My First Impressions of America | Inconsequential Stories

I'm in the US for the first time and I think America is friendly and big.
Also, find out how I fail at life at Denny's.

Stories about Europeans visiting America and finding everything "big" is a common theme and reminds me of this joke about drunk foreigner who fell into the hotel swimming pool and, in a panic, started screaming "DON'T FLUSH! DON'T FLUSH!"

If you ever get a chance to come to Texas, you'll have to try smoked brisket (beef). It is slow cooked (about 10 hours) and it melts in your mouth (I mean that almost literally). The only bad thing is that once you have it, any other form of beef will be forever unsatisfying. Also, while in the south, try biscuits with gravy. They're not too big (about the size of a baseball), but they do taste good and weigh less 5 Kg. :)

i know what you mean about the food. i very rarely eat out. i would recommend getting the a la cart items or sides. i know that at dennys they have a $2, $4, $6, $8, menu or something like that, well they have it in Southern California where i live. its called the 2, 4, 6, 8 menue i think and its cheaper and a bit smaller. i would recommend getting soda or iced tea because there are free refills and im sure those are also cheaper than getting a milk shake or other fancy drink. also a glass of water with ice is always free. i would make sure its purified but it should be lol. that would be weird if it was just tap water lol.

I wouldn't have thought that Denny's is an ideal place to get your first taste of America. I think of it as maybe a place truckers run in to eat; not the best representation of American food. But I'm glad you got something to eat.

I don't get why all foreigners think Americans only eat fast food. Most Americans think it's horrific, but what's the first thing a foreigner do when they get here? Dive headfirst into a Cinnabon like a honey badger, then wash that down with a 5 Guys burger for lunch, while the dip the fries in the chocolate shake. (I've seen it!) then let's go to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. My God! NO! Just because we have all that stuff doesn't mean you should eat it everyday. To the foreigners that say all Americans are fat, I'd like to see you come on over here for a year & see how thin you'd stay. You'll soon see the struggle.

Probably because the largest "quick service" restaurant companies in Europe as of 2012, in terms of sales, were 1] McDonald's, 2] Yum!(KFC + Pizza Hut), 3] Burger King, 4] Autogrill, 5] Quick, 6] Subway 7]Domino's, and 8] Starbucks. If you go around Western Europe, I can't think of any American thing you'd see more often.

I was in Germany to visit my sister and I thought Germany was big, people were surprisingly friendly, the food was great and fresh, the portion size was about equal to what I would receive in the US. I immediately felt like home. I think the difference is I didn't have a preconceived notion of Germany based on what was on the television and I wasn't judgemental like Europeans.

They tried Denny's here in Jersey but they went out of business here because Jersey is the diner capital of the world. We have more diners (24 hours at that) than any other place in the world. Too bad you had to experience Denny's. Hopefully you'll try better places next time, and I traveled to Europe, and other places, and Americans in comparison are friendlier. I hope you realize that most of the developed world is liberal compared to the US. Your "good standards" are actually kind of outdated traditions more than anything. I think it is funny to see this comment on a video posted by a Brittish girl since most Brittish people think the US is not liberal enough. Being from the south I imagine you have been taught that conservative ideas are much better in every way and I don't expect my comment to impact your beliefs at all. The one thing I wish is that conservative republicans could at least try to use facts to back their ideas.

+Nicholas Bakken LOL! Look at Sweden, Germany, France and the UK. Their immigration is LITERALLY causing the people to revolt. Their tax rates are off the roof. Liberals are essentially destroying their once great and gorgeous countries. Sweden will soon be third word, as will Germany in no time with the refugee invasion. Also, her standards are not "Outdated'. I know that may shock your HIP and PROGRESSIVE movement. I know it may help to elucidate your point by flooding it with condescension, but the facts are AGAINST you my friend. The top 10 poorest cities in the U.S. ARE ALL DEMOCRATIC RUN.

Our food is big because it's a country of Abundance especially food. Americans used to be very hard working we got very hungry and had the food. America is young, Britain came over and other Immigrants and we had to build and farm the entire country. That work requires a lot of food. The industrial revolution and before Americans worked hard and needed that extra food for strength. Often when working we'll skip lunch and often breakfast so tend to get very hungry and when you finally eat you want a lot. It became the normal here to have big portions

You could have explained your reason for dissatisfaction. He may have offered you an alternative meal or simply not charged you for the meal.

the u s is too liberal i think. I like England, only went once, want to go again, but its true, our spaces are huge. our portion sizes are too big and unfortunately it is something we need to fix. I think Americans can learn to be more polite than we are. but i was shocked the British servers don't get tipped enough. they do an excellent job and it needs to be acknowledged in a practical way. I tried to anyway. I had an awesome time. As you are into biology, if you ever come to america again, you might be interested in my part of it. I live near U/R Strong . They should’ve put that gravy on the side for you. Not great service. And no worries. Food to go isn’t an embarrassment here.

Denny’s is awful! Fast food in general is awful. People eat it because it’s cheap. People coming to America seem to run immediately to a fast food restaurant. We have much better restaurants and most of us make our own meals at home.

You're the only person to eat that in America. Lol That was gravy for biscuits. It should never be served on turkey!!! I can't even believe they gave you that option to be honest. Wow! I mean American biscuits by the way.. (not sweets). If they brought that to ANY American, it would have been sent back. They probably had a good laugh with that one. Gross. You should have just ordered singles items. You can order 1 fried egg, some home fries or hash browns and a side of toast and a piece of bacon for example. You can order just an egg if thats what you want. You didn't have to order that huge meal.
