I feel the same! I’m grabbing my sketchbook right now! And I also feel the same about digital sketching, there’s lots of perks to being able to undo and resize etc. but dang does looking at the screen for long make me go crosse-eyed!

The thing with designing for garnments is... You design in RGB but they either print in CMYK or use Pantone colors. If you want the brightest colors, you have to choose from a physical Pantone book so they can mix the paint to match exactly that color (if they do screen printing or decal printing using screens). If they print in CMYK (they use DTF: direct to film or DTG: direct to garnment printers, it's not screen printing) the vibrant colors will become more dull, since there's much less colors in CMYK than there's in RGB. Screen printing is a little bit complicated if you don't have the right people doing it. I prepare graphics and designs for screen printing, transfer decals and DTF printing. I always consult with my co-workers about how to prepare all the files and films for each technique. Certain colors (usually the light ones, also depends on the color of the garnment) need the white base layer, some they just do 2 coats of. They usually know which one to do after seeing the textile it's going on. It's a little complicated, I could never learn it even though I've been doing this for 5 years now.

I love watching your videos but this one has been my favorite! I design shirts for screen printing so it is so cool to watch someone else's approach. Your designs came out so cute! People don't understand how hard it is to translate art to merchandise design but I think you did a great job! I gotta go grab some of that merch now!

I can totally relate to the whole 'warming up to your owm artwork' I have never created anything physical but done some digital artwork for friends and it took me time to actually like them even though my friends were happy, congrats on your collab and the dog sniffing the flowers is my favorite so cute! 🩷💚

I relate to the not liking your own art at first thing. I make ceramics so a little bit different but I usually HATE everything I make immediately out of the kiln and want to get rid of it all right away lol. But then I keep it around my house and it grows on me.

i think they turned out really cute leigh!! I agree I prefer the butter yellow vs the pink but the thermos looks really nice IMO. It's weird that the printer wouldn't have said anything regarding the colors looking different on the darker background shirt before you designed them - agree that the cream shirts' design pops more. Loved seeing this process!

I do the same thing as a digital artist. I'm so used to just making flat artwork and now I'm trying to expand for print on demand and I'd much rather just go with the visuals atm🙃 let the ideas flow

Sooo inspiring, Leigh ! I love how the cream shirt turns out :D As a graphic designer dealing often with merch and printed projects, I totally relay on the "no no no" reaction when seeing a final project for real. I would have love to purchase one of these cream shirts, but sadly there's no shipping to France or Europe. It will be for another project :)

This is great! I actually design tshirts as my day job, and I know you said earlier in the video you wanted to work on sketches and then apply them to the products but I often feel like that’s harder. You run into the dark tshirt ground problem. I often find it easier to draw on a dark background first, I find animals can often look just strange or kind of evil once they are inverted from black lines to white.

It’s a learning curve! Also the “flash of white” they do to make the colours more vibrant usually has to be requested with the printer. My guess is they were using eco friendly water based ink, which is a good thing! But tough on dark colour tshirts.

Now I just want to draw so many dogs... who am I kidding I draw a lot of dogs anyways haha. They are all cute designs and I wish I could've bought all of them. I still love the 1st flower doggie on the green shirt best! I bought one of the shirts as well! Can't wait to get it! Maybe one day I can visit this lovely coffee shop too! ALSO question: if you don't mind me asking, how did you negotiate your cut of the merchandise? Did you end up taking a percentage of sale or did you do something like a buyout or flat rate on the designs? I'm really curious because I want to get to this level where I can design my own merchandise as well as work with other artists and small businesses I adore! Do you have any other advice in regards to this type of collaboration? Love ya Leigh! Always inspiring. Good to have you back on YT!

Hi! I took a flat rate for this collaboration and free matcha for life haha! I don’t know how much is appropriate to charge but I know other artists who work with clients like furry little peach and Frannerd talk about pricing on their channels!

@@LeighEllexson thank you Leigh! I have watched and looked around to find the answer myself and I saw you mentioned the Gouache brushes a couple of times but i didn’t expect this one to be a Gouache brush too ~

LEIGH- QUICK Q: I know you didn't handle the manufacturing but did you run into a problem with transferring the file format in procreate when sending over designs? i just designed bandanas for my friend's coffee cart, and I only used Procreate and it was a mess for the printers. Seems like the screen printers we worked with wanting more Adobe Illustrator stuff but just curious if that came up for you.
