Thank you for demonstrating and sharing these fire steels. I like them all and will most likely purchase Blastmatch. The tender maker is really neat too. I will head down to our local dollar store to see if they have some parts to construct one.

Great steels there. I have yet to pick up a 1/2". Has been on my list for some time. I really like my primus. Good size, sturdy handle and very good and comfortable handle. And 10 bucks. It throws sparks like an angle grinder on a chunk of ferrocium.

I've had a black Gobspark for years, and it's *never* let me down. That thing is like dragon's breath in my hand. I can throw sparks for like nine feet or more off of it. Anything sufficiently prepared... one or two rips of my Gobspark and it's good .. to.. go. - I don't live in a very cold region, no like Maine or anything, but I would trust it with my life. It's a good piece of kit. I keep it in my get home bag or even my EDC when spending any real time outside.

Very interesting and useful video! Use a file handle or drawer pull to make a firesteel handle. Just drill a hole about 1/32" larger than the firesteel and glue it into the handle. You can get file handles at hardware stores and maybe home improvement stores.

I purchased a 6'×1in ferro rod for $75.00 from Firesteel.Com, by far the best ferro rods I've ever seen, and ever used. I have over 60-70 rods from everywhere, most are 5'×1/2-6 '×1/2 rods, bigger is definitely better in regards to ferro rods in my opinion. A 6'×1/2 rod last me 4 months tops, I build a couple fires every day year round, it's kind of an obsession of mine. I don't own any of the ones you're reviewing, but I'm definitely interested in a few. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with me, I appreciate it sir.

I have a fire steel from Walmart (magnisium block) and it is very small, but does what it is meant to. Can larger fire steels light tinder that smaller ones cannot and what about when your tinder is damp? Are the larger ones more reliable in that situation.

Larger Ones are easier to handle for most and also can generate more sparks at a time thus making ignition simpler sometimes.

  • @DropForgedSurvival

How I perceive them... You just said the same time to me twice.. with a different way of saying it. Mischmetal means "Mixed metal" a Ferro Rod is blend of Iron, Cerium, Magnesium, and a few other Reactive Allows. The old old old School ones were first made of "Iron and Cerium" mostly... But now most if not all Rods for Firestarting are creating using a heavy blend of metals and alloys.

M K I coat mine in Petroleum when not in use. Thin layer... and slip them in thick ziplock bags for storage. "Gobspark" for instance... slap a hunk of petroleum on the rod and put in the tube.

#DropForgedSurvival Found this video late, but I love the collection. I am a huge fan of Firesteel.com steels, as they are very decently priced for the normal-sized steels and their strikers are awesome. I buy extras and attach them with my LMF steels, similar to what u did. I like the Smiths tinder box and I will definitely be looking into that. You should check out Ingralls Creek Outfitters and try out the striker he makes. Its quite sharp and throws wicked sparks. He also has cool tinder sticks. Keep doing cool videos man!

The 3/4 inch super dragon is around $32. He will be happy to drill a hole, if you ask. Superior product and excellent value.
