July 1946 - two atomic bombs were test-detonated by the U.S. navy near Bikini atoll...and by chance the dinosaur-creature from Odo island was swimming close by and was exposed to the blast, causing it to mutate into the monster we usually think of when we hear the name "Godzilla".

My first Godzilla movie was in1968, here in Australia we had a guy that dressed as a ghoul on Friday nights and called himself Deadly Earnest, he would intro old black and white monster movies like the creature from the black lagoon and the day the earth stood still... but each week you hoped and prayed it would be the big fella from Tokyo. 😁

After the end of the war, Japan was defeated...reduced to zero. Then Godzilla shows up and knocks the whole country down one more notch...hence the title "Minus One".

this year marks the 70th anniversary of Godzilla, and all the Godzilla movies that have been made in Japan and America. If you only see 1 Godzilla movie in your life, make it this one, as it really makes you care more for the people, so that the stakes are higher... Godzilla Minus One is the perfect movie in story telling, writing, acting, music, special effects. it has it all! and regarding your comments about the government's response to Godzilla? well, that's what Shin Godzilla was about!

The unique thing with Godzilla is he can be a good guy or bad guy depending on the interpretation of the character. Even in ones where he’s the antagonist like Minus One or the original 1954 film, there’s a sense of tragedy because he’s presented as a creature who never asked to be mutated. Humanity’s atomic testings not only mutated him but traumatized him to now be in constant pain/anger hence why he attacks cities. However as time went on after the original 1954 movie in the sequels/reboots, he became more of a anti-hero fighting evil monsters that threaten his home, Earth. I hope you react to the current American movies called “The Monsterverse.” The films so far are Godzilla (2014), Kong Skull Island, Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs Kong, & Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. There is also a show set in the Monsterverse called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

This has truly been an absolute joy to see the reaction to your first godzilla film! I love the edits and your commentary, it’s sharp, and really funny and fun, I had a great time thank you so very much! As for other Godzilla films with a decent story, “Shin Godzilla” (2016) is pretty interesting, I think you would like it.

Yeah classic Godzilla movie: nobody knows how to run away from him. They run right in front of him or they stop and watch him. Meanwhile, all Black people would be completely out of the city because we would’ve taken a turn at some point and we would not have stopped running. :)

You picked the right version of the subtitles. The closed captions were awful. One instance was when Noriko says I forbid you to die, in the CC version she says I dont want that to happen to you. Changes the whole meaning

There was some homage to the original Godzilla films. The attack on the train using the practical effects, making Godzilla look similar to the original guy in the rubber suit and the music.

This movie takes place after the Japanese were defeated in WWII. They were occupied by the Americans and their military was being completely dismantled. What government there was wasn’t really in charge of much other than recovering from the war and didn’t have anything or any way to fight off something like Godzilla. If this had really happened a citizen only response would probably be their only option.

So before you go down the rabbit hole... Godzilla is the atomic bomb disguised as a monster. That was the intent of the original 1954 movie and MINUS ONE reminded audiences where Godzilla came from and what it represented. Godzilla was a still surviving dinosaur that was inadvertently irradiated and mutated by the U.S. testing atomic weapons.

Nah you don't need to know anything from past godzillas to understand whats happening. There are some basic things in history you need to know around WW 2 but you seem to know. Its all good. Shin Godzilla made in 2016 was somewhat similar one off godzilla movie, but was focused more on the goverment side, its a lot less personal and more about the whole, but I liked it.

@@Darkly_i_Shine The 1954 is in Japanese and the 1956 is in English with American actors cut into the movie is the real major difference. They are almost the exact same movie and story. I will say there is one scene cut out of the 1956 American movie because of how dark and grim it was but I do not want to spoil it incase you watch the 1954 one. If I was you I would check out both but I am a big Godzilla fan. I would also recommend The Return of Godzilla 1984 as well as the entire Heisei movies. They range from 1984 to 1995. There are 7 movies in total in that series. They are all chronological and have a over arching story just like the MCU but 20 years before the MCU was a thing.

Technically there are kamikaze pilots that survived the war, as in they where appointed as one, where training or waiting to deploy and the war ended, its not like all of them where deserters.
