I have had some Mollies out since early March with no heater in a 25 gal tub and they have already bread once and not showed any sign of stress. They are not a pure line or anything special, but I will say they have needed fed even with significant amount of plants. Then about 3 weeks ago I moved out my stock of red mosaic dumbo ear guppies in a 140 gal with a 300 watt heater and they have been doing great. The tub has lots of floaters and some stems just floating around. The plants are looking good so they are obviously producing waste. I have fed them fish food about once week and keep introducing live cyclops and seed shrimp to give them something to munch on until the regular insects start showing up. I am in central Ohio so very similar to Rachel as far as temp and weather.

This time I'm adding my marble angels, red and albino bristlenose, apisto cacatuades double red along with red and blue neocaridinas. I have a 300 gallon that I would like to try some non competitive species like the bristlenose, blue neocaridina and either CPDs or either of the other danios. They are in a tub with Mystery Snails that are laying eggs like crazy, and Ramshorn and Bladder/Pond Snails, and the plants are Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) and Guppy Grass in the water, with a Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce floating on top. The Guppy Grass seems to crowd everything else out

GO FOR IT!!! lol. as for my fish, I don't know yet, have a tiny balcony on a city appartment and last year I did my first out door tubbing with regular and endler guppies. Even though it was a small tub, high and not so wide, without a pump, they did amazing. So going to see what I can get out here to do an inexpensive but on the balcony this year. What I did notice is that in the city there are less and less bugs, even for my pitcherplants I almost have to catch them myself. so hopefully with some danio's I'll have enough bugs to feed them, but will monitor anyway. As always, thanks a bunch, just became 'fry' but will do more when I can.

I live in zone 10, Phoenix, but believe it or not I have a suggestion for you. Every year I managed to leave some of my platies outside when I bring in my outdoor fish for the winter, and every year they survive. I'm moving out 10/15 of my K class endler colony. Just because I want to see how well they do. They've been very well established for over a year inside (I have to drop them off at my LFS every few months so they don't overpopulate my 'small fish' tank). I want to see what happens to their color outside. They are blonde endlers who have very little (if any) black at all. I bet the males will really pop from all the sunlight the small bin I have gets.

Don't know if this interests you at all, but I would love to see you keeping some of the terribly, critically endangered live bearers from Mexico and the Southwest United States (beyond the least killies, which are not endangered). Some of them are beautiful fish, and they are on the verge of disappearing from the wild due to habitat destruction, just like the white clouds! You are such a great fish keeper, that I think you might have success where others fail--and someone who could keep an outdoor breeding program during the summers could really have a good time with them. Currently, the Europeans are more interested in our own disappearing species than we are in North America, and I'd love to see that change! Also, many of them are quite small and make great nano fish.

I appreciate all you do to help us learn more about fish and their care. I am really wanting to try the tubbing idea too but here in the high desert of AZ (1/2 way between Tucson and Phoenix) I am worried that even in my screen room or under car port, the 40 gallon with waterfall will be too hot and it is full shade so not sure what plants would work. What are you thoughts?

@@RachelOLeary Thanks for the quick response. I will. Probably not any fish small fish that can handle warm water. I will try a season of plants and monitor the temps then maybe fish next year once I have some clue what I am dealing with temp wise try fish. I will get back to you and let you know if case you get other questions down the road on warm water tubbing as I am sure I am not the only person out here in the west who wants to try outdoor fish breeding, but I am not having any luck finding the ones who have done it on a small scale. They breed quite readily but often will eat their eggs before they can hatch into fry so it's easiest to mop spawn them in two containers

Rachel, I live in Arizona, which is quite warm year round, if I were to make these tubs with a heater for the few days a year that it's cold, do you think they'd be able to survive our summers? Or would it be too hot for most tropical species?

I really don't know much about your climate, m y experience is all with my own. I will say, it is most likely worth trying. You may want to start with plants and monitor the temps to see how high they get in your tub, and if its worth trying fish.

I’m not Rachel, nor do I live in Arizona (Michigan), but I believe shade would be your best bet without running an expensive chiller. Shade can provide a significant drop in temperature whether it be a natural source or with shade netting. Hopefully someone can chime in further. Good luck! P.S. I couldn’t imagine living in a hot state like Arizona. I like ice fishing way too much lol.

@@ryanwilson5936 exactly, or make some tests. Tubs in sun, Tubs in shadow, tubs partly placed in the ground in sun and shadow, tubs mainly underground,... Monitoring and choose your fish. The bigger the bin, the more thermal stability (to compensate night/day temp differences, or differences in days)...And remember : fish in nature (mostly) have different temperature saisons.

@@RachelOLeary do you mean that living in aquariums they do "meh", so it's too risky to have them just hang around or die, or do you mean breeding is "meh", so you might not get anything worth the effort, or do you mean people buying them is "meh", so you might not make enough selling them to lukewarm interest? 🤔

Oh. I think that was part of what surprised me about them being sold, I'm not sure how much they would be able to eat as filter feeders. But I didn't ask what the pet shop sells to feed them. I couldn't tell if they were alive or not.

How would you handle a situation where you'd love to have a summer tub stocked with some of your favorite fish, but you don't have an indoor location that the fish could go to in the winter when temperatures in my state (Massachusetts) are way too low for fish to be left in ponds outdoors.
