My Faith Story within the Story of Liberation Theology

The originator of Liberation Theology, once under suspicion by the Church but now a close advisor of Pope Francis, Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez O.P. is a living legend in our time. In this event, Fr. Gutierrez shares his own story in faith, as well as the story of Liberation Theology.

This lecture has helped me understand Theology as a bi-product of 'Experience' or 'Life'. Theology is reflection on our experience of life. From life we derive a Theology, a rational explanation of our experience. And so we see how our experience is truth. This is a tentative reaction to Father Gutierrez's talk. A retired Catholic priest in Canada. So, if one has a close friend, for example, one can theologize about one's experience of friendship, that is, one can begin to see how the friendship fits into Christ's Teachings. Hey, I'm trying! Give me a break! :)

+Peter P true but it does run the risk of being fragmented in perception, scope and application. This is especially the case where the 'experience' is analysed using a social/political theory (marxism) in order to derive theology. The lens through which the Gospel is seen can be so reduced in worldview that it simply becomes a byproduct (or cultural tool) to acheive a social end. It's sad to see misappropriation in this way, especially when used to justify violence. The challange to the culture, mostly through passive resistance, comes from a change of spirit and life. That's the way Jesus dealt with power structures. In most respects it's also how Christians worked against European Communism and succeeded, especially in Poland.

BungleZippie I see you are a Theologian. I have a fellow priest who maintains that Liberation Theology has changed since 1990. I regard Pope Francis to be seriously influenced by that Theology. And hence he sees the material as too strong a factor in Christianity. The spiritual is almost overlooked. The spiritual is needed, and hence the loss to the Church(Catholic) to the Evangelicals in South America. I stand by an article by an Evangelical, Ron Rhodes, that seem to me to be a good description of Liberation Theology. Fr. Gutierrez version, as here presented, seems to fit Ron Rhodes version. Liberation Theology seems to please Leftist priests such bas the one I am dealing with here in Canada. Many devout and well informed Catholics are dismayed at Pope Francis, calling him Marxist, and very much perplexed by his Encyclical Laudatio Si. Change seems to be a value in itself for Pope Francis, as for all Progressive(Leftists). My self I like the balanced views of fine Catholic laymen such as John F. McManus. I'm not an expert in Liberation Theology, but I too am dismayed by Francis. And Francis keeps the company of dubious people such as the United Nations gang. And abandons such people as Steve Mosher. Thanks and Cheers, from a retired Catholic priest in Canada. BTW I have trouble with my fellow priest as to Islam; he loves the Sufism! I disagree and follow Walid Shoebat's estimation of Sufism.

+BungleZippie You are completely overlooking the eschatological mission of the Church, acting as a sign the Kingdom as arrived on Earth. Marxism is a mere sociological tool applied to understanding political economy and its ideology, in a process of acting out the message of the Gospels in the temporal sphere. People like Fr Gutierrez never applied Marxist analytic tools to a reading of the Gospels, a different scholarly exegesis is applied. Orthopraxis is guided by the Holy Spirit, Marxism, like the philosophical writings of Augustine and Aquinas, is merely informative.

Liberation Theology was almost shut down in Latin America by Ratzinger-Benedict. Is no to blame liberation theology for the shift to Evangelicals but the formal, uncomprehensible, unincarnete teology of Ratzinger. If your are worried by spirituality you may read the wonderful book of P. Gutierrez about spirituality in the option for the poor "We Drink from Our Own Wells". Regarding your former commentary that "Theology is reflection on our experience of life" I would say is a "theological reflection of our experience" from the stand point of its theological meaning, not a "experiencial reflexion only".
