My First Gibson: Gilby Clarke

Growing up as a fan of The Rolling Stones, KISS and David Bowie, Gilby Clarke fell in love with guitar at an early age while living in Cleveland, Ohio. While working at a gas station one summer afternoon, he discovered his very first Gibson that would end up becoming his go to guitar throughout his entire career.

My first Gibson was pretty special. I was 16 in 1986. It was a 1955 Southern Jumbo. Cost $1100 NZD saved up from my paper run money and then my apprentice wages. Had quite a few since. Current one is a 1997 Les Paul Studio. It was intended to be a stepping stone to replacing ones I had sold. But I ended up sticking with the Studio because it has such a good tone. I always like to have a Strat around too, because they have a sound a Gibson does not do. They hardly get played, so i always end up selling them for the next gear purchase. Next one will be a Squire so I do not get tempted to sell it due to infrequent use. One that somebody has maintained frets on and modded etc. I like SGs too and want to check out the new original series ones. Will have to wait. Just woke up and my active studio monitors are crapped out. Transformers I think. No juice. Listening thru AKG phones and only the right side is working. Annoying because my amp does not have a cab. I do the load box to DAW thing. Is going to take some time because I am laid up getting treatment for busted up spine and I am not going to be able to go back to my old job they say. The SG will have to wait. Next year maybe. Pissed off, but that's life. If it was easy we would live forever.

I believe his Deluxe originally had mini humbuckers not “single coil pickups”

My first Gibson is a Les Paul Studio 1983. It was awful. The neck had tar on it over the huge scratches in paint and it was brand new. I still have her though.

Why would someone want one with so much negativity attached to them in all reviews, But the single cut/les paul design is my favourite.
