My Favorite Drum Amps For Electronic Drums

Музыка

There are alot of drum amps out there, I've gotten a chance to use most of them, so here are my thoughts about the different brands, and which I like the most. I also share some of my favorite headphones and in-ears for electronic drummers. I don't claim to be an expert in this area, just my two cents on the topic :)

62 yrs old, playing since I was 8. I recently bought my first E-kit. Roland TD-17. First of all, I can't believe I'm playing an electronic drum kit! 2nd of all...I can't believe how much freaking fun I'm having. I plan on using the E-kit at my next gig, if we ever get off of lockdown here in CA. This chanell has been a Godsend for me. I watched video here for hours before pourchasing my kit. Keep up the good work and Thank You!

Hey Richard, I am in the same boat as you, Im 61, and I played my acoustic kit at home and gigging for years. Now I have a condo and I have to but a freaking cheesy corny fake stupid looking electronic kit. I'm so embarrassed ! So I got to thinking, I want a killer amp, even a double PA system, as 65 Drums used sometimes. I am gigging outside this summer with a electronic set, and Im on a 5 acre farm. I need to get the beat out and to be able to keep up with the guitar and bass Marshall Amps. I got to ask 65 Drums what I should buy .

Thanks for another great video Justin. After some online research, I decided to buy an Alto 15” 2000W powered speaker. It includes two inputs. My headphones do sound better, but I felt this gave me some options for down the road (like if I ever decide to play them outside my basement) with adding another speaker, mixer, and sub. I dont feel like the speaker has broken in yet as the sound is just “ok”, but I suppose adding a mixer now could help.

I'm in the process of buying a drum amp so this is very well timed. I was about to rush into a decision and then remembered my Google Home Max has an aux in so just sat that next to my kick drum and it's good enough to buy me some time so I can make a better informed decision.

Justin's advice here is spot on, IMHO. A powered PA speaker is the best of all worlds in my book. I use a Yamaha DSR115 ..which actually is a bit of overkill because it can move so much air and has so much power, but a person can find used self powered PA speakers all over now. You may not get all the connectivity you like, which can be a drawback. But they sure work well. I've also noticed a couple posters on here recommend using studio monitors as an alternative. And yes, those will work fine. BUT if you want to be able to move air to actually feel the drums (especially the bass drum) you'll need a big driver. No way around it. A well powered 12 inch will do the trick. And I get that for some people the whole idea of using edrums is to avoid excessive volume, but keep in mind that studio monitors will not give you the feel or sensation that a larger speaker will. And the ATH M50's are great. Absolutely love them. Can use them with your edrums or for home recording or just listening. Great video, Justin! Well done!

I have always used in ears when playing acoustic drums at church. Shure215s is where I started. I had some issues (clipping on the backing tracks while playing at church) so upgraded to Shure425s. Could have been an after market cable I got with a microphone or a quality issue because issue developed was about 2 years into heavy use. 425s much improved and love them. I agree with Justin that better sound in my in ear monitors has improved my playing with the band. I heard things I didn’t hear before and it helps a lot. Early this I got my first edrum and have used the Shure425s and all is well. I have a TD-17 with a VEX Series 3 and a 2nd floor tom (4th floor tom option with VEX). The lows in the 4th Tom has been a EQ problem. Too much output from module will cause a terrible distortion. Have to dial it back with master volume and master bass. Recently I bought a used DA200S for $260 on reverb. Due to COVID-19 our church has been online only so some of us meet outside in my horse pasture and play worship music (acoustic guitar, vocals, and my light edrum supporting). It has worked great and I am very pleased. The DA200S has stereo inputs for my drum module outs (no need for TS to TRS adapter). Acoustic guitar and vocals comes from my friend’s effects board headphone output to drum amp aux input. I can mix on the amp and get a very good balance. Three band EQ is great. Drum amp has lots of power if needed and can make a pretty large pasture area feel small with the sound it puts out. Very happy with it. I am interested in getting extension speakers for it if anyone has suggestions since it is very directional. Use as a drum monitor in the basement when I don’t want to use in ears and can really blast me and my family if I turn it to anywhere near half power. Oh DA200S is nice as well because can double as a DI box (very heavy one, hahaha). Keep up the good work Justin. Your channel is great. Has helped a ton in my new adventure into edrums.

Very timely video! Discussion about this topic currently happening on your FB page. For me, I've been gigging for small 300-500 seat venues with two Roland PM-200s. Sound is adequate for that size and relatively quiet setting (musical theater). If I was playing with my rock band these wouldn't even come close. We use a JBL PA (not sure of the model), but it takes up one of the guys entire truck bed. That bad boy is thumpin!

Justin, first of all, your videos are a gold mine of mostly un-biased enthusiasm! (GREAT if you are looking into Roland, which I am), So thank you! I just turned 60, been playing drums since I was 11, I've had more [acoustic] kits than I can count.😀 I *NEVER* would even have considered the E Drum scourge if I hadn't had a wakeup call (actually, 10 years ago when I last tried one, they sucked!). I live in the city, its very hard to play real drums, it's limiting, to say the least. I have a sweet Pearl BLM kit upgraded, all of the *exact* cymbals and equipment I have wanted, I've slowly built it... BUT I'M NOT PLAYING THEM because of my living in an apartment. WELL, I just ordered the TD17KVX kit and a Mackie Thump 12A and I am selling my babies!!! YES, It is freeing.

Peavey Kb300 amp for keyboards is the most versatile amp to run an electronic drum kit. A lot of power trough one 15" for bass and a big horn for high tones. 3 inputs, volume + gain controls, low, mid, high and reverb for each input. Master volume and reverb. The kb300 is powerful. Simply the best. Easy to find for about $200 on the market.

I use 2x Yamaha DXR10 mkII with my TD-50 for a true stereo Hi-Fi setup and it sounds really killer! I was tempted by the QSC's at first but Yamaha 7 years warranty is hard to beat. Might add a sub later but for now it is plenty enough. For headphones it's the Beyerdynamic DT-1990 run through a headphone amp for more power and resolution. I'm pretty satisfied with this setup so far.

I am using at the moment the Ultrasone P880. I have never heard of them before I went to a big music store and just tried lots of different headphones. They stood out from all the Sennheisers, Beyerdynamics or AKGs. Only downside, they don't cancel outside noises as good as my Beyerdynamic MMX300 headset. But it is still good enough to not hear the hits of the sticks on the cymbals. A big plus for me is also, that it sits relatively tight, so you can move your head to the music without them falling down. I was using the Shure SE425 before, and only with the TD-17 module, that was okay. But when I started to use EZDrummer, I noticed, that the bass was simply too weak. It sounds really disappointing with the Shure. In my opinion of course.

You forgot the (somewhat expensive) wildcard which I use for home and gigging- Bose L1 Pro8. Loud, full range sound, multiple inputs, and tweeter array at ear level, not from the floor! When playing at church we have my drums and the rhythm guitar both going through the Bose. Guitar and the mid and highs from the drums also through house PA, but that's more to fill the room than the volume needed. Congregation of up to 80, and the Bose is at around ½ volume only. Also great for vocals, and listening to music of course!

A used PA is a damn good choice. But I was surprised, that my Warwick BC150 bass amp was quite nice too. Warwick builds some of the more transparent bass amps and that one is no exception. It's damn close to a PA and the 15" version goes easily below 40hz. 150 Watts RMS is still loud enough for practice.

As always Justin, Amazing video! Like many of the comments below, I am 50 and have been playing since 11 Years old. Mostly acoustic but finally bought my first REAL E-KIT. Just arrived 15 minutes ago! The Roland VAD507. My Question is: Is there a double pedal that seems to work better for the Full size Roland Bass Drums? The Strike zone is a little smaller than most. Please chime in folks, would love to get your feedback. On a side note I am running with the KAT HD400 PA System. Bought it over 4 Years ago and it has been amazing!

Great Review Justin. Using headphones but check out (Newish) Yamaha Stagepas 1K (1000W): Listened to it and the bass response is fantastic. Better than similar Bose offerings. Also about $1000. Trying it on my EKit next week but wondering how it would compare purely sound wise to the Simmons. Seems like the high end quality and dispersion on the Yamaha SHOULD be superior. More later.

I have a Mackey thump 12 that sounded like heaven compared to the crappy guitar amps ive played on before! I dont have an e kit but i am strongly considering buying the quite heads and stuff to convert my accoustic kit and I'm glad to hear the Mackey thumps on this list. Awesome channel good info keep it up!

Well, you cover some specs when it comes to the various drum amps but what EXACTLY are you using for YOUR PA system. I mean I see what brand your using on the speakers and sub woofer but what are you using for a mixer? wattage and all (powered portable mixer? exact speaker models powered or passive, etc) That would be really nice to know. Thank you for these videos.

I just wanted to add that my Roland TD25 module does not have enough output power for my AKG K550s. A lot of higher end and reference headphones are designed to be used with bigger systems and/or a headphone amp. I would suggest looking for something more geared towards use with an iPod or phone, i.e., something that needs less power. For example, my Sennheiser Momentums (designed for iPhone) sound great through the Roland. It's probably worth doing a little research, as with anything. Having said all that, the Audio-Technica ATH-m50s are one of the GOAT and will sound great with less power.

I just ordered 2 of the Alesis Strike Amp 12's for my BeatBuddy, We don't have a real drummer so I'm hoping this will produce a good drum sound. We're using a full PA system for voices and I mic the guitar players amps to it (also my keyboard amps...I use 3 Traynor k4's for my keys).

I have a Roland TD17KVX and was using a small 50 Watt Simmons that blew up last night. normally I would connect my iPhone to the Simmons and play to a song via bliuetooth, just to play at home and jam with pals, which way would you go ? A bigger Simmons like the one on this vid ?

Would it be a mistake to buy smaller versions of these amps? I don't have a lot of space, and I don't want anything super loud anyway...just something I can use instead of headphones (and maybe incorporate a multi-fx pedal). Thanks.

Hey Justin. Great video. I recently bought a Roland TD-27kv. I am playing in a couple of bands. I have a question regarding performing live. I bought headphones and have been playing my e-kit through an old pa that I have had. It's an old Crate PA Head and it pushes a couple of Behringer, double 15 woofers/tweeter. To me it sounds pretty good and can produce fairly loud volume. I know a lot of e-drummers buy 1 or 2 of the Roland PM-200 180-watt 1x12 inch Personal Drum Monitor(s) which are about $515 a piece. The band said when they had an e-drummer in the past, that they could barely hear the drums thru the stage monitors. Would it make sense for me to use my cheap PA as drum monitors for me and the band to hear the drums on stage and then extend the sound into the house pa or would it be better to buy the Roland monitors? Obviously I don't want to spend another grand if I don't need to.

Hi Justin, shout-out from 🇦🇺 Question, would you say that 80w amps are more close to the level 1 or 2 market? I’ve got a td17kv (thanks to your vids, bought for $1,700 AUD with double kick), and I’m a beginner drummer and not gigging. I saw a 2nd hand KAT ka1 for $200 AUD and there’s another 80W for $300 AUD and I’m wondering if I should save more $$$ Help????? Thanks mate
