I could not agree more, as you describe very aptly, science classes in foreign languages tend to be quite straightforward because the specific vocabulary tends to be similar. The poem appears to written in Berlin dialect which definitely signifies asking too much from an American schoolgirl. Do not let such excessive demands discourage you !

Hi, the breaks are really easy to calculate, The lessons are always 45 min, which means e.g on Monday your first brake is from 9:00 to 9:15 between Bio and Deutsch ;-)

hi!! i’m happy my video was nice to watch :) i made one about my first day of my first internship but i’ve been a bit of a procrastinator lately 😂 i’m sooo grateful we could come in person. it’s definitely difficult w all the covid restrictions, especially where i’m placed, but i’m just happy to be here. it would stink to have the year cut short like you guys :( but i hope you still enjoyed it!

So the poem "Wiegenlied by Margarete Beutler" is tough stuff. Its written in the broadest Berlin Dialect and it describes the really pathetic cirumstances of the lowest classes, that did not have any other pleasure and perspective than to drink themselves to an early grave. So from the full spectrum of poems written in the language of thinkers and poets (German) you got probably one of the worst depiction of our culture....

hehe, in this dialect we have a saying to make fun of our "j": 'ne jut jebrat'ne Jans is 'ne jute Jabe Jottes :-) and if someone doesn't live in the center, he lives "jwd" (janz weit draußn) :-) btw: even though i was born here and live here all my life, i myself can't understand some people from certain regions of the city or around it when they speak fast and with thick accent :-) :-(

@@Anson_AKB You might need to give our friend Julia from "beyond the pond" a slight hint about the old Berlina saying: " 'ne jut jebrat'ne Jans is 'ne jute Jabe Jottes " translates to " A good fried goose is a great gift of god . " We have a similar "problem" with our franconian friends here in Bavaria: They lost not 1 but 2 consonants from the alphabet. p and t are not existing in fraconian dialect. They only slightly distinct between a soft and a hard "b" and "d". Like they say Babier mit 2 hadden "b"s or Dande with 2 hadde "d".

The German teacher gave you a text in dialect, that's of course different to the standard German, which makes it harder to learn the language. Usually at school it should be standard German, in your free time you will get a lot of opportunities to hear the dialects. Lessons depending on every teacher and how good he/she/it is. Leipzig, Riesa, Meißen, Dresden or the Erzgebirge are different with there dialects even if it's the same federal state. If you get the opportunity to travel to these places use it, Dresden has a lovely Christmas market, Meißen is famous for porcelain, the Erzgebirge is famous for traditional stuff made of wood, Leipzig has interesting international trade fairs and if possible try to visit the Spreewald in spring, it's like a fairytale. @@julsjourneys if everything works quite normal, it's definitely worth it. Die Semperoper, die Frauenkirche und der Zwinger are really nice. Der Semperoper Ball is really cool.

Im Stundenplan stehen nur die Startzeiten. Eine Schulstunde entspricht 45 Minuten. Dazwischen sind Pausen.

I think the vocabulary used in science is easier because most of these things are "new" having been discovered in the last hundred years or so.At that time languages were already mixing in scientific circles and often just used in the other language as well( or just copied from another language like Latin: integral , difference, add/addieren). And from the scientist it slowly sank down to us normal folks. I still remember how I changed my vocab when leaving Grundschule and starting Gymnasium: In Grundschule habe ich Zahlen voneinander abgezogen oder zusammengezählt, im Gymnasium habe ich subtrahiert oder addiert. Which is a lot closer to the Latin derived words in English.

You should look at some vlog which discuss "old English" and you will be surprised how many "German" expressions/sounds/words you will recognize. One example: Did you know English literature knows not just "twenty-five" but also "five and twenty" (like in German)?

10:00 Well - was it really an embarrassing moment or a fun little story to tell for the future? 14:00 It is German - looks like a version of Plattdeutsch. What even many Germans don't realize that there's actually two german languages, Hochdeutsch and Niederdeutsch/Plattdeutsch. However Plattdeutsch, which was widely spoken all across the northern and central parts of Germany in the past, has almost vanished and was replaced by Hochdeutsch. The terms Hochdeutsch and Niederdeutsch are descriptive btw - Plattdeutsch/Niederdeutsch has this name because it was spoken in lowlands of the North, while Hochdeutsch has its name because it originates in the mountains of the south. While the southern dialects are just that - dialects from High German - Low German is another language. The other option is that it is actually the written form of one of our many dialects. Oh and an additional piece of information that might be interesting to you: The language the Amish in the USA speak is actually Low German/Plattdeutsch, and the english language itself is also based on Low German. Old English and Old Low German are actually the same language, also known as Old Saxon - the language the Saxons spoke when they conquered England. Because of this modern Low German and modern English actually still have a lot in common.

@@ulliulli Berlinerisch has a lot of Plattdeutsch influences. It is essentially a "Missinsch", a mix between high German spoken by the upper class and the platt spoken by the lower classes. Hamburgisch is in a way similar.

I just noticed that I do not really understand what you vocational exchange program is about. I only know the "standard exchange" where Americans visit a German Gymnasium for ten months/ one year but you are going in a different direction, aren't you? Does one of your vlogs explain more about that? Or a website by cbyx or whatever?

be honest, communicate through your answers how adaptable/open-minded you are, and if you get to the interview round they may speak some easy german with you if you stated you already know some german (i’m not sure for other programs, but this was everyone for the vocational program. or if you know another language but not german, they may ask for that instead) good luck!!

@@superlook7228 I partly agree you need a modern teaching like studieing sources, going deep into a topic look at different subjects their. Look at the science and their disscousions about at topic. Visit places and so on. If you have to learn 100 of dates for a period it's so far far outdated

To be honest, I wouldn't blame you in case if you don't understand the poem at all. Really hard stuff to read while just starting to learn high German due to the poem being written in such dialect. Regarding the lengths of your lessons. Each lesson starts at the given time as printed and is running for about 45 minutes. Usually between 2 lessons you have at least a break for 5 minutes. Or longer like the 15 min. break after the second lesson or the two 25 min. breaks after 10:50 and 12:00. Being unsure about the first 2 lessons - maybe its a "Doppelstunde" so either no break in between or the first one stops after 40 minutes. Also unsure about a possible break for another "Doppelstunde" where the first lesson starts at 14:10 - but because it seems to be "sports" only at that time there might not be a break in between... However I'm wondering when to said that you will be at the gymnasium for 2-3 months only? Thought that those CBYX programs run for 10 months? Are you changing schools during the program or taking a shorter program?

when my classes are 2 lessons we don't get a break, so i'm not sure how it works honestly the CBYX high school programs are for a whole school year in Gymnasium, yes, but I'm doing the Vocational program. my program is based around internships more than high school, so we have 5-6 months for those

So I think the 1-2 lessons are without a break in between counting as a 2 lessons class (in Germany called Doppelstunde) as well as the 8th / 9th lessons class. This would make your lessons / breaks according to the starting times look like: 1: 7:30 - 8:15 2: 8:15 - 9:00 (15 min break) 3: 9:15 - 10:00 (5 min break) 4: 10:05 - 10:50 (25 min break) 5: 11:15 - 12:00 (25 min break) 6: 12:25 - 13:10 (5 min break) 7: 13:15 - 14:00 (10 min break) 8: 14:10 - 14:55 9: 14:55 - 15:40 And regarding to your vocational program you're at the highschool for 2-3 months and the second part working on an internship at some company. Sounds cool as well (depending on the job itself of course) 😉 So we'll see later whats all about the second part of your journey. Most important: Having fun!

The 5 min is a break for the teachers to be able to switch class rooms. If the teacher is already in the correct class no switch is necessary therefore there isn't a break.

Ask your followers here for a translation of that Berlin-dialect translation. I am willing to offer my help. That is hard stuff for you but tasks like that are brilliant material to analyze a language.

most of them were written down already. but for the few that weren't, i find that German pronunciation is a lot easier than English, so i surprisingly have an easier time with it than my native language!

@@julsjourneys I think the german pronounciation is easier than the english one, is because there is a standardization process for it since the 18.Century and the "Duden" is the "legal document" for speaking and writing in german. As you might already experienced, Germans love their rules and laws and to follow them. So also the language is regulated by law. Well, there's always been a lot of discussion about teaching local dialects. I think it would be a loss of culture if a dialect disappears. Anyway, if the artist had written the poem in dialect, it should be taught this way. Even to exchange students.

@Gerd: they can't and shouldn't change what all others need to do/learn, and a single lesson for exchange students (who most often probably won't be graded anyway for a "visit" to school for few months only) is no reason for the ministry (Gerd, you don't like them?) to change the plan/curriculum for everybody. the subject "german" in higher grades is not intended to teach german vocab and grammar, or to replace external language courses and teach "german for foreigners". BUT of course it would be up to the teacher to select a suitable poem if more than one in different or no dialects are available, or add another one himself, IF he got enough time to prepare: it was her first day and maybe the teacher only got very short or no notice in advance, and probably had no idea about her abilities and previous studies of german.

She is attending a regular class in a regular school, aimed at native German speaking students, not a class for German for non-Germans.
