I'm from Havana living in the Netherlands. I came across your video and wanted to wish you a very good holiday there. A few tips: 1. This is the most important. We Cubans are very, very friendly, but beware when someone reach out to you in the streets with no reason. They usually are looking for getting money out of you or worst. If you want to talk with the locals, you can reach to anyone in the street and make genuine conversation, specially with the youth. 2. Always prefer Bnb appartments to the State run Hotels, if you want a more real and memorable Cuban experience. And you are also helping out the business owners. 3. Few places to visit: - "Fabrica de Arte" is a good spot. - "Hotel Nacional" has a very nice patio with spectacular views of the City Skyline. You don't need to be a guest. - Make a nigth walk at "La Rampa" - "Saltzucar" and "Pacha" are some of the best night clubs (which we Cuban also call bars), and If you want something more relaxed, you can visit "Pasillo" or "Espacios", more like sit and drink bars. - There is a lot of good restaurants, like "Mar Adentro", "Skyline" (this one is also a night club) and "Rio Mar" (Incredible views at night). - Don't forget to visit Havana's University and make sure you talk with random students. They can also give some extra tips on activities. Other popular landmarks are "La Catedral", "Parque Central" and "Morro - Cabaña", but Havana is full of them. - As for the beach, you can go to "Tropicoco" which is only 30 min (25km) from the city center and it's almost as good as Varadero. Wanna get deeper into the country to see natural landscapes? Then you have to visit "Viñales", "Cienaga de Zapata" and my favorite "Topes de Collantes" (this one is near Trinidad) and very far from Havana, so take that into account. You can request rides with "Bajanda" a Cuban version of Uber that is actually really good, you can pay with cash. Cuban pesos. Informal exchange rates are around 1USD = 90 CUP right now. but don't exchange money with strangers. I hope these tips are of help and wish a very good stay in my motherland, Cuba.

In the US, we pretty much live to work, make money and pay bills vs Sly’s videos make him appear to enjoy his life traveling. We’re all looking for balance. Most people don’t care about making billions of dollars. They just want to make enough to enjoy life and have time to enjoy it doing the things they like.

The struggle is real for locals. As a vacation spot not sure, as an experience ...👍 a travel to the past. Have heard of people renting a room from a Cuban family or eating at a Cuban home its a way of saving and helping out locals.

Best to arrive with euros and exchange at the airport. Very friendly and humble people but you have to be aware of their struggles. Carry small change to pay so you don't have to think about getting change back. Get a good local guide to show you around. It will save you time and money. I hope to go there again soon. That breakfast was expensive at $22 US. Find those $1 daiquiri and Cohiba cigars ... 🍻

I'm from Havana. Better to exchange with someone at the street, your host being your safest bet. The exchange rate in the streets is at 100 x 1, so your host will be more than happy to sell CUP to you at 90 or 95 to 1.

@@atscub I was traveling with euros at the time I was there. So it was convenient for me at the airport. Thanks for the information. Have things changed much in the old city Havana? I was there just before the covid pandemic. The streets where full with people and live music everywhere. I had a great time and looking forward to visiting again. It was very sad to see the people struggle and tried to help in whatever way I could.

@@7sonero7 Things have changed and you can also do exchange your euros in the streets at even better price. Sadly, the pandemics hit hard on the already bad economy and we are so much worse now, because a huge chunk of Cuban economy depends on tourism and that a great weakness. The government recently allowed small and medium sized private enterprises to exist, but with a all sort of absurd regulations that make them very difficult to succeed. On top of that deteriorated infrastructure is falling apart all at once. Very difficult times for a lot of reasons, but I hope things will start getting better once tourism start flowing back again and some private enterprises start producing significantly. But for now they are having very hard times back there.

I was born in Cuba in 1966 . After the Castro Regime my family and I left Cuba in 1967. I really appreciate you sharing your video. You make it sound so easy to travel there and locate but the truth is that you as an American can come to Cuba an explore our island and culture and then get on a plane and fly back to the United State . The people in Cuba don’t have that luxury. This is a communist Island . The freedom that we know of in America is not honorer here. Cubans in Cuba cannot travel out of Cuba without permission of their government. The long lines you mentioned is a everyday struggle for all Cubans there . There’s no stocked grocery stores , there’s very little food . Sometimes a pound of rice has to last you an entire month and it makes it impossible when you have a family to feed. Wifi ( what a joke ) there are certain locations outside in designated areas where you have to stand in the heat just to make a phone call to a loved one In another country . The poor man saying his grandfather lives in Colorado yet he’s not allowed to go spend a month in Colorado with family because he’s controlled by a dictator! Yes tourist are treated differently of course because the government wants your money and wants you to do exactly what you just did . Show the world how great of a place this is when in fact it’s not. Our island has been destroyed of the history and architectural beauty it once was . These people don’t understand what the word freedom actually means yet us Cubans are the most loving , caring and selfless people you will ever meet . So if you heart tells you to make a difference in this world it’s time to step up to the plate and become the humanitarian that God expects of us . This is not about race, color or religion. This is about humanity and to think of them as one . We need Freedom for Cuba, we need the truth to be spoken cause none of these Cubans living in Cuba deserve to live in poverty but unfortunately every single one of them do . There hasn’t been any administration that have truly stood up for humanity when it comes to Cuba and it’s Regime. US doesn’t trade with Cuba . All I’m saying that if your not Cuban and travel to Cuba as a tourist you are only allowed to go to designated tourist areas where of course, your not going to think the struggles that are happening.. The Cuban that live in Cuba are forbidden to saying anything about their government or they will be in serious trouble life wise. So please if you do decide to tour Cuba pls help the people their . The US still sends produce to Cuba and poultry,,, however the government does not sell it or give it as they claim to the citizens unless they have a foreign coin in a debit card they will not take the Cuban currency… furthermore more There is even a Hershey factory that produces milk but they don’t supply the Cuban people…. I was there the entire month of April. I have never found a taxi to not take USD. I have been there eight times since 2018. Euros are good but any exchange at a government agency is 24 pesos to one USD. Restaurants gave 70 pesos of value to one dollar. The streets gave at least 100 to one.

I brought Mexican pesos to Cuba and exchanged them for the local currency. They will skim 10% off of American dollars, but only 3% off of pesos.

I’ve been to Cuba and wish the Cuban people greater prosperity in the future.

I love that Sly is quick to learn how things work in all of the places he visits... I can assure you that there will be no more $22 meals and he'll learn how to get those internet cards cheaper and quicker... there will be a tradeoff though but I won't spoil it for you... keep the good content Sly!!!

Actually there is no food to eat in Cuba. Rice,bread and beans from government run food depositories. That’s it. Cubans are malnourished, along with very poor dental and medical care. That’s socialism.

This is going to be a very interesting trip for me I was in Havana Cuba for 30 days in 2017. I found Havana Cuba awesome beautiful and confusing all at the same time. I'm from Ireland and visited Cuba, they're so friendly. Everyone coming up to us asking where we were from, granted most of them were looking for money and to come into their facilities but still very friendly

550 CUP ARE AROUND $5 US DOLLARS , BRO YOU NEED TO GET WITH THE LOCALS , the price of the US dollar in the informal market has skyrocketed. You can sell one US dollar in the informal market for as much as 100 CUPs, which is four times the official USD-to-CUP exchange rate (1 USD = 25 CUPs). JUST BE CAREFUL WALKING UNDER THOSE BULDING IN OLD HAVANA....

That guy getting you into his bar is a classic Cuban con. They’ll then charge you a high price for the drinks.

Let us know what the exchange rate is on the black market. Do not exchange using the official market - nobody does as it is a complete rip off as can be seen by what you paid for a plate of veges. Also, people are friendly, but the 'where you from' people watch out for.

Those buildings you can tell were once beautiful. The infrastructure is falling apart. Wish them lots of luck!

I am always surprised that people do not do their homework before visiting a place. Your problem, sort of, with the money exchange, then not knowing where you are going. Cuba has been using the MLC card or cold hard cash for some time. There is a black market money exchange. You could have downloaded street maps of Havana. You seem ripe to get fleeced. Good luck.

Right now, $1US is equivalent to 100 to 110 Moneda Nacional in the black market. In the airport and in the hotels is only 24 MN. You’re going to loose a lot of money and will find everything expensive if you are going to exchange your US$ in the airport, banks, or hotels.

@@mrkdvs13 , some of the hotel staff like the security people will offer to exchange your money. They may offer you 60 to 70 exchange rate, still better than the hotel desk, airport, or bank rates of 25 to 30. But if you want the max rate of 100 to 110, you just have to find it on the streets.

“I’m a student,” is the best way to say, “please don’t try to hustle me.” Watch out for the jineteros. I watched until end… did you pay $22 for that? When I used to travel to Cuba, they had something called LaCaja (The box) for 10 pesos which was 50 cents. It was creole food. The street pizza was 10 pesos too. All delicious and cheap.

As of today, 25 July 2022, there are more the one thousand political prisoners in Cuba, mostly young people including minors, with sentences up to 25 years of prison. And on July 2nd 2022 the Cuban Revolutionary Police assasinated Zidan, a 17 years young black Cuban, the 4th afro Cuban assasinated by the police in 2 years. Keep this in mind: your holiday paradise is hell for Cubans. Your sun and beaches are Cubans' prisons and blood.

Wow! Your one day reminds me of my entire two weeks in Cuba. There is so much beauty and culture there. The highlight of the trip was the Afro-Cuban Religion Tour! Loved it! However, its the only country out of the 20+ that I've visited where I felt like it was a job every day. Where am I gonna find food? What store will have water (I walked for over an hour just looking for water). Long lines everywhere, paying for kindness etc. If anything it was a social studies lesson. I learned a lot about Cuban religion, Afro-Cuban history, Cuban music (especially Hip Hop), Cuban Salsa, and my global privilege. It was an amazing and exhausting trip.

Now you know how cubans lives every single day. Struggling to get food, queueing for hours in a shop to buy a few pieces of chicken and probably after managed to enter the chicken is gone! And you have to wait till the following day or maybe weeks to do all over again.

Groceries, I had to laugh. Eat out is the only option. When we were there in 2018 it was still crazy to go to a small grocery store with maybe ten items in the store. Now all stores have hours of lines. Twice we went to a gas station and they had run out of gas. So sad right now that most of the friends and musicians I met there, are in the US or Europe working. Some have left completely. LOve the Cuban people though, some of the friendliest you'll meet in the world!

Cuba and it's people are so beautiful one day I'd like to visit but not right now when they are having such a difficult time with shortages on everything like there is no meat to be served with your lunch or dinner ninty percent of the time right now, as one can view for themselves that 's reality as even this blogger was filming his lunch his plate had no meat on it. Also, seen on another blog space that citizens were traveling to other places in Latin America just to bring back must needed medicines because the pharmacy shelves are empty and even over the counter things like Ibuprofen not even does the hospital have Ibuprofen or aspirin to give it's patients. It's sad but they are strong independent people who will overcome come these kind of issues and problems.

Cuba only has 1 currency at the moment which is pesos. You can still bring US dollars and with the right connection is 115 pesos for a dollar right now. The government agencies would not trade or exchange it.

I'm going back to Cuba next week for the first time in 2 years since the pandemic hit. The main obstacle that I may have will be what money will I need to take. I'm hearing from my Cuban friends in Cuba that Euros is the best bet if I'm coming from Colombia. I heard from a close friend who used to go to Cuba a lot also said that Cuba is in bad shape the worst that he's ever seen it. So I'm not staying there long I'll be there four nights 5 days

You can go through Mexico, Bahamas or any other third country but returning to US could be a problem. My ex used to have 2 US passports and never got caught but it was much easier after we got married. Just paid for a family visa.

There’s an additional form required beforehand that you designate as your reason for travel + visa you can purchase at the airport. There are restrictions while staying there as far a housing (just stay at an Airbnb). People come and go regularly from the US “not as tourist”.

it is like a with code that you enter into your wifi device, it is good for 1 hr, and cost 1 CUC if you line up at official store, or can be bought off the street for 2 CUC. And it can only be used where WiFi device is located, usually at the Park or Big Hotel.

Life changing experiences! I took my son there in '19 for educational purposes.

-I'm a student and you could've probably just bought a sim card and bought a mobile data plan instead, it would've saved you the hassle of looking for an internet park. - the card thing is due to covid, it's a way to boost economy through earning foreign currency.

Thank the U.S. for the condition of Havana. The U.S. Embargo against Cuba makes it difficult for them to prosper. The U.S. has destroyed their economy and has done so for the past 60 years.

@@cubanenglish I did but I have family in Cuba in different parts of the country unfortunately the Cuban government denied my uncle the visa when my mother tried to get him out

Lol funny watching this video cuz makes me feel like he didn’t do his homework on Cuba. There are no American products there like Welch’s or nutri grain bar. Their literally isolated from world. The internet card I used it was a man selling them in park. But it’s definitely surreal going to Cuba the ppl are awesome and friendly but just to think their so close to Miami but so faraway from America I can’t wait to go back hopefully next year

That's what I thought too, in regards to him thinking he can walk into a grocery store there & just pick up Nutri-Grain bars & fruit roll-ups! They have empty shelves!!

Hey there, thanks so much for sharing this video. I keep watching and reading that currently there's a super supply shortage, and it's very hard to find bottled water. We're planning to go in November :) Is it super bad? Or is it just excitingly challenging :)

Be careful because they charged you DOUBLE the price at $22. . I’ve been to Cuba and I have family there. They try sometimes to overcharge me to. I don’t mind paying a lil extra but charging double is wrong

@@Carlos-nq7up ever since the Spanish conquered the island. The history of Cuba has been a tragedy. The first concentration camps in America were built in Cuba by Valeriano Wayler. It's the reason I say that Cuba is cursed.

Maybe it’s mentioned somewhere else, but since tourism is not allowed for US citizens in Cuba i am curious exactly what type of VISA you got to get into the country, and what your experience was going through customs in the Havana airport. I was there in May and pulled out of line and grilled as to why I was there. I could only get a tourist Visa but had to declare I was there to support the Cuban people only and grilled as to what I was doing to support the Cuban people even though I was renting an Airbnb and spending money in eateries, etc. I was also grilled about it back at customs in Ft Lauderdale.

I know Cuba is difficult for Americans to travel to. Do you use an American passport?
