My favourite lens for the Nikon Zf

Ойын-сауық

The manual and analogue nature of the Nikon Zf perfectly suits a lens like the new Thypoch Simera 28mm. But how does it perform in combination? Does it hold up on the street? I tested it thoroughly, and present my thoughts here!

Note: I mentioned that the demo unit has a silver front ring, as opposed to production units. I received word from a Thypoch rep that production units would also have a silver ring. A lot of images online show a full-black lens, and I had initially received conflicting information! So, it's probably best to check with your preferred place of purchase for confirmation.

I'm very disappointed that they are losing the option of the full black version of the Simera 28mm. I was going to buy one but what is it with these lens companies that insist on putting the silver ring on the front. One reason I dislike some of my Voigtlanders. Oh well, I'm hoping they reverse their decision and release the full black versions again. If not, I'll just have to put a filter in front of it to hide as much as I can the silver ring.

I recently got the K&F Concept m39 screw mount adaptor for the Zf so lookforward to trying out my Canon 50mm f1.4 LTM (Canon Summilux) and Jupiter 8 lenses on it versus my Nikkor 40mm f2. I've been waiting for this 28mm and the new Voigtlander 28mm 1.5... I've got the voigtlander in route to me now... Curious to see how the two compare to one another... Assuming the voigtlander is of quality to other voigtander lenses, I may stick with it instead of trying to Typoch... I like that the voigtlander appears (on paper at least) noticebly lighter and smaller as well as has a focus tab... we shall see... appreciate the review here! It's great there are more and more third party options for M mount shooters... really helps in building out a nice kit with different focal lengths

Nice pictures with the ZF. I received my 35mm last Wednesday and tested it on my M2, Sony a6700 and tried to mount it to my Panasonic GX9 but that didn’t work. The element sticking out of the back of the lens doesn’t allow to fix it on the GX9 with an adapter. The results with the M2 are very nice (lomography lady grey). I have the feeling that infinity isn’t exactly at the infinity mark. On the Sony the lens is hard to focus exactly. Probably I need to practice more with it. On the silver M6 the silver lens looks absolutely great… Have a nice day.

This guy shares an interesting solution in this video. He caps auto iso at 200 then the ISO dial functions to increase the cap. So setting the iso dial to 400 lets the iso float between 100-400 for example. Setting the dial to 100-200 won’t make a difference since that is within the set range. It’s not the perfect solution since it’s still in auto but gives you easy and fast control over the auto iso settings. kzread.info/dash/bejne/o2h9ttWoZa7YpJs.htmlsi=5pWlAKATkB07rYl8

Learn how it works. It’s the same as other Nikon bodies. Not sure why people want to have this changed, there’s no need. It’s a multi-function control, not merely there for auto/manual iso switching. To avoid having to dive into the menus, simply configure the ‘record’ button as an iso button, and use the sub-command dial, when the top iso wheel is in ‘c’, to switch iso between auto and manual.

Thanks for this review. This lens has a soft-nostalgic character, some people will find it attractive, especially on Leica cameras. You got really nice photos with it. My experience with cheaper Chinese lenses is not very good. There are foolish design flaws like the uneven aperture scale that make you understand that these are not accurate instruments as they should be. Calibration problems may also occur. I use an analog M, a digital M, and have added the Zf. The Zf handles manual focus lenses beautifully! The best part is when you have face and eye recognition on and can “punch and zoom” directly to the focus point. With coded lenses like the Nikon Z mount lenses (yes, we all wish they had aperture rings) or the Voigtlander 28mm f mount lens, you can get focus confirmation features using manual focus as well. I too find it a little quirky to alternate with the tech art between auto and manual focus, with the edge always leaning towards the autofocus method. But it is a great adapter. Maybe I will get a second adapter for manual focus only…

I can say I quite enjoyed it, overall. The big thing that bugs me is the placement of the "magnify" buttons on the Zf. Perhaps it could be set to something more convenient. Unfortunately a lot of the cool Nikon Zf manual focusing aids won't work with adapted Leica M lenses because they don't have elecrical contacts that for example the Voigtlander Nikon Z have - like for example the very nice "focus confirmation" that changes the color of the focus point to green if you focus correctly. Hope Nikon will release a firmware update to make that feature available also for manual focus lenses without electrical contacts. Maybe I should check out the Techart adapter.

I’m sure you’re aware by now, but that’s not a focus tab it’s a focus lock, similar to the ones on LTM lenses. And the DOF mechanism was taken from Alpa Kern lens.

Not a single mention of the fact that this lens, like all m-mount lenses are designed to be used on Leica cameras that have a much thinner sensor stack than other mirrorless cameras and that adapting it to e-mount or a-mount will result in sub-optimal optical performance. The midzone dip and abysmal edge sharpness due to induced field curvature means that on Sony and Nikon bodies you will need to stop the lens down past f/5.6 to reach acceptable sharpness across the frame. The 7Artisans 28mm f/1.4 FE+ is a better option for Sony shooters that want to adapt an m-mount lens but most people, including Nikon shooters would be better off just buying the native mount Laowa and Viltrox options.

I think if a video title is "My favorite lens for Nikon ZF" is only reviewing the one lens and not comparing it to another one, two or three similar products, then you become an influencer. People read the title and think "Oh, this is the best lens of all time, I'm gonna rush out and get it". Frankly, the images didn't blow up my skirt so to speak. I think its good but the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 is best, followed by Voightlander 35mm 1.2. Chromatic Aberrations are in lenses by design as it gives an image DEPTH or dimensionality. They're even putting in lens aberrations to video games to give the gamers a more cinematic experience, and I've seen CA's switched on and off in video games and the CA's on creates more depth and ambience to the video footage, but takes away a small amount of sharpness. Lens flares, lens bloom, anamorphic flares and CA's have made their way into video game production and even CGI video/movie footage. Just as a 3D movie at the cinema requires the viewers to wear 3D glasses that are separate red and blue lenses, that same effect is done down a single lens resulting in more depth, but the consequence of purple fringing (Red + Blue = purple) on high contrast edges. But nowadays most professional photographers do not want to see purple fringing because they have no clue why they are there, and demand lenses without purple fringing, so lenses are now clinically sharp and produce sterile images that lack ambience or that cinematic feel. So now y'all have to buy mist filters to simulate lens aberrations like bloom that take away sharpness and contrast to make images look more cinematic.
