Cats are such detail oriented creatures. My cats don't use buttons, but they definitely tell me when something isn't right or to their liking. I love that they trust me to fix it! ❤️

they really do. my cats let me know when their blankets aren’t positioned right, when the food bowl has a visible bottom (we free feed due to busy and inconsistent schedules), or when our little cat brings another creature into the house

Cats remind me of neurodivergent humans. I have ADHD and watching Billi of BilliSpeaks, I identify with her noise sensitivity (akin to sensory processing issues, specifically hypersensitivity, in ND humans). I identify with her constantly changing moods and wants, which is me with ADHD. I identify with her need for play. And my life is defined by change, randomness, spontaneity--very little routine. I also tend to be very messy, just put stuff wherever when I am done with it. But my autistic friends are more like your cat: prefer a sense of order, things should be a certain way. Everything in its place. I make this analogy not to say that ND humans are like animals, because enough neurotypical people thing we are subhuman or broken humans anyway. I make this analogy because neurotypical humans love these behaviors in their pets while shaming them in humans. I want to point out that these behaviors aren't necessarily bad and neurotypical humans should praise and accept them in ND humans too, as well as your pets.

Cats are actually as smart as human toddlers, so it's not surprising to see the little fella knowing what to ask once he understands it! It's definitely so cute though

I really like that you try to keep a healthy scepticism with regards to how Russell uses his buttons. As in, you consider all possible meanings of a button depending on how Rus is currently using it (and has used it in the past), you keep in mind that he might have misunderstood/forgotten/attributed a different meaning to a button, and last but not least, you don't rule out the possibility that mayyybe he might just be pressing buttons for general attention 😄 After having used the buttons so long, I think it would be easy to inadvertently overestimate a button conversation and favour our human interpretation of the words (instead of how the cat might use them). You clearly try to avoid that as best as possible... and promptly have your mind repeatedly blown when it becomes clear that yes, there was indeed a puffy in the closet 😄 All things considered, I would say that Russell's communication in this video is quite clear. 🙂 He repeats his request for "help" until you stand up, then he approaches you for a moment (possibly to reinforce that yes, he wants you to come), afterwards he looks at the ball, heads straigth to the tunnel and sniffs/touches the broken string, looks at you and back to the tunnel, and only leaves once you pick up the ball (also right when you started to understand him, I think he may have picked up the excitement in your voice).

Thank you!!!! I know that a lot of this seems too good to be true, and there is a ton of science between associative learning concepts! But “help”, “love you”, “mad” etc are the less concrete realistic ways that I taught him to communicate and I try to keep my mind open that it could be me projecting too much. But this one literally blew my mind!!

@@catmanjohn_ I just thought about this the other day too! The “Help” button is a very opened ended command. You sometimes end up following to homely deeds and other days it’s cat toys! Very smart on your end I must say😌

He's so smart. I don't think none of my current kitties could learn to use buttons. But Russ reminds me of Gigi my first kitty (RIP). She would have love to have words to command me around.

It’s interesting how important little things (to us) are to them. They’re so innocent & authentic with how much every little thing means to them. So good that people are helping animals express themselves. It gives us a better understanding of them ❤️

I think he waits at the button because he has s waiting for you to get it, like giving you time to process the human word he just expressed.

This reminds me of how kids ask “why” because it gets a more in-depth response than other question forms. Sometimes they’re just playing or trying to get attention and don’t actually have a question (and that’s fine and normal). The cats might not understand what the buttons actually mean to you, just that the “help” button gets them attention and stimulation from you for awhile.
