This mix dates back to 1991. No automation, barely a compressor... just an eager green mixing engineer stressed out and wondering if people would laugh at his mix (please don't laugh at my mix)

Loved it !!! I liked you telling us what you would have done different. I think it's great to go back and see where you've (we've) been. I love doing that in my own life.....and I enjoyed it with you also.

Hi there, Kevin. This was amazing! I really loved it and would LOVE to see more like this one because your perception on how you worked back then and why certain mixing decisions were taken is in itself educational. I think you did a really good job mixing the song and I was also very glad to hear you say that your favorite kind of music is Gospel music. I discovered your channel a few months ago and I love the content you're providing and I am learning a lot, so I was really glad to hear that someone I appreciate and I am learning from loves Gospel music! That really made my day. Thanks for making this video. Many blessings!

Awesome man.. thank you for the kind words. Did you ever sing or play in a Gospel group?

@@MixCoach , as a matter of fact I did almost two decades ago. I was a lead vocalist and I'd also play the keyboard every now and then. I'm Romanian and I live in Timisoara, Romania, and I used to attend this church where I was a member of the worship team and we would play and sing Gospel music, too, genre wise. I have been a part of a much smaller church now for years and I still play and sing but it's not at the same level as the other group but Gospel music is and will always be a big part of me.

Dig. Great video Kevin. Love the story about your mom. So hard to know when a mix is finished. Someone told me once that it’s basically just a game of trying to figure out when to abandon the mix. Otherwise you could just tweak it forever. This group is seriously talented as well man. Wow.

Nice walk down memory lane on a great song Kevin! Thanks for sharing. Given the technology back in the day, there was a lot being done with little compared to what we have at our disposal today.

Hearing what you have done and why and what you have learned during your journey is super interesting and helpful, especially reflections on what you may do different now based on your experience.

Awesome video Kevin! I love videos that take us all down memory lane. I've heard this song in countless memorial services and it's awesome to find out that you mixed it! I would love to see more videos like this! Coming from a guy who has only recorded/mixed "in the box", I'd love to hear about more of the analog days. For example, I'd love to learn about how an analog metrenome fit into the workflow. I'm sure it would be captured with the original take but how did you do tempo automation? Just an idea for a future video🙂

Hey Richard. We never did tempo automation...lol.. we barely did vocal automation... Typically, in the analog days, we would print the metronome or click (usually from an akai mpc) and that would be it. Usually the drummer would kill the click after the last downbeat so that it wouldn't bleed into the acoustic guitar or piano mics.. I wouldn't listen to the click in the control room so I could tell if it was going to be a problem early on.

Thanks for sharing this mix and your thoughts about it. Besides how you feel about it now, I was wondering what music you were listening to at the time and how that style of mixing was influencing your choices.

Have you since discovered the best processing for a dx7 electric piano sound? (The mute button). 😉 Just kidding, very much of its time. (With the photo to prove it) In all seriousness, thanks for putting yourself out there like this, it’s cool to see progression as well as to think about how you’d do it differently now. Also cool lessons in how the stacking changes the spatial information.

Hey Mark! Thanks for the comment! Man, are used to love that sound run through some chorus and a little verb…
