80k as a PA ...yikes not worth it. PAs do so much for the health community esp in urban health. I’m glad she’s getting more now. My sis is PA and she wouldn’t take lower than 94k as a new grad, then she got an offer for 115k in an er!

Infectious disease can be extremely challenging for a physician and it is easily one of the hardest fields to compete for a residency spot. I am surprised your role as a PA was so different in comparison.

As a college student, just entering into my last year of undergraduate studies. I will say, this was very inspirational to me. Kuddos to you for discussing salary. Not that it's all about money, that is something to keep in the back of my mind when i feel like giving up lol. Not too many degree/careers paths offer salaries of 80k-100k entry level!!!

This was very helpful for me. I'm an elementary teacher now and I'm just not enjoying it. I wanted to get my masters (we're required to get our masters in the state I work at) and instead of just getting it in education and making 50k instead of 40k I was wanting to get in this profession. The role of a "Hospitalist" is relatively new and constantly evolving. It started out as a physician-dominant field, but has grown much into a more PA and NP oriented area of practice with physicians still covering most of the positions. A Hospitalist is Physician/PA/NP who has been hired by a hospital or sub-contractor health group to staff their hospital(s). The idea of a Hospitalist was brought up and implemented in order to provide a kind of "continuity of care" that is ideal and very similar to a Primary Care Physician outside of the hospital. They are meant to be the patients' primary source of information, while ordering consults from specialists and tests as they see fit for the patient, but still maintaining primary responsibility over that patient. The fact that Kendra was hired on as an Infectious Disease PA makes me wonder if the "Hospitalist" term was being used moreso as an adjetive, since Infectious Disease is a whole other medical sub-specialty, entirely. Most Hospitalists are General Practitioners (Family medicine) or Internal Medicine physicians, whereas infectious disease is a specialists who is called on to consult on specific cases throughout a larger area, often times traveling between hospitals and different levels of medical systems (eg, Assisted-Living, Nursing Home, etc.). Furthermore, whether you work at one hospital or multiple hospitals has to do with many factors, ranging from the size of the hospital(s), who you're employed by (hospital vs. contract group vs. self-employed, etc.), where you're located, how many other hospitalists are employed, etc. Many of our hospitalists work in the same hospital day-in and day-out. I will say, the role of a hospitalist is changing dramatically and for the worst (for physicians, at least). It's still one of my favorite jobs, though, for whatever that is worth.

Hi, thank you for making this video. I am thinking about going to PA school in the future. I do not intend to offend or hurt anyone by making this comment. I just want to have your opinion and maybe that of other PAs as well. I am a bit insecure and that is silly, I should admit... I have been reading online about PA career being a “joke”. And a bunch of doctors say that PAs are incompetent and they don’t even deserve to work in the medical field, especially the salary that PAs earn is a waste. Shared opinions I have read online also mention that PAs are not useful and it is just a career that should have not existed. The same opinions are shared by patients. I also know that nurse practitioners are belittled for the same reason. They are not MDs and they don’t have the right to treat patients as doctors do. Furthermore, I have been reading online that PAs are just average education and they don’t know much about medicine because they only spend 2 years in school while doctors spend more than 8 years. It is true that doctors have a very intense and difficult education and training. I should acknowledge that. But I was thinking that if nurses and PA did not exist, it would be so difficult for doctors. I wonder why nurses are not being respected and acknowledged for all the skills that they know and that doctors only practiced in their learning. My friend in medical school told me that nurses know so so so so much about certain crucial skills needed to treat patients that are taken for granted. I feel crushed by this information and to be honest it hurts me. I am not even a PA! I am also the type who wants to be respected and I value knowledge a lot. I love learning and I really want to be very knowledgeable, it is just because learning is my passion. I believe that my insecurities come from the fact that there are so many things to learn that I don’t know and won’t be able to learn at the same extent as doctors do at least. Doctors know a lot but at the same time, the things they know come from scientists who have done research for years. And also, at the same time scientists are taken for granted by certain patients and belittled by certain doctors. I just love the human body, biology, and health/medical sciences. I want to be a PA so that I can also put all of this knowledge that I will gather as a scientist in application by practicing medicine. But I should also admit that it will hurt me when I will be hearing comments like this made constantly by some patients, doctors, nurses, etc... I know and understand that it is not humble and t is crazy impossible to know everything. From what I have seen in life so far, every field and skills are so important for humans life. People who clean all day long are doing a great task for us, but some of us find a way to disrespect them because they don’t have an education. I also saw that there are careers that don’t even require much education with great pay, and extremely important. It just amazes me. I am learning to be more humble every day because I feel like listening to all of these rude comments made on people who only have a high school degree (and do perfectly great jobs) can really hurt my pride. I thibk all of this comes from being prideful and this desire to be better than other people. I know that humility and respect for human beings are key! It is important to consider ourselves at the same level as fellow human beings because they have skills that we will never have... I am working on being more humble and preparing myself psychologically and emotionally to face these critics if I go to PA school. I would like to know if you could please make a video about this and how you feel as well as how other PAs feel. Furthermore, I would like to know how you face these issues and how you boost your self-esteem when you get these comments. I know that you might have faced these adversities and that you also might have to be working on being humble every day. I thank you for reading this very long comment. I will appreciate it a lot if you can make a video about these issues. I also want to congratulate you for your accomplishments. Have great success on your field!

Great points in this! I face these adversities very rarely in any of the jobs I’ve had as a PA. Most doctors are respecting of us and find us very important in their practice. On the other hand a lot of doctors are old school and aren’t comfortable with us. To each their own. Everyone has a right to their opinion and all you can do is respect that. No, It will not hinder your chances of getting into PA school. I did many of my prereqs at a community college to save money, and I am so glad that I did. Maybe places like Stanford or Emory or Duke may look down on it..not sure. But it really doesn't matter. You don't need to go to Stanford or Uc Davis or Duke to be a great PA. There are so many great schools out there and you don't need to go to a school that is that uptight that they care where you took prereqs....That is ridiculous.... Obviously, I am an example that you can succeed in PA school even if you didnt take your prereqs at an Ivy League college. Its so political these days...so sad.

@@adriano1309 Any major is fine. From what I have seen in my own experience and from what other PAs have said, any major is fine. Everyone has to take the same pre reqs anyways so that levels everyone out. Mine was in public health. But I know many people who had degrees like psychology, kinesiology, history etc. They all still had to take the same pre req classes to get into PA school anyways so it doesnt really matter. Obviously if you pick a more science based degree, you may be more prepared for the types of classes that are in PA school and it may make it easier once you are in the program, but not having a chemistry degree or biology degree is not going to make you a bad PA. The reason people pick a science based degree is because it helps you knock out the pre reqs at the same time you are getting your degree. If you take a non science based degree such as history, you will have to finish not only the classes from your degree path, but you will also have to take the additional pre reqs (that are not part of the undergrad degree) and it takes longer to finish everything...Thats what I have experienced....Hope this helps.

I’m finding it difficult to find shadowing in the area (I’m in Broward !) and I wanted to know if you have any resources to find PA shadowing. Let me ask you. What was school like as a PA? Was it really, really hard & intense? Also, how many years did it take till u graduated & how long is the internship?

I want to know more about the contracts. Many people work at-will and get screwed. Does your contract have a time span, does the employer create one, can you modify it before signing, do you take it to an employment lawyer?

Pondering a career switch from Doctor of Chiropractic to PA. Dont have a Bachelor's (not required in all states for Chiropractic), but have a shitload of natural science prerequisites because they're needed to get into chiro school along with 90 units of undergraduate school work. Wondering if I would need the bachelors in order to be able to go to PA school. Any thought?

@@beeutskindeep You get them through connections. I knew none in the beginning. Start conversations, be friendly, and share with everyone that you're going for PA school. Chances are that you'll run into one or two people who knows of a PA. I met one who knew a nephrology PA. That one PA led me to two others.

So 40 is a lot, so what were you doing with each patient and how many hours did you work to see that many? Did you ever go over time or had on calls or it was pretty much a standard time go in the morning get off around afternoon or mid day?

I worked usually 8AM-5PM until I started splitting the work then it was like 8AM-1PM ish. I was very fast so it didn't take me too long

Kendra Lynne so was the GRE difficult? And if you are going the nursing route to become an PA because you have to major in science or some time of clinical type of experience with patients. if someone graduates PA school, are you saying they can apply to any specialty they choose? How does this work if so? They get training before starting? I mean they would have to know what to prescribe, dosages, ordering certain tests, etc..Every specialty is different. I'm just curious as to how one would apply for a job to a specialty after graduating since PA school in non-specific medicine. Thanks.

It’s on the job training. You learn how to prescribe in school and you develop your own way of practice through your own studying and from learning from your supervising physician 😁

You can major in anything and go to any school as an undergrad as long as you take the prerequisites for PA school. There are programs that combine undergraduate with PA school that can be completed in 5-6 years that you can apply to right after high school.

It’s a bachelors degree in anything (usually 4 years) then applying to PA school (which is very competitive, took me 5 years) and then 2-3 years of PA school. Then you take the board exam and then you can practice. So about 6-7 years after finishing high school if you’re lucky and get straight into college. I graduated high school 10 years ago and I graduate in August which will be a little over 11 years since I graduated high school.

So right now, I’m in the military and currently in an undergrad pre-PA program. Is there anyway to still get hours for PA school besides being a medical assistant or EMT? I have another 3 years before my re-enlistment is up, and another 8 before I retire, so I’m trying to figure out what to do now. I really want to become a PA, I just done see how I can get the hours for it.

Aside from MA or EMT, you could be a scribe. Or even volunteer! Some schools don’t require it to be a “job” per say. You just need to look at their requirements ☺️

Most, if not all, PA jobs in my area require at least 1 year of experience as PA in order to be considered for the job. If I'm a new graduate, and all of the jobs require me to have experience, where do i get that experience from? Does the clinical year go towards my experience, or would I need to find a job that will allow new graduates? Thanks!

Yes, your clinical year experience should count, but there are job listings that also will say if they accept new grads or not. If you know which field you want to work in, I would do all my electives in that field to increase your chances of getting hired :) &/OR you can use a head hunter and they will look for jobs that are new grad friendly

As a new grad FNP in the DMV area started out making 90K in family medicine with profit sharing awarded at the end of the year. After this, worked Locum's and earned 177K per year (no benefits). Then after this, took full time hospitalist job and salary is ~135K per year with guaranteed annual raises, 5 weeks PTO, 3 days CME time off, and 2000$ toward CME, etc. Cool to see your videos and interesting to see what earnings are like in FL as a PA.

Get a copy of First-Aid USMLE Step 1. It’s a USMLE board review book for medical students taking their Step 1 boards which contains all of the high-yield information you’ll need to know for things like this.

Hahahaha. MRSA doesn’t equal endocarditis. MRSA is a strain of staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to methicillin/naficillin/oxacillin. Infections are determine by most common organism and thus coverage that is needed - for example, intrabdominal infections require gram negative and anaerobic coverage. Urinary tract infections require gram negative coverage (to cover for E. coli, the most common urinary pathogen), unless of course it’s ESBL then they require meropenem. Endocarditis is a disease process and not all endocarditis is due to MRSA (you can have fungal and streptococcal endocarditis). This girl seems very nice but this is why you go to medical school. Things cannot be so over simplified and cook book. This person doesn’t even know that endocarditis is an infection of the heart valve, not to be confused with myocarditis which a totally different disease process that is usually viral and affects the actual heart muscle. What is she going to do when she get a consult for antibiotic recommendations for an immunocompromised patient with neutropenic fever who is allergic to penicillins and other beta-Lactam antibiotics?!? Change her mind, and go be a Derm PA 2 months later? This is why doctors go to school for so long and do 3-7 years of residency PLUS fellowship.

Her trivializing and dummying down infectious disease to just ordering some antibiotics, X-rays, and some blood cultures, in addition to getting off at every day at 1 PM is a joke. Yes you have to look at wounds and examine them if you’re going to practice medicine.

bbehgam I’ve seen many IVDU patients with endocarditis, is that usually viral or fungal? It makes sense that you would need anaerobic coverage for an intraabdominal infection, considering the bacteria grows in absence of oxygen. What you are saying makes sense to me, yet I’m not a doctor, although I’ve spent ten years seeing the insides of thousands of patients as a CT technologist. Now I’m making the transition to PA school. I very much acknowledge that I will not be a doctor and I don’t want to be. However, I know that PAs are an important part of the team. I feel that my past experience is only going to make me a better one. Thanks for your informative post.

lolgirl182 All people are different. You will sometimes work under a doctor who likes you or not. Either you fall under their wing or don’t. If you just play your role you would be just fine. (Some friends are PA’s in Michigan and all get along with their supervisors.

PAs usually take the more routine, non-complex patients so that the doctors can focus on the more difficult ones. PAs help to make their jobs easier because they help to take the pressure off them. The physician-PA team is an important one, and if you work under a doctor who doesn’t respect you, it won’t take you very long to find one that will. The best doctors are the ones who work with a team mindset and don’t look down on others. As long as you know your limitations and work within them, there shouldn’t be a problem.

I know RN's that make 80-100k doing bedside nursing. Most of them have 5-7 years of experience.Thats a crazy low figure

Yup! But that’s 5-7 years of experience and probably working night shifts and overtime. I also make significantly more than this now after 3 years.

FloraNova You can find what information you need using the internet, which is what you’re doing now. The requirements generally follow the premed track, but anyone will tell you to major what your interested in and then complete those requirements. If you’re looking at a specific school check to see what their prerequisites are because they can vary. Hope this helps!

I did research and answered some of my own questions but then it raised new ones lol. You can generally major in whatever right? I'm doing my classes online. Originally I was going to major in Fisheries and Wildlife. They do not have a biology major BUT they do have biology as a minor. So would that be acceptable?

@@FloraNovax3 for medical and PA school you can literally major in whatever you want, doesn't have to be related to science at all. You just have to take the prerequisites the PA school requires to get in (all the biology, chemistry and math courses, they list the classes you need on their website...the science classes usually aren't online because there is lab). and try to do very well in them. If anything, I feel like having a non-science major can really make you an interesting applicant but that's up for debate. I hear they love getting to know applicants are diverse and more than just all about medicine, so I think it helps. Also, PA schools tend to require direct patient care experience. Where I live, hours working as a scribe counted for the schools I looked into so I did that. Im actually pursuing med school now instead of PA, but I figured I'd share what I know :)

You do not have to take the NCLEX for PA school. You take the GRE

A lot of people look down on community colleges but the BEST way in my opinion is to go to a community and get your ASN (because after getting it you can work as a nurse) then get your BSN online because it is half the cost rather than transferring to a University. Then with those 2 years of nursing experience it would make it look better while getting into your 2-3 year PA program and there ya go. The reason I suggest getting the ASN rather than just the BSN is because 1.) you get experience ,and 2.) you get paid a lot more than just doing a regular job with no degree. That’s my look on it but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Hope I helped!

Sage J it’s 4 years of undergrad (or whatever it takes to get your bachelors) and then 2-3 years for your masters degree (PA school). I graduate PA school in August finally.

I research a lot and plan a lot.
