My First Guitars | Thu Le

Музыка

Like every person has a story every guitar has a story, too. In this video I am talking about all my previous guitars from my first guitars to the ones that I had during my student days. I will also tell you some stories about them and some milestones that I have been through with them. I hope I can inspire you with my stories about my guitars: I had my first guitar when I was 3 years old…
The rest of the story is in my video!
Please feel free to share your stories about your guitars / instruments in the comments and we can inspire each other!
...............................................................................................................................................
I would like to share my passion for classical guitar and inspire you with my music.
Hopefully I can also add value to the community through my channel on KZread.

Dear Thu Le, you are a wonderful story teller! My wife and I enjoyed your story and pictures very much!!! I admire your self control to not yell at your daughter when she dropped your guitar! 😳 We are so impressed and amazed how a tiny girl from Hanoi from a very modest family has made such a worldwide impact with the stunning level of playing you have achieved. If you write your autobiography, I will happily pay extra for an autographed copy!!! Please accept our best wishes for continuing success in your playing career and happiness for your family. 💖💖💖 From Todd & Julia

I love your humble stories. My life was similar to yours and my parents could not afford to send me to music school or pay for private lessons. We had an old piano at home and I learned to read music when I was 7 or 8 by a relative. Then I learned the music cords too in 1980s. I think I learned so much from that old piano. Today my day job is not related to music and I can afford an expensive grand piano. I was at a concert tonight and I saw so many parents pampered their kids which never happened to me. I played a simple piece not to show off to kids. People came to me and said I played piano so good. But I wish I could tell them how I learned the music. Don't worry about your old guitars as long as you have a better one. They are just some wood and metals. But your daughter learned a lesson that you could have never thought her in any other way. She will always remember she broke your beloved guitar and you glued it back together. That is what mom is for!

Thu Le you made a grown man cry with pride! From scrappy humble roots you rose! Tiny, only 5, but with fingers like 3 years old. Fighting them against old, rusted steel! Pushing your fingers to their limits and more! Perhaps, with your belly a little empty, tummy growling, waiting for dinner that will be modestly portioned! Intense determination to conquer these steel strings attached to a piece of wood that you could paint beautiful sounds. Encouraged by the love and care from your artistic father! From humble roots you blossomed. Focused, Intense, proud, you diligently challenged each of these special guitars to blossom into the humble, loving, nurturing, inspiring, thoughtful human beings. Virtuoso artistic mastery of the guitar that can express every range of emotions in a way that only you can produce! I would love to hear another story about your experiences with your Japanese friend and what she's doing now, have you reunited with her? Perform together? A story about what it was like to be only 7 and learning in these disciplined situations, your competition you won..... 🙏❤😊 Thanks so much for being such a special person

Dear Thu Le, First, I want to thank you for all your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your musicality with us ! It's very useful, and very appreciated by guitarists like me, who don't have your talent, but can improve day by day with your kind assistance. This video is not the most profitable (technically speaking) but the most moving, and then the most inspiring for us all ! As you suggested it, I dare to share my own little "guitar story". We don't have the same musical background. I started to play in the early eighties, dreaming of joining a band and becoming a famous rock guitar player one day (!), like so many teenagers. I wasn't rich either, but to be honest, it was far much easier for a french yougster to access to decent instrument for an affordable price, compared to what it was for vietnamese players of that time ! However, good, (or even decent) instruments very beyond my range. In my early twenties, I started playing seriously with a band who splitted after a few years. But I remained friend with the singer of my band, who offered me his guitar one day. It was an Ibanez folk model (AE400 TV) : nothing exceptional, but much better than any other I ever had before. Time passed, I started a new band, more serious and more successful : my Ibanez became my best friend : I wrote songs with her, played it on recordings, brought her on stage. One day, this band broke up. For some time, I kept on writing songs for other people and myself. But after a few years, I had to admit that I wasn't talented enough to keep on playing full time. It made me so sad that I decided to forget about playing. I stored my guitar under a bed for years. The guitar came back in my life when I became a father : I started using it to play child songs to my kids, and then, step by step, my Ibanez brought me back to musical practice. My daughter broke it first when she was 6 years old, and a few month later, my son did exactly the same. Both times, the guitar was broken on the headstock. Both times, I brought it to a luthier, who asked why I was so stubborn, wanting to fix this "not that good" guitar when I could almost buy a new one for the price of the repair. But as you explained it in such a moving way, the attachment when have for an instrument is sometimes above any financial concern. Almost 40 years after the arrival of this guitar in my life, she is still around, now played by my son who has become a guitar player too. Thanks again for your beautiful story about your early guitars, and for reminding us how important an instrument can be, for us or for the ones who can't get one. Offering an instrument to someone who really needs one is maybe the most beautiful gift we can make.

What a beautiful story! I’m sure you could make beautiful music on any instrument that you take in your hands. It’s not the price of the guitar or the name of the builder, but the heart and soul of the person who is using it. Growing up in the late 1950s I remember my parents loved Spanish guitar music, and they worked hard to save money to buy my older brother an electric guitar. They couldn’t afford to buy lessons for all three of us boys, so the oldest one went to lessons and he in turn taught us younger boys how to play. Your story means a lot to me because you were able to overcome a lot of obstacles and you are pursuing your own musical dreams. Thank you for this amazing story, and may Heaven bless you and your family, whatever your ambitions and aspirations!

I love seeing the emotion and expression in your eyes and face when you talk about your guitars and the people who helped you along the way. My first guitar, a Sears and Roebuck Silvertone, was passed on to me from my brother when he bought a new guitar. I wish I still had it, but I still have the memories of learning a few chords and playing songs with my brother. I love your videos Thu Le. Best wishes always, Jon

With her playing she's able to move me and now, listening to her story, I understand why. I'm a musician too, 61 y.o., not as good a musician as this beautiful woman but I was good enough to earn my bread for most of my life and I learnt pretty soon a lesson: you put in your music exactly who and what you are, no more, no less. So this woman had lived a lot, experienced a lot, suffered and struggled a lot to reach her dream, and her family struggled as well and made so many sacrifices to help her on her way in any way possible. And she had friends and mentors who recognised the quality within and helped her and I bet she's so grateful for all the love and support she received. We can hear all these things coming out through her hands, directly from her heart and soul and this, my friends, it's the thing that makes all the difference of the world for an artist. All my love and respect to you, Thu Le, keep on make this crazy world a better place with your beauty and your guitar. 💖

Your videos that innvolve your daughters playing guitar are also so refreshing. They are a credit to you. Dear Thu Le.... So wonderful to hear your story. I wish not to post my life story here. I have a Brasilian guitar, signature Sergio Abreu, performed by Abreu. Maybe you have heard of Abreu? I can no longer play it, as I have now spinal problems and arthritis in my hands. However, in the hands of a master, the guitar projects very well, has very good intonation, and a very sweet sound. It is now 40 years old, has been around the world, and remains in excellent playing condition. I doubt the woods can be replaced; rosewood, pernambuco, Italian spruce, bone, etc. I have tried many brands of strings, but it sounds best with Savarez blue. Difficult to part with it, but maybe someday I will find a good home for it.

Unfortunatly, I just got a guitar when I was 16 years old, couse I was very poor, and my family didn't have money tô buy me... But, thanks God, today I can get a good instruments and sometimes I can give then to people that don't have money for it. Well, I think I stretched a lot. My fist guitar was steel string and provided by my father. He sang in quartets and the sound of those harmonies are my first musical memories. I wasn’t even old enough to have language but I remember being held in my mothers arms, the lights being turned off and the sound of that first sung chord. The thrill was physical. I deeply regret letting that instrument get away from me. I’ll bet we have one skill in common. Learning to tie those broken steel strings back together. That, I do not miss. (in the event that you ever find yourself having to do that again, (God forbid 🙏) a pair of strong forceps really helps). Thanks so much for sharing yourself with us. You’ve enriched and edified me by your efforts and existence.🕊💐🌹💐🕊

I'm in tears...what a great story.....really wonderful to see the pictures. Love that your guitar's.....no matter what the name or status mean so much to you. I have always felt the same.....my first (1970) was stolen......my second met a similar unhappy accident as yours's and became unplayable. While none were big name brands.....my guitars are precious to me......no matter what they are.....like children. I have never much understood people selling their guitars.....though I'm happy they did......because I got to buy them. I could no more sell any of my guitars than I could sell my arms legs or fingers (though sometimes I feel I should definitely sell my head).......perhaps I'm just a sentimental old fool.....but they are to me like an extension of my soul and story..... consoled me in hard times and brought much joy in happier ones.....have kept me centered in my humanity.....which is.....for better or for worse......what I am. Thank you for your lessons and inspiration and sharing your heart. You are a gem. 💖🎸💖🎼💖🌈🌈🌈

Hello, Very nice story, my first guitar was given to me by my brother who passed 10 years ago. He found it in front of a house on the ground, it was in a pretty good condition insite it's box. So i was quite happy and play it for more than 15 years. As i was playing with a friend in his house, i had to go and let the guitar just for a couple of days but he never give me back this guitar and disappear with it. Tried to found him but with no success. I'll never forget this guitar and still now, i'm thinking.

Great stories Thu Le, My guitar stories wasn't even better than yours. My first cheap guitar brand after a motorcycle, Kawasaki. that always out of tune. My first guitar teacher was my uncle that has very limited guitar skill, I can't afford to get to a private course at music school. So I figure out pretty much everything by myself back then no internet era. My grandpa gave me money to buy my first cheap electric guitar (Prince) still have it today and re-build it after Eddie Van Halen Frankernstrat. Now I afford to buy some guitars. I had 4 electric guitars, 1 bass and 1 acoustic guitar. If there was a branded on my guitar, it's not a premium expensive one that I own and I love them all :)

A long story with many adventures. What I do not get together, you look between 25 and 30 years. How come you experienced so many things. I got my first violin at my age of 10. As we could not afford buying an instrument I borrowed a 3/4 violin from my school. After 3 years later my mother surprised me with an instrument she bought from a luthier next town. She paid 500 DM for it in 1963 (around 125 $ that time). I know it was the best possible my mother could afford. My violin teacher said it was a saxonian instrument and quite good. However I never really was content with it but I never said it. The neck was a bit narrow and I had difficulties with my thick fingers. Also the sound was a bit thin. When I was 21 I bought my own which I have till now. My brother got a guitar but I played more with it than he did. It was fun but I never got beyond playing chords or simple melodies. It was in the late sixties and I was a big fan of Andre Segovia. However, what he did was just too high above of all I could ever dream of. But I dreamt - till now. So each time I'm listening to your play the dream comes back.

Very compelling story. It reminds me of my childhood. My first guitar I made it myself. I found a guitar neck in a garbage pile and proceeded to construct the body painstakingly. The sound was terrible. The strings dug deep into my fingers. But it gave me great joy. I left it behind when I migrated from Haiti to New York. However I sitll can't stop the sadness and occasional tears thinking about it. Best of luck, good health and continuing success. You are the best. From Eddy

So interesting and captivating! Thu, I love these kind of personal stories! Cutest ever childhood photos! I still have my student model Ramirez that I purchased new, $440 USD (1973 when in college) from a man in Woodside California. He and his wife bought two of these guitars in Spain and brought them home thinking he would keep one and give the other to his daughter. His daughter was not interested in learning guitar thus his selling it to me. I was fortunate to know luthier John Gilbert who personally installed his signature tuners and did some other work, including putting a slight radius on the fretboard for ease of playing. I stopped playing for some years and actually was going to sell my Ramirez but thankfully my wife talked me out of it. Glad she did because I dusted off my guitar and starting playing again about 15 years later! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful guitar journey!

Now that I am retired, I have taken up guitar so that I can experience music. I spent what I would spend on a computer and bought a concert guitar, a Yamaha GC32. It is a beautiful instrument. I bought a good guitar because I will probably only buy one and, when it sounds bad, I know it is my fault! I didn’t buy a better guitar because I don’t want to take those away from the people who can really play them. What a beautiful, inspiring story. I like especially the part where you say, “But don’t worry, I didn’t yell at her” when your young daughter had the accident with your much prized guitar. It says lots about you and your precious family. I recently purchased a very good used Spanish flamenco guitar, my first professional quality guitar, and I am following your excellent instruction, starting with tremolo technique. THANK YOU!

Your story made me so emotional as it was kind of similar to mine. My first concert guitar (around 30 USD) that i performed in your city Hanoi in 1985. I was there 3 months to practice and perform several times. That was such a beautiful memory in my life. Thanks for sharing your touched and beautiful story. ♥️♥️♥️

I owned 3 guitars in my life.Sadly I did not pursue a goal to progress to a level of professional guitarist. I think to become such a great guitarist takes more than interest and ambition. You worked for it consistently Thu le so as to have passion for perfection. Job well done.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful guitar journey! The struggle your family had to went through in order to give you the best 💖✨! I have a secondhand Antonio Marin Montero 1978 No.212. Borrowed money from my grandparents to buy it which I paid back! I’m now 63. Hopefully wishing my grandchild will play the guitar! 🤗

It is wonderful to hear such a story that underscores how important an interested father can be. But you certainly do him great honor and I'm sure he's very proud. I am amazed at your passion to persevere your talent to reach this stage. I am curious why you did not start with a ukulele at a young age which is more easier instead of a little steel string guitar? Sad your daughter dropped your guitar but glad you did not yell at her. The scratch on that guitar will remind you of the pain you went through learning guitar at such a tender age. You are one of a kind Thu Le.

This was an exciting adventure to hear about your beginnings and struggles through the years to where you are now. The best part for me was when your daughter dropped your first paid for guitar, a prized possession. You chose not to scold her even when this hurt you deeply ... a very wise choice. A guitar can be replaced or fixed reguardless of the importance. A daughter cannot. Once again you have kept me on the edge of my seat as you share these memories and the continuing growth of those 2 precious students of yours. May God richly bless you and your family!
