Probably something to do with the really wonky way making quests work in the Gamebryo engine went. It was probably easier to make a lot of stuff just dialogue triggers and not tied to quest flags.

Obsidian designed the game linearly, and it shows. Sergeant McGee and Lieutenant Hayes in Primm both give you a pop-up message if they die, for example. There’s just so many differences in how the early game is designed and how the late game is.

I mean, the point of that is to build up the legion encounter and to warn the NCR about the Legion's invasion. Sadly it leads nowhere because you can't take back nipton with the help of mojave outpost, nor is it a surprise to anyone but Ghost that there's Legion this far west.

it's assumed that world time moves with the player level, due to the fact that rangers and legionnaires become more powerful veterans and this is commented on as "the elites have finally arrived" or something to that effect. taking it from that frame id say that ghost being the only one to comment about legion being that far west makes sense; after all, by the time you breeze through nipton and into novac, the NCR will have had time to radio it in and everyone knows that they're facing down a larger front than they thought. the only frame that i think it doesn't make sense is if you've already been to new vegas and mccarren and then do the quest, but a player is very unlikely to do that on any given run. overall it's somewhat subjective but there's a good case to be made that word simply got around while you were getting ratslayer and completing booted lol

3:53 For anyone else confused, Keller was a ranger working a sting. There is a quest path where you can convince him to work with Contreras to bust the drug ring, but apparently if you kill Keller right away it bugs out and you get the bit of dialogue intended for the former option.

Honestly that just makes it much more annoying. There’s so many moving parts that it’s hard to keep track if you’re away from the quest too long. Also the fact that the speech check is glitched makes it kinda sad. I will admit, that makes it way more fitting, don’t get a weapon, or kill a guy. decisions decisions

You don't have to go into the terminal mess hall. Just go straight ahead out the garage doors behind the front desk out onto the tarmac. Then to the exterior door of the shack at the other end. It's a more direct route and a little faster. Especially on console since the loading screen for the mess hall is fairly long and is also pretty crash prone. And the tarmac is part of the same cell you were already in.

This is one of the jankiest quests in new vegas. The wheels feel like they’re gonna fall off any moment.

They cut an entrance that would have made this quest much easier. I hate how far we have to walk to get to Contreras

I'm pretty sure there is a mod that restored the cut content. I have so much installed that I couldn't tell you which one; nexus has something like over 30,000 mods available. However, if you're a console gamer, then I feel for you.

At least you can avoid loading screens on newer hardware. Playing New Vegas on Xbox 360 was horrible. I played the release build, so it was even worse. Loading screens would loop for over a half hour, I still save before entering any zone in video games because of this.

Contreas has a massive stock of ammo though, very helpful to keep around.

Good stuff! Nice to see how the quest looks when you actually work for Contreras. In my past playthroughs I always just did the alternate quest path where you simply hack Contreras's terminal, get the info on it then report him to Lieutenant Boyd so she rewards you with This Machine right away. Yeah it nerfs Contreras's vendor stock but you still have the Hoover Dam and Great Khans's quartermasters for ammo restock anyway.

"This Machine", I wonder if that's a Woody Guthrie reference.

I think the reason why it isnt a big quest is because Obsidian didnt had much time, like yes the quest did made it into the game but wasnt worked on it till the end, just like the cut content with the raiders and other stuff

oh wow, didnt know you could get This Machine that way, if i knew you could do a cool quest for it I wouldnt just hand him over to boyd every playthrough

This Machine is such an awesome gun.

I couldn't even start this quest last playthrough because Isaac got gunned down by fiends the minute I laid eyes on him.

The M1 is such a good weapon, it really helped me with Killing Deathclaws

I just did this a few days ago when finishing the hardcore run. That’s crazy.

I love this quest but theres a bug on 360 where his inventory doesnt update after you get this machine. Extremely frustrating.

I really think unmarked quests should do a comeback.

He would remind me where to go before telling me in the first place and then I waited a day and he still said I needed to wait a day but then I just picked the same dialogue option again without ending the conversation and then it worked for some reason. Also after going back and convincing the NCR cop to work with Contreras he just told me "That's good to hear" lol. Seems really incomplete so that is probably why unmarked

I always snitched Contreras after seeing his drug deal, take his data and report him to Boyd. I still get This Machine.

this is exactly what happened to me. I didnt sneak though when I killed him, so the second he died I lost reputation with the NCR. Thats how I found out who he was.

my favorite unmarked quest in New Vegas is to release Isaac from his eternal imprisonment in his house after the first meeting

I've seen Isaac get killed by the fiends that spawn nearby at night. He's kind of squishy.

If you wanna avoid all that extra work, you can just hack into his computer, “read” the evidence, and go to sgt. Boyd and snitch on him.. then bam, this machine is all yours! Of course you lose him as a merchant and such, but he doesn’t offer anything interesting and it’s pain to go all the back of airport over and over 😅

I have more hours in this game than anyone, and here I am, still finding “The Machine” that I have never obtained. WOW.

For anyone who does not want to help Contreras and reports him for ez xp plus ncr rep for safehouse, buy guns from Knight Torres (she sells equipment at low durability or close to max durability), repair the guns from torres and sell to wherever(Commissary in lonesome road replenishes caps instantly after going below 600 caps or something, Crimson Caravan Blake has a lot of money approx. 12000 caps on reset, next comes gun runners 8000 caps on reset). Buy ammo from hoover dam (Khan armoury if legion route) or buy ammo in small chunks everytime you sell weapons to build up ammo until you get your preferred weapon

The main story is a complex political opera that mirrors our very own U.S. and global politics, even before those political conflicts came to be; The challenging of liberal democracies worldwide. To say nothing of flawless writting in countless other quests, and diaologue in general. Unmarked quests in new vegas>>>fallout 3 main quest

This dude has no muzzle discipline... everytime i talk with a NPC, i put my weapon away not only for for the Charisma/Speech penalty to go away, but because it is just common courtesy.

I was doing this quest last night, spoke to Keller and he told me to go talk to the guy buying and selling drugs in the NCR stock room but when I went back to him I can only ask where is Price again or what he is selling, no new option to try get him to work with the Rangers to avoid death.
