Would you recommend becoming an emergency call handler, whether its for police, fire or ambulance? My ultimate goal is to end up as a police officer or paramedic but I think that having experiance as a call handler would be pretty good to understand incidents from another perspective, as well as give more insight into the service and what it deals with. By the way, the videos so far have been great. Ignore that haters :)

Thank you mate! Yes definitely suggest doing the roll as a call handler first for sure. You learn so much and it gives you a fantastic grounding. I was a special constable for near enough 2 years before I did the call handling role and I didn’t get a huge amount of training, also you can only learn so much in a few weeks. In call handling training you learn so much more detail and you have more down time / time to ask for advice and help once you’ve started the role. When you’re there on scene it’s not as easy to ask for help or advice. Information and knowledge is king! It will boost your confidence, heck I used to have officers phoning asking for advice on how they should deal with a crime or what they needed to do at times. are you looking at police or ambo more?

​@@Emiilylawrence Id love to be in any of the services but right now I am leaning more towards ambo since I am currently studying health and social care at college. ​ I wouldnt do call handling for more than a few years tbh, I would just want to get myself the confidence and the experience I wont have straight after college before moving into a role like an ECA and then eventually a paramedic.

Hey so the hours changed a lot. When I first joined I worked 5 days on 2 days off. The hours were the same each week for the whole week, so a week would be 0600-1400 as an early, a late would be 1400-2200 and a night was 2200-0600. I much preferred these hours! The hours did however change, and I was then on a 6 day week with 4 days off, which sounds much better but it was harder. I’d work the first 2 days an early which changed to a 0700-1700, the late shift was changed to 1400-0000 and a night was 2300-0700. I found that hard as I would work until 0700 into my first rest day and then of course on the last rest day I’d be in bed early to get up early, so it took a toll on my body!

how did you get the job? how was the interview stage and how was the training? :)

I just applied like anybody else :) the interview was face to face (nowadays I’m not so sure if it’s over zoom or what) and I had a person from HR and a manager from the call centre. They basically asked me scenario based questions, what would you do if someone was giving you a hard time, being a abusive, or give us an example of how you’ve dealt with a highly emotional situation. I’m not sure how much it’s changed now, but if you want any further advice let me know! Training was intense, it’s where a lot of people dropped out, however as long as you’re sensible and logical, you will be fine :) the real training and learning starts in the room!
