Another problem of voice protagonists. Its an RPG, the player should be deciding how apprehensive or how enthusiastic any line's read should be... forgive me for momentarily beating that dead horse again

@@chompythebeast Go play D&D and make your own character then. Cause with enough literacy you can intuit the tone behind every written videogame line. Unless your protagonist has completely alien mannerisms...

@@cautiouslycynical9786 Or just any previous (or even the one later) Fallout game, I guess. Attempting to intuit significantly different takes from the reads we get is less about "literacy" and more an exercise in just ignoring offending lines. It was an interesting experiment, but they didn't go all-in on the voiced protagonist bit and just left us with a railroaded MC whose character doesn't even really gel with player actions much of the time. Some people don't mind, especially perhaps series newcomers and those who like the action a _lot_ more than the role playing. I think they've learned their lesson tho and probably won't do it again. Again, dead horse, but Fallout 4 will never live it down because so much of what it gets especially right is held back by the weak story and baked-in characterization. Text responses are not only easier to produce but are much better at allowing greater narrative depth and freer interpretation. But I'm now just stating something most everyone already agrees on anyway, I think

  • @chompythebeast

@@cautiouslycynical9786 Also just saw Starfield has a non-voiced protagonist, so yeah, Bethesda learned their lesson on this one. Again, it helps that the same thing that makes for better, more interpretable, and more iteratable (in terms of development) storytelling is also simply _easier_ overall

In a lore perspective it could work (kind of similar to gage, but mixed with curie and her attempts to find data) but in practice lorenzo would have to be toned down like mad, or can only be kept as a follower for a limited time before he goes on cool down and returns to Cabot house

I remember when I first got this encounter. As I approached I was coming up the hill going towards the sunset drive in settlement. I came that way because I heard gunfire and thought the settlement was under attack. Instead I found Lorenzo fighting a group of super mutants, raiders, and even two random minutemen. I just stood there dumbfounded as he folded every single person with his psychic attacks. Then just stood there surrounded by almost twenty dead bodies. "Hello friend!" He says happily.

So, Vault Dwellers survived because they were underground. How did the Cabots make it through the day the sky cracked, on the surface? Sure, maybe their condition protected them from the radiation element, but conventional injury kills them; even Lorenzo, and if nothing else, its surprising he didn't get loose when the bombs went off, and they didn't damage the equipment that kept him confined.
