Fellow Houstonian here bro 🤘🏽got into the hotshot game 2 months ago and loving it. One piece of advice I’ll offer is to run the front chains thru the 2 loops behind the bucket and to throw a strap over the bucket itself. DOT will get you for not securing any accessories with a seperate strap or chain. Eventhough we all know that bucket ain’t going anywhere during transportation but we gotta do what we gotta do 🙏🏽💪🏽

If you buy a truck and get into this business you just cannot haul a load every now and then. You need money to keep your truck and little business going. Unless you have tons of money saved and pay no bills at all then thats different.

save your transmission ,when loading and unloading leave the truck in neutral set parking brake maxed out, set two wheel blocks/chocks on trailer tires, or truck fron tires, also block up rear of trailer when loading something really heavy. I seen truck trailer rolling away down a hill with rear tires of truck floating when they tried loading heavy load. Because they had no applied trailer parking brakes. Also putting truck in 4x4 with parking brake on will add parking brake force to front wheels. Definitely not always necessary but sometimes it is.

Minor tip- I folded up a business card and stuffed into the electronic brake controller sliding the manual “trolley valve” like the service brakes on our big trucks over and locking up the trailer brakes manually when I load anything. It’s a lot better than rocking your truck to bits every time you load it goes negative pressure to an immediate positive pressure and then the only thing g that’s holding you is 2 rear drive tires on your pick up that get light when you go over the back less with the ramps you have buy then immediately fall into those 2 with 6 tires behind and 2 in front acting like skates while your emergency brake shoes that are about the size of ugh is the knuckle thing holding against a little piece of fork causing force between u joints that wear and transmission gears that also wear anyways I’m surprised not one person I’ve shared my little manual electric brake trailer switch lock up idea not a single person has said… oh yeah I do that. You’ll be shocked how many people big time hot shutters never knew they didn’t have trailer brakes without that and how many thought the truck ebrake also engaged electric trailer brakes… SCARY lol… it’s fun hauling around little stuff in your pick up when I’m not dragging around a big trailer so comfy good Luck and great idea to subsidize making yourself a little more versatile just be careful on the customers who think the rate should be at a pilot car rate don’t shoot your self in the foot if you know what I mean. I didn’t even tell customers I was using the smaller set up at first just to see what they expected a rate change

About mpg, I have a 2018 f250 regular wheel base which means smaller fuel tank around 26 gal if im not mistaken. Miami to New Orleans round trip I spent around 1000$ in fuel. Diesel is very expensive now no doubt but as for weight I was close to 26k and for avg mpg I was around 9.5mpg driving VERY conservative lol. I have a 2017 Load max 36ft 8 ft wide. This trailer is about 2k lb heavier than a Kaufman 2 car hauler so I am pulling around more weight compared to a strictly 2 car hauler.

so not sure of the rules where you are but heres what you would get pulled over and dinged for where i live. 1- no gvw/tare decals or company name on truck, failure to have perscribed information. 2 tinted side windows, no tint allowed on front side windows especially on a commercial vehicle, 3 tinted windshield brow. Right there would be 1000$ in fines. One thing with these or any trailer, always disconnect the power, pull the emergency break away pin and drive forward making sure the aux battery has enough power to lock the trailer brakes. It is the number one reason these trailers get put out of service where you sit until its fixed, which usually means calling a mobile mechanic service, and another 300$ ticket on top. You may not have the same rules.

You don’t need a CDL as long as you don’t operate over 26,000 lbs combined weight. I do hotshot with a 2022 F250 and a 40 ft gooseneck. Out in Pennsylvania right now all the way from Houston TX. I have 2 partial loads on me right now. A skid steer kind of like the one in the video headed to Colorado. And an industrial pallet wrapping machine headed to Utah. The skid steer is 6,630 lbs and the machine is right under 3,000 lbs. that weight plus the weight of the truck and trailer is still under 26,000 lbs. So im good on the weight limits. One VERY IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind though. Let’s say If your truck says it can tow 16,000 lbs on the door sticker and your gooseneck says it can hold let’s say 14,000 lbs. that means you can “officially tow 30,000 lbs”. And because of that reason. DOT will put you out of service if you don’t have a CDL to tow over 26k lbs. the way around that is to have your trailer “derated” at the dealership you bought it at. They’ll literally print a sticker you can put on it that says it can only hold “10,000 lbs” so that way you’ll be at or under the 26K limit. Hope this helps!
