I have seen Generative Fill do a fantastic job on some images and not well at all on others. I have a recent shot of the total eclipse through clouds, which i had to crop; the eclipsed sun was in a corner of the frame. Tried to use Generative Fill to expand the surrounding dark-sky-with clouds background. Couldn't get to to work without an obvious border between the actual image and the generated portions. Tried at least ten times. On other photos, it does a fantastic job. YMMV.

Question: When you have used generative expand on an image as you showed - and there are some residual "issues" - how does using software such as Topaz Sharpen or Denoise work? Is that a usable tool following generative expand issues? Thanks so much and looking forward to "seeing" you next week during Lightroom Virtual Summit!!!

The one reason people MAY choose to use Content Aware fill versus Generative Fill is that one does not require the Internet (although I still suspect that Adobe was able to develop Content-aware fill using anonymous data from user usage/images to be honest, just as they are likely using the same data to train Generative Fill, and I think more recently, they have made this publicly known per their terms and conditions agreements/EULA.

Hello ✨Matt At 2:45 you say that generative fill won't work on high resolution images ? 5:23 "Generative fill will create low resolution areas…" What does it mean exactly ? Won't it be possible to work properly (for example in my case) with Sony's Alpha 7 IV images ?

Hi. Gen Fill does not create high resolution areas (I believe 1024 pixels is the max). So using it to fill an area that is 4000 pixels in size won’t look good unless it’s not a high detailed area like a blurry background or sky.

What are your thoughts on using the generative fill tool and having facebook tag it as AI generated?

I haven’t yet seen FB or IG tag a photo that used Gen Fill to fix an area as AI Generated. The purpose of that move is to prevent people from generating an AI image from scratch, not to alert people that used AI to remove a distraction or change a background.

So it's only low-res? what use is that for serious work?

Many companies only need social media sized photos. 1080 pixels is more than enough for that. Remember… not everyone… in fact few, actually print.

I’m sure it will. All ai generated images are low res right now, not just Adobe.

Matt I love all your videos but there is a difference to me between using the pixels that you took vs using someone elses pixels. Content Aware is your pixels and generative fill is olther peoples pixels. I will use generative for a customers image that they need correct but not on my images Im showing with the claim that I took it. Just my two cents on how I use both of them.

Hi Dennis. You are incorrect. Content Aware is in NO way your pixels. It is the computer's pixel and the computer generated them. But even if it wasn't, who cares? If you don't want to use it, don't. If some one else does want to use it, how does it affect you in any way. No contest will allow it and there are multiple tools to detect AI images, so there is no way in which this affects your photography in any way.

@@MattKloskowski whoa I just said my opinion on it and it is my pixels being arranged by the computer instead of by me. Do we not tell content aware which of our pixels it can choose? Generative fill uses images from other people’s images and I just personally have a problem with it in certain circumstances like I mentioned. If you know of software that contests can use like to know for reference of the ones I’ve judged for.

I think removing distractions from a photo with AI is totally fine. I think what the issue here Matt, is people are using AI to add in things that were never there in the first place and make zero sense. Now if you were a graphics designer, yeah okay that's legitimate and fine. But if you're a photographer, I think THAT is the issue here. Not using it to remove distractions and flaws from an image. Yes they may not be your pixels and therefore someone else's, but unless you were a pixel peeper so to speak and very particular, I doubt most would notice. At least if you were only using it for your personal use. Professional use is a different story.

I guess my question back is... how in any way does this affect you? Who cares what other people do. If they're happy doing it to their photo, good for them. Contests have rules and it's nearly impossible to submit a fake photo these days because numerous websites can tell you if it was altered with AI or not. So how does what some one else does affect you in any way? If they make an image they're happy with why is that bad, because they chose to go a different route than you would?

This is all great stuff, but the title of the video is "My FAVORITE Tool" (which I assume is Generative Fill/Expand) and then you utilize MULTIPLE other Photoshop tools for various specific cleanup needs throughout the various examples. 🤷‍♂
