MY FAVORITE ADVENTURE YET - Kayak Camping in the Desert
kamchatkagear.com - My online store
This is my favorite video I've ever made. In this video I meet up with a friend and spend two days kayak camping on the San Juan River in southeastern Utah (27 river miles from Sand Island to Mexican Hat). We explore Native American ruins, find petroglyphs and potsherds and moki steps, find a crappy campsite, and just have a great time overall.

I love watching your videos. My favorite part is your good attitude no matter what happens, I learn a lot from you. I'm about to celebrate my 76 Birthday and I've just started really doing van camping. It's all great fun, thanks
Hi, I'm 68 and thinking of getting a Kayak. I live on a 27' sailboat. Sometimes when I go out overnight I stay in a bay. I think a kayak would be a great way to explore around the nooks. I loved this episode. It was great seeing the simple gear you took along for the overnight portion. The bivy sac looked great. I always enjoy your explorations of the remnants of indigenous cultures. Your appreciation of history is wonderful. Thank you for what you do.

Lifetime kayak has a 8.5foot sit on top with 250lb weight limit. I can throw it in my Honda CRV and be at the river in 10 minutes. I’m 71yrs young, so weight of the yak is manageable. 🌈🌴💖 Florida Granny
Kayak camping tip... bring thick wool blend winter socks. When you made camp brush off your feet. Splash your feet with water to get sand out of your toes. Put the thick socks on and they'll wick the little bit of water off. Then put your sandals back on with the socks on. Dry feet, and at bed time just brush the excess camp dirt off the socks and hop in your sleeping bag.
This is the first video I saw of yours! I was watching videos of kayaking rivers for research to do the same with my dog. Yours came up and I was hooked! You’re one of my absolute favorites on KZread. Genuine and ethical work! Cheers to good health and keep ‘em coming.
River house is the most livable of all the ruins you’ve visited so far. Gorgeous!
We use these shards as inspiration for the designs on our pottery that we make.. My son is Navajo/Choctaw, and I am a Choctaw Native,... taking pottery and treating them as a modern human treats things is bad ju ju... If you treat them like your children they will be good to have,... if you treat them like a dog they will show you what you are...Some consider that bad ju ju... the bad ju ju is in the passive habits that most people have while in possession of them... the elders say that some of these shards were used and broken during pandemics of the past and that the memory of the suffering remains in the pottery shards... So you are right about not taking them... Not touching them is also a good idea if you want you and your family to be safe....
Nothing better than a river trip with an overnight next to the river.
Its a great place to sit on a rock and meditate!
That was fun to watch Triston! Sorry you ended up in the drink tho! Dennis enjoyed it too! Look forward to the next Kayak adventure with you two!🐎😀🇺🇸🌏
I'm glad you got in a swim. It's a refreshing experience that I have enjoyed a couple of times. I know that it's a long way from where you live but I have to recommend a trip to our First National River, The Buffalo, Ponca-Arkansas area in May. Since you and I avoid the crowds, go mid-week if you get the chance. Thanks for another great video.
Learning to read rapids and scout a line will make your trip even MORE fun!
This is your second video that I've been able to watch. In the last one you explained how you were set up. I enjoyed that. I've been kayaking for 45 yrs. I like seeing what others do to prepare. Thanks for you adventures. Very enjoyable.
That is my FAV place on the planet!!!!!
I drove there once. Rented a yurt from a native guy. Was the best trip ever.
Monument Valley is still a special place. I went for the first time in 1992 camped in my tent overlooking the Mittens. After the second and third visits, the campsite was still there. I spent 3 days and 2 nights on horseback with a Navajo guide. The last time was 2012, an hotel now obscures the view from where the campsite used to be, great pity. No need to go back again.
Ok, I’m 2 years late! That looked so fun! Kayaking on a Chocolate Milk River...sounds like a country song! Thanks for taking us along!

Lol thanks for watching!
Much appreciate the effort and recording you do. amazing for us all to watch while being in the Covid-19 lockdown
Just enjoyed watching this again. After spending time with God, your videos add a certain quiet and beauty missing in most of our everyday lives. Kayaking is a staple for our adventures. We try doing it in every state. My fave so far was AZ through the canyons. This reminds me of that.😊
Nice work -- and a good save on Ledge.
Did a 3 day trip with my scouts on that river . Started at Mexican Hat and did volunteer work for the Park Service cleaning up brush from camp sites. Also visited Indian sites. The river is the third most heavily silt laden river in the world. Many sand bars at the takeout as the backwater from the dam occurs. The lower canyon we passed thru looked like a mini Grand Canyon at the "Goosenecks section".
I don't know about there but here in New Mexico we find "Mortar" holes, sometimes called "Indian Wells" where natives many years ago used hard rocks to grind impressions, "Mortars" for grinding; presumably things like Mesquite pods into flour to make a bread-like food & such. Often times, in the dry areas the mortar depressions can be used to collect water as well. These are found in areas where encampments were set up. Frequently, the holes cut into the vertical rock walls were thought to have been used to support wood poles to create rain shelters. Nice video. Looked like great fun & terrific interesting petroglyphs.
Just recently discovered your channel and I have enjoyed watching your hikes out West. I really enjoyed this episode with the kayaks. As I’m much older than you are we’ve started phasing out of the hiking and gotten more into the kayaking camping which we enjoy quite a bit. Keep on adventuring!
Like that idea of using sponge to get water out . Brilliant
Your vast knowledge, your skills and your sweet personality make all of your videos wonderful. I really enjoyed watching you and Dennis. Thanks for everything!
I really enjoyed watching your adventure kayak camping trip. It was fun to tag along with you, thanks!
Awesome! I can almost picture the Natives village of teepees and them living there
Ok, let's see you top this video...LOL That was the fastest 45 minutes I've ever spent. So, so interesting and fun! As usual the scenery was beautiful. I think my favorite part was the ruins. Amazing!!!! Thanks for sharing!

Looked like you guys had fun. The petroglyphs & pottery shards were so cool. I do not like silty water... I need to see the bottom. One of the comments said it was great you have 6 k subscribers... And in 3 short years you have grown your channel to 96.4 k or did it say 94.6 k. Congrats! Such a pleasure tagging along on your adventures. Hope to see Cassie now & then 🙋♀️

Lots of fun and really enjoyed the ruins and petroglyphs!
I've canoed 14 miles both the little miami and great miami whitewater with great nature but nothing like the scenery of your kayaking video. Again Thanks for sharing
I took a several day commercial float trip down the San Juan beginning at Mexican Hat landing down river through the goosenecks nearly 20 years ago - wow! Your video brings back great memories. Like you, I usually do my camping in the back of my SUV (Ford Escape) often in boondocking areas of public lands. Your videos are wonderful in landscapes I love. FYI - found you via "Finding Simon" recommendation, another KZreadr with great outdoor travel adventures.

Oh wow. I just booked a trip that will take me to the Valley of the Gods region, and I had thought that the area might be mostly flat, dry, and featureless. Then by chance I saw this old video of yours .. now I am looking forward to my day or two around Mexican Hat! Thanks for the awesome video.
It was great to see the Native American stuff. Not a lot of tourists get to see what you saw. Thanks for sharing.

that looked like fun. Gorgeous rock formations. Wonder if those holes were navigational marks to read from the water to locate a location on land. Natives were pretty clever. Thanks for taking me along.
I really enjoyed watching this adventure. That was some seriously thick, soupy water. All the sights & sounds were amazing. Thanks for not covering the video with music as so many others do. Love the natural sounds. Great recovery on the dump, looked a bit chilly, LOL.

Yeah, the water was bizarre. There was literally maybe half an inch of visibility. Crazy. And I'm not really a fan of music in videos either. I think areas like this can speak for themselves. Thanks Steve.
Outstanding video!! Could not believe all the Indian artifacts! 👍👍👍😎🇨🇱 keep up the good wrk! PS. My wife and i’ve been kayaking for a long time. Fun!!
What a great trip. Loved the pottery fragments and cliff steps.
Sooo much fun watching this video. Different, but you made me laugh a few times. I’ve done a few Kyack excursions but with a group every time. Loads of fun!
Awesome river trip from beginning to the end!
Great video! You had me going back and forth between your video, google earth, and google all the time. Thanks for the impressive images.
Such a beautiful trip. Thank you for taking us with you. The petroglyphs are amazing. Favorite part was the flat-ish water portions.
Wow, what an amazing place. Great piece of history.
The "flute player" is Kokopelli, a fertility deity portrayed as a hunchbacked flute player with feather/antennae projecting from the head. Popular myth says he (?) was a trader from deep in Mexico, perhaps Aztec or Toltec, who was the original provider of seed corn to the Southwestern Native Americans; the flute to announce his peaceful nearing. A fire pan tip: use a rectangular cake pan. You can utilize longer sticks that way. As for the larger wood available, you don't need and ax or saw. Just stick a foot of the wood in the fire and as it burns off, just keep feeding it in. On your flip, when the river takes even a slight bend, the water is going to pull you into the wall on the inside of the bend. If you had entered the rapid as far right as you could and then paddled like hell aiming for the left bank and pulling more with your right paddle, you probably would have avoided that. The caution is always never get parallel with the waves. There is an odd occurrence in the San Juan called "sand waves". I still don't understand the physics/hydraulics, but they can be standing waves with a LOT of sand in them pointing upstream and they pop up out of nowhere. For the future, if you can, find someone with at least a 14' self bailing oar raft to go along. They can carry a ton of shit and your camps will be so much more enjoyable.

That was an amazing trip. That looked like it was a blast. Beautiful scenery and really interesting things to see. The pottery shards were beautiful. Can you imagine what the containers looked like. Great video and what an fun adventure! You should do more videos with Dennis, that was great seeing you interact with someone. You have a great sense of humor that came out more in this video.
