Watercolor, plus, I like the Caran D'Ache Technalo graphite watercolor pencils. They are great for drawing and getting a little added dimension shading with a wet brush.

Lately I've been interested in more loose impressionistic style drawing. So I've been exploring minimal sketching with light color pencil & going with either watercolors, or ink washes on top. Trying to keep to larger (size 10) brushes & be very intentional about details. Using a fountain pen has helped speed up the process when drawing outside. Love my R&K Sketch Ink (Thea color) as its dries to a very warm grey and doesn't stand out too much. Also started using the Faber Castel Matte series pencils and enjoy that they don't have that shine that normal graphite pencils have. Plus learned to book bind over the pandemic, so now I exclusively make my own hardcover sketchbooks to the size, paper quality, and brand of my liking. It's helped me to keep a regular sketchbook drawing habit. Thanks for sharing all your materials. Will look into the Princeton Aqua Elite brushes.

I love mechanical pencils too, but I prefer .7mm leads over .5. They’re a bit harder to find here in Australia, but I feel really clumsy when I use .5mm for some reason. If you want a fountain pen that won’t ever dry out, I highly recommend the ones by Platinum. The platinum preppy was my first fountain pen, and I lost it. I found it 2 years later and it still wrote perfectly (no dried ink or anything). I know Noodler’s make some inks that are lightfast+waterproof etc. that have a good reputation, but I haven’t tried them yet. I love their Southwest Sunset (formerly Apache Sunset) ink though, it’s my favourite! I have been meaning to get the Kaweco Perkeo too, so I’m glad to hear you like it!

My favorite medium changes so often, it's hard to pick just one. In 2023, what I have enjoyed the most is making papercuts from thin brown paper bags from my bakery. After cutting, I dip them in golden amber shellac. It gives them extra strength and a rich color. I use acrylic matte medium to glue them into my sketchbooks. I love making loose sketches with colored inks and a bamboo reed pen. My favorite brands for water soluble inks are Herbin and Robert Oster. I use DeAtramentis Document ink (black) in my fountain pen for pen and watercolor sketches. It is waterproof, so you can paint over it after it is dry. I agree with you about Derwent Drawing pencils and Derwent Lightfast pencils. Thanks for the color suggestions.

I’ve bought some handmade watercolour paint over the years. This year two new handmade watercolours small buisnesses I’ve bought from are: Beam paints, an indigenous woman owned company in Canada. Stoneground paints, also from Canada. The Beam paints are packaged plastic free. The two most original colours from Beam are Wild Salmon and Wet Grizzly. They’re both iridescent, have a special reflective texture that is amazing!

Your color combinations are my favorites as well, plus, I love ❤ watercolors and wish I had the variety you have collected. Yes, I also have the Derwent Drawing pencil set and they are so beautiful I enjoy them every time I take them out to sketch or use in multi media. Also, I use both mechanical and lead pencils depending on the paper quality since I usually don't want to engrave/indent as I work. Keep up the great work you're doing. It depends on what I am drawing if I use a mechanical or wood pencil. For rough sketches or for painting over, oh, and for when I plein air, I use mechanical pencils. My mechanical pencils have both refillable lead and erasers, which make them perfect for field work. But sometimes, I like to just make a graphite drawing, and then I'll use wood pencils. If I am doing that in the field, I'll take my Blackwing because it is the most versatile wood pencil out there. Currently, even though I love watercolor so much, I am using mostly gouache and learning to use oil pastels. A neck injury makes it impossible for me to do anything that isnt completely vertical right now. I have a lot of acrylic paints, but I always make such a mess with those, so gouache it is!

My current favorite medium is just pencils and inks. After discovering how much I like mechanical pencils for my work I rarely use the normal ones anymore. What fountain pen do you suggest for manual refilling? I bought an ink pot but I was struggling finding a pen that isn't a cartridge based one.

  • @lightwavz

You can find ink converters for most brands and styles of pens. And you can syringe-fill your used cartridges with your favorite drawing inks as well. There are lots of videos with how-to on both. Try very small cake decorating pastry syringes or tiny pipettes to refill your current cartridges. I have a messy path to my favorite method, but experimenting is half the fun of using your supplies, right? 😅
