Do you have any advice for dancers with thick hair? Because I have really thick hair but recently I've noticed some significant loss (still pretty thick but I'm still worried lol) probably due to the weight of my hair in tight ponytails and buns. I want to let my hair recover but I don't know how for buns. I've started tying my hair in low ponytails or just using scrunchies instead but I'm not sure if it's working so far

It helps to braid them from the top, like Dutch braids, and then put it into a bun so the tension will be distributed more evenly on your head and it won't pull as much :)

Oiling ends before and after washing helps reduce breakage of the ends so reduces loss there. Made a massive difference for me. If you are allowed to, using bun pins/U pins instead of elastics are far more secure and cause far less breakage further up. I’ve never had one fall out. But I did switch to shampoo bars and conditioner bars and stopped using the regular commercial liquid ones so perhaps my hair is not quite so slippery. Because I don’t have to pull so tightly to get it to stay in it reduces the traction alopecia.

And as the previous poster Mao said, a variety of braids, changing the, over different days, that you can pin into as a foundation also makes a big difference. It allows the scalp to rest and redistributes the tension.

a lot of professionals prefer it that way. some find it more comfortable, easier to use the restroom in, or maybe they just want to move away from their student years
