!
Great pick up IDGuy! I would say of the roughly 6 trillion Seiko models available, this is exactly the one to get. I just picked this up recently myself (although me buying a watch is a low bar) I agree, the gray dial absolutely sells it, and the date window execution is fantastic. I love this watch

@@ID-Guy u should check out averagebros somewhat recent video (been couple month actually) on this very watch and the new "mm200" sbdc127. Regarding the clasp, he was also going to swap out the clasp for a marine master one. But, decided not to. The stock one is actually thinner and flows with the bracelet better as the mm one can be chunky and leave clasp gap where links meet at either end. Idk, something to think about. Although the adjustment mechanism is cool. I think a little overkill for what may likely end up being only 1 or 2 position change at most. And, I have coped with many standard clasps by finding a good comfort zone where no adjustment is ever needed. I never take out tool to micro-adjust once I've set.

Thanks man great review. I’ll look at one I’m just paranoid about qc with seiko. Looks great on your wrist, wear it in good health. Great tune while I write this too, very nice playing
I have always been a luxury and high horology collector but last year I got into collecting seiko watches and in particular their prospex dive range. Once you get on you want another one. Very reliable, great finish and comfortable on the wrist. Fabulous watches, but they creep up in price. But still very good value. I have been looking into a more dresser watch from the brand, SBP069 or the Japanese market version the SARX053. The dial is one of the best dials I have ever seen including high horology. An enamel dial made by one artisan man in Japan that makes every single watch dial in that range. Check it out and have a look if you havent. Its stunning.. congratulations on your new seiko.

One month ago I bought the SBDC029 SEIKO Shogun Titanium 900 $. This is my first automatic watch and I have been wearing it every day. I love this piece of art
Mystery tune sounds of "Behind Blue Eyes" in parts. A "golden age of Suwa" reference I'd recommend a look at is the 6105-800X (0 or 9 depending on intended sales market), pre-Willard case forms. The bridge between a Bathyscaphe inspired 62 MAS and Seiko's classic c-cases from Willard to 6309 Turtle and the SKX.

Hey, congratulations on the Seiko! Beware, once you start, it can be a slippery slope - I'm 10 in now! These are such great all round sports/divers. A pleasing, balanced design, well executed. It avoids being a generic skin diver homage, but instead finds a modern relevance that few others have managed. To that you add major advances in material finish and bracelet design. I'd prefer to loose the PS/X, but I don't mind it on these and the grey sunray face is a beauty. A great companion to your peerless Seamaster Trilogy!

What a brilliant analogy James. Wow. I may have to quote you in Part 2 summing up this watch ;) It does feel so modern in this category (but calls back to the classics at the same time) pretty fascinating! Sadly, the bug has already bitten hard... a Marinemaster clasp is on the way... and what a terrific daily it's become in my rotation too. I'd happily wear the Seiko all week and Seamaster on the weekends (which is what's happening now) Thank you for the comment, brother!
This was my first Seiko as well. Originally intended on getting something as a daily driver, for weekends when I'm home, etc., etc. just to keep wear and tear off of some of my more expensive pieces. I looked at monsters, and a couple of other models, but once I saw this one, I jumped on it.... Only problem is it's so nice that it went into the rotation with my nicer watches and I still need to find one that daily driver that I wouldn't mind dinging up.
That’s a lovely looking watch!
My favourite seiko too and in my collection! Great guitar action
Great video! Congratulations on your purchase! From Brazil 🇧🇷
IDGUY, love the guitar at the end....Thank you for doing another one. More please. Oh....Behind Blue Eyes, The Who. It's kinda a My Generation song... As far the Seiko. I'm a bit surprised and I'm also not surprised. The thought process around the Omega 1957 was amazing and the choice was so perfect for you. I loved watching the videos documenting the story around that watch. I understood your thinking around the Oris 65, a bit playful, a bit vintage, etc. The Smiths. The genesis of your watch journey. I get that. I was bit surprised by your Rolex Explorer conclusions. So far, there has been a very coherent feel to your journey. With the Seiko, it almost feels more like "ticking off a box". Don't get me wrong. It is a solid watch. You discuss the design elements, as always, very well. It will be interesting to see if this is a keeper or becomes expendable fairly soon. I was thinking your next purchase might be for something like the Longines heritage sector dial. Something that has a very different look than another black dial watch. Something you would wear on different occasions. Love your videos. Especially the ones documenting your horological journey.

Karl, honestly, I said "this will be a watch to test and experience - if I don't like it, at least it was worth the try" but it's been on my wrist for over two weeks and it NEVER gets boring. After experiencing the black bay, this has had twice as much wrist time over the same period. Crazy! Over the next month I'll put something together that's more coherent, but the styling of the watch feels so correct (and is not "playful" in the slightest) I mean, the Submariner looks like a fun watch next to this with all of its shapes and Bauhausness... Don't worry though, there are plenty more watches out there to come. Seriously eyeing a Zenith... not even kidding ;) Thank you as always for these, sir. @@ID-Guy Box clever my friend. Abort the idea of a SLA017 considering what you have here and in your collection. Go for the Grand Seiko and if you can aim for a Spring Drive, that is the way to go. I have many Seiko models as you know including 4 Alpinists 2 being the Prospex versions. Savor yourself for the GS. You will not regret it. The Prospex SPB143 you have will serve you the same as my SPB151 a great all purpose rounder semi-beater. The GS will take you up a notch or two, consider your overall collection which I am very familiar with and the GS will fit nicely into it. I am looking after you Bro!
After buying the larger SKX009, I discovered its case diameter was too big for me. I ended up getting the SKX013 which definitely fits better on my wrist, but you’re right, proportionately something irks me - the case is too thick (which is emphasized by its bezel/crystal flatness) and bezel diameter too narrow for the case size. I still own and wear it sometimes, but now that I have a BB58 I find myself wearing it less and less.
In therms of case dimensions and dial design, this is one the best Seiko divers of all time. If a Seiko could put a better movement close to chronometer specs this would be one of the best divers on the market. Cheers!
Good purchase, ID!
You nailed the Seiko dilemma exactly. Over stylized, gigantic case diameters, weird case shape or handset. It’s always something that keeps one from pulling the trigger. I would add the numerous & confusing array of models and constant churning of the designs. Coming mainly from Rolex I like the constant consistent nature and incremental evolution of Rolex models. You can buy a 50 yro Submariner and it’s little changed from a 2021. I suspect in another 50 yrs the Sub will still be around and only slightly changed from the current Subs available today. Seiko’s seem to be ever evolving and not establishing a model heritage or pedigree. That said I think Seiko going back and making a connection with their original 60’s, 70’s models is an anticipated welcome change. As evidenced by these reissue models popularity. That’s a beautiful Divers watch you got there. I have a Marine Master 300 and love it except for it’s 44mm x 15mm bulk. It looks like what you’d expect a vintage Seiko to look like and you can’t argue against it’s superb fit and finish nor it’s value proposition.

Brilliantly said Evan! Wow. This will probably be the basis for Part 2 on this new generation of divers (maybe I'll be able to snag a Willard SPB151 before then and have them together for a comparison) - Both just feel correct with the amount of refinement but also restraint around their designs. It's so interesting! Just like the Sub (which has never really deviated with it's styling) - I'd highly recommend an SLA or one of these SPB's if we're talking about sizes. The 40.5mm case (and about 13mm height) feels like a "true 40" on the wrist. Also have a Marinemaster clasp enroute for mine so that should be an interesting combo ;) But thank you for this! I'm really looking forward to preparing part 2 now...
Great video - I’m a big fan of your design-first perspective on watches. Specific to your view of Seiko, I wonder if you’re more unbiased / positive to the brand because you’re “newer” to it, and don’t carry the memory of it being a more value-centric brand before their recent move up market / price scale that seems to be the major theme of Seiko watch reviews in recent years. Either way I tend to agree with you, and this watch is majestic

Very interesting comment on this! Sadly, I'm so fresh to the brand... never grew up with Seiko 5's etc like so many others. But I remember back a few years when you could grab SKX's for a steal (before KZread really pushed them) - It has been a recent topic of debate around this "prospex" shift with so many of their models like the Alpinist controversy. I guess it's the way with any manufacturer out there... the more people want your product, the more you can up your price (and hopefully not sacrifice quality) - I still reckon they have a sweet spot with watches in this category (and aren't charging 4x more than they should like so many others) well worth discussing in the future!

There's no denying how excellent the BB58's are. After experiencing the blue for over a month (also a big lover of blue) this watch has been on my wrist for twice as long already. I'd suggest trying to find this exact Seiko on the grey market and compare them both in hand. Honestly think you'll be amazed at how they contrast each other in a collection. Plus there will always be demand for either if you ever decide to sell one ;)
Hey great video man, keep it up!! Just a quick question though, which strap did you have your Oris 65 on? Looks killer and wouldn't mind picking up a similar one myself. Cheers!
About to pull the trigger on a 63MAS version, still split between this, the chocolate dial and the new 140th anniversary version. No matter what I'll end up getting a replacement bracelet from strap code as these aren't great for the money. 70hr power reserve, decent movement and fully waterproof, does it for me.
Prospex logo on the crown would look great!!!!!
This is my favorite Seiko. I’d rather buy this and a four seasons Grand Seiko than a Sub, and it would be less money.
I am guessing the last rift is Behind Blue Eyes by The Who Great video sir👏👍👍 Love fact that there is no cyclops on the Seiko’s crystal

You got it, Reed on both accounts! Isn't it refreshing to not see a cyclops on a crystal? ;)
IDGuy you are very well spoken. It is a luxury to be understood.
yeah I want this seiko as well, accuracy of thatr movement is really not very good but the design is amazing
Wrist check: 214270 Mach 1 (; Looking through the archives for any video of DT's full owned collection? So $1500. dive watch ..nice piece for a seiko and more important, the review, impeccable; and thoroughly much appreciated, thanks.
Amazing!
