One thing I would add is a few wooden coffee stirrers from Micky D's. They are great for making finger splints and emergency fire starting kindling.

I'm no longer sure that's worth it. Obviously I don't know the requirements, so stop me if this is wrong - but I think the coffee splint things have become so thin and flimsy from McDonalds as to be useless! Of course, I'm probably splitting hairs, and those splints, generally, if not the McDonald's ones, are perfectly good as per your suggestion!

Excellent stuff, as usual. Keep it up! RE: Knives. The advice you gave on a public forum was sage indeed. The relevant statute is the Criminal Justice Act 1988 s.139. The reason for the rule against fixed blades of whatever length was simple. At the time the weapon of choice for the then prevalent problem of football hooliganism was the Stanley Knife. Enough said. Of course, there are many laws in our land and many prohibitions. I committed a criminal offence every time I taped a record or a CD, or videoed a programme etc etc. I still commit these offences every time I record a programme on TV. Yet I am yet to feel the long arm of the law. The point being this (for the benefit of any Septics watching): I am very glad that s. 139 exists. The law, given the problem faced, makes sense. However the chances of you, me or anybody -unless they are incredibly foolish or appallingly unlucky - being prosecuted under s.139 is, frankly, remote in the extreme. The interesting thing is that it just shows what a truly law-abiding nation we are in that despite the incredibly remote chance of prosecution, people still abide by a law that is designed so that the police can cope with 0.0000000001% of the population. You would not see this happening anywhere else on the planet.

I was arrested under this law, and stood trial. It was accepted that I had a legitimate reason to be in possession of the knife. Another time I was arrested, and the police didn't even charge me, as at the time I had nowhere to live, and, although on its own that isn't a get out of jail free, I was clearly not that kind of "i got a knife" type person, and the police used sensible discretion. I must stress, however, that no one should carry an illegal-in-public knife, not without the most immediate and solid reason and purpose of a lawful nature. If you have an illegal knife that you just carry about with no real reason, you are likely to be arrested, and probably deserve it - what if you lost it or it was stolen?! That's a knife out there in who knows whose hands? Our laws are good, and we should follow them.

With regard to the Law, I agree. Fortunately, for the purposes of s.139 there are 'built in' exemptions. One of which is that you are carrying the knife for cultural or religious reasons. Hence, for the purpose of knife carrying I am a Scottish Sikh. As for what somebody else might do with a knife I lost, the same individual could take a carving knife out of their kitchen draw. Around 90% of knife crime is caused by kitchen implements. I am only responsible for my own actions, not the actions of others. I appreciate hearing from your sorry experiences.

I carry most of the EDC items either in my cargo pants or in my jacket (a smock parka when i have a day off) and shirt. I have a workbag with water bottle and utility pouch, the main bag contains my navigation/electronics, personal safety kit and vehicle paperwork. The utility kit contains a headlamp, some tools and a couple of bandaids. If i take them from the vehicle med-kit it is required by law to be replaced. But on my days off i carry a haversack or a belt pouch depending on the area i am going to, urban pouch and nature haversack. On a day trip i carry a backpack nature the 30 liter with external medical pouch and urban 18 liter with only the bottle and a minor med-kit external. My med-kit is always dependent on the time it would take to get help.

Our first level EDC and EDC backpacks (to include the Maxpedition pouch) are almost identical! and, since I've been watching you, I now carry a "brew kit" (a small homemade stove, three small metal "L" shaped tent stakes, 3 oz. (88 ml) of 91% alcohol, a couple of teabags and a couple of granola bars). I carry my brew kit in a 450 ml SS mug. My Brew kit is a new addition, and I'm not sure it'll stay in there. I just added a Mylar blanket (not sure why I didn't have on in there before?). Also, I'm old and take a few prescriptions, so I keep 3 days worth of my prescriptions in there and a small bag with a few Motrin and Benedryl in it. I also carry $100 inside my Maxpedition pouch.

Another great information video Tom. I'd personally loose the shims as you commit an offence of going equipped to steal. Emergency cash is great and probably used the most in my kit. I ditched the leatherman and started using a combination of knipex Cobra xs pliers, victorinox pioneer x as I oftend use scissors and a small screwdriver with reversible flat head and Phillips bit. All three items weight less than a leatherman and cost around the same. Keep up the great work mate.

Good stuff, mate! I have carried an Eagle a3 three day assault pack for almost 25 years now just because it didn't look tacticool in black. Only time I ever got the eyeball over it was on an early morning weekend ruck march when a city motorcycle cop passed me and turned in his seat for a long look. He definitely knew what the bag was. I consider the bag I carry essentialy non-descript and therefore urban camo. Only thing I've added now that I can't really run from trouble with a bad knee and hip is a soviet entrenching tool, you know in case I need to do any gardening or trimming of limbs. Mine is surplus, but a modern equivalent would be a Cold Steel Spetznaz shovel. Fits right in the pack as well as the Tactical Taylor version of 3 day assault pack. Only thing I would add would be 3 retort packs of salmon in olive oil (a lunch staple) and a small plastic jar of peanut butter. Feel that would last me 3 or 4 days if things went south. Cheers and all the best. Keep the vids coming.

Thanks for sharing, always good to see what others are carrying, we learn from each other. Just my take but maybe worth swapping out the .75l bottle for a 1l job as that's what the puritabs are designed for, I see you have a 1l folding pouch in your EDC pouch but you say that's more of a 'last resort' thing. I'd be curious as to where you got that, I like it, I've got a couple of sealy bags in my 'water purification' pouch with 1l and 2l marked off but they're a bit more rough and ready and not really EDC. Thanks again for taking the time to show us.

I know that, I'm probably in the minority. When I was a kid, the average person/man, carried: a watch, usually.. a wallet (cash, driver's license, cards, etc..), pocket knife (Barlow, Kamp King, electrician knife, etc). Keys, handkerchief, pen and eyeglass case. Mostly. Times, surely have changed. Now, it's like you're going out to combat? I always felt that the older I get, less is best. Needless to say, I'm not from the U.K. I'm actually from Pennsylvania. Fortunately, we don't have the same problems. Sorry, if I'm definitely in the minority?

One remark on the watch. A watch must tell accurate time always under any condition. Your watch does not do that since it runs out of juice.
