Welcome to this random video. As you can see, I am playing an epic bass guitar, which is called the Sadowsky MetroExpress 21-fret Hybrid PJ 5-string Bass - Olympic White. This guitar usually goes for like $1,100+, though the good ole 4th of July sale kicked in and helped me find one for one $819! I sold my Ibanez since the pickups were just bad and it hurt my hands no matter the setup, so that helped free up some space in my room for the Sadowsky.
I zoomed over to Guitar Center right after work today to pick it up, and they said that it was in amazing condition despite it being shipped from the factory. I received some pointers from the employees (specifically, a guy who calls himself Toast since he is a metal vocalist and drummer; bro crafted up some disgustingly insane tones so thank you my friend for helping me) and got to playing. It seems like the strings are new, along with some pearly frets that feel slick. I don't think I will be changing these strings anytime soon (literally $26 for a 130-45 string gauge pack bruv) so there's that. It will be a new learning process since I have never changed bass strings before. Even so, gotta learn at some point!
Before making the purchase, I tried out some 5 string bass guitars with similar neck lengths just to make sure this was it. Honestly, I am not sure if it really is the one for me, though that is also what I said with my Telecaster and now it is the only guitar I play lmfao. If anything, I just need to get used to the wide neck and frets. I find that my fingers get caught a lot when I am sliding between frets due to both the strength needed to slide fluently, along with the lapse in judgement for how far the frets are from each other. Even so, I love the punch that this bass provides, especially in active mode, along with how easily it is to create a rig. I don't have nearly as many effects on for these tones compared to my guitar tones, so that is nice.
This guitar also has some neat tone shaping knobs that I can mess with which adjust bass, treble, and mids (I think the last two are a modded feature on this bass since I have not seen them on the other models) so that will take some time to get familiar with. It also has those cool hybrid PJ pickups, which I can use to either blend my sound to hear a jazz + precision bass or choose to hear strictly a jazz or precision bass. I got this bass since Shunsuke Matsumoto (Co Shu Nie's bassist) uses it, and his tone is just killer + his basslines are just jazz ( / how_does_one_come_up_w... sick read into how to write said basslines). I also read that jazz basses are most widely used in Jrock due to their thickness, so getting a jazz bass was on my mind anyways since I absolutely love the sound of Japanese basslines (both tonally and harmonically).
To note, I am struggling with keeping open strings muted when I move to other strings, playing with little tension on frets below the 7th ish fret, and getting used to how far I need to move my pick to pick the next string. This is literally my first day with it, so some practice will indeed get me more familiar. I had been practicing Bad Timing's bassline whenever I was in a Guitar Center, so some extra metronome and string muting work was needed to play it here. Reading my music also helped me not lose my sightreading skills (really on rhythms) since I had been slacking on that for a bit (useful for choir since I don't want to be the one who falls behind!). I will eventually learn plucking and slap (Bad Timing's bassline is literally a slap line lmao) though that will come with time too. Lastly, it can be hard to mix the active pickups tone with already wet guitars (will hear later in the video) so that will be fun to figure out.
I had already written many basslines for my songs, so it is really satisfying learning some of those basslines and putting it all together. I just need to figure out a way to import my vocals into Reaper so that I can mix everything there, since being limited to Garageband's 3 band EQ sucks tbh.
Anyways, sick bass, thank you Toast for giving me the mixing and bass pointers, and thank you Matsumoto-san for literally existing. See you in the next one 👋

People make fun of using a pick with bass, but I personally think it sounds way cooler. I really like the tone that it gives. Keep it up! 👊

I agree! I would like to learn how to pluck + slap, though I think for the most part I will play with a pick. The percussive character it adds to the tone is really delightful, and I think it fits well for the type of stuff I play. Thanks for stopping by!

For sure! You've got a sick channel. Yea, my little bro got a bass so I've been messing around with it. Slapping is definitely a lot harder with it because it's got cheaper pickups, but it's a ton of fun to mess around with.

@@HyperspaceStudios Thanks! Yea this is just a person channel, so I upload whenever I feel like it. It is especially useful for journaling when I need to since life do be like that. Cool to know you are a slapper though. It sounds super cool in the stuff I have listened to, especially in Japanese basslines

Ah, I heard that would be a problem. My finger nails are also kinda long since I’m still working on finger style pieces, so it seems like the good ole pick will suffice. I am using the same pick I use for my guitar, which is a Jazz III. I find that pretty comfortable to use, despite it being a rather small pick. I think anything nylon or stiffer pick material will work for bass playing. Definitely find a way to play some bass because bass is fun alongside guitar!
