Hello everyone, and this is one of my favorite days of the year. It's Mexican Army Day! I'm sure you're asking yourself, "Why do I care about a day that celebrates the Mexican military?" And that's a great question!
I'll tell you why it's important to know all there is to know about Mexican Army Day. First of all, the Mexican Army is known as the Ejército Mexicano (Mexican's Military).
Secondly, this day of celebration commemorates the achievement of independence against France on May 5th, 1862. On that day, President Benito Juarez declared war after French forces crashed through Veracruz and occupied the capital.
The next part of your question might be "What did the French do to get on Mexico's bad side?"
Very simple: they wanted cheap Mexican labor and tried to invade during the Franco-Mexican War between 1838 and 1839. If that wasn't bad enough, France sent a secret agent named Ferdinand Maximilian to install him as Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico.
But it all turned around when the US decided to support Mexican President Juarez, which forced the French out of Mexico at the end of 1862.
So now you're asking yourself "Okay, but why do we celebrate this?" And that's another great question! We celebrate this because we love our country and we honor the Mexican Army. The Ejército Mexicano has defended us, and this is a great day to come together and appreciate everything they've done for us!
