I had the opportunity to crew on a yacht in 1985, but instead became an air traffic controller for 31 years. I am now a USCG Master 50 ton captain and own a 50’ Azimut fly and will be upgrading to a 70. I like your content and occasionally wonder what would have happened if I took the deck hand job in Fort Lauderdale all those years ago.

Great video and great career summary. I have had similar experiences in not having a traditional career path and walking into different opportunities that come along (not in yachting though). Personally, I think your time on MY Arience seemed like the best. Great Captain who built a great crew and allowed you to pursue your passion while helping further the boat in the industry. Sorry about your injury but like what has happen in my career, when one door closes, another opens. I have seen some of your videos since this one and you have not broken stride at all. Good luck as you continue this journey!

Great video boet, nice to understand where you started. Just one question as you had a helicopter licence why did you not persue that career? I was a Life Saver on the John Rolfe rescue helicopter for 13 years and loved it. Wanted to always become a pilot but my folks did not have the money. Still a passion of mine in my late years. Love your videos and have seen every one and I am not even a yacht person but just like the way you present yourself and you make it so interesting. Sorry to hear about your back injury and hope this new path you want to follow brings all the success and happiness you deserve. Good luck and keep the content coming. Maybe a Q&A about how you met Rebeka and some of you highlights and funny moments. Stay safe and healthy. Cheers Glen. By the way I also live in Cape Town.

She has a wonderful smile ( 11:05 ). Aside from that curiosity, you have a great way of presenting your stories and your drone skills are top notch. Engaging, interesting, well presented story telling. Top job. You'll be doing this all your life, which is great. I bet you'll be telling hundreds of stories and flying a drone around your retirement home when you're an old man. On another note, the party at the end on that other boat must be a common occurrence, which must really piss owners off who are docked nearby and want a quiet evening with their mistresses. Are there ever any fights between boats in such situations? Maybe sneak alongside and pull a plug out the hull? mwahahaha

That is awesome. I have always been curious, why do so many South Africans end up in yachting? Also, what sort of drone do you use or prefer? Love the videos, and look forward to future content.

As a fellow new deckie from South Africa I hope I can give you some insight. As youngsters in South Africa we have a few options coming out of Matric (Our name for Grade 12), either go directly into studying at a tertiary institute or head into the workforce. Many South Africans simply can't afford 4 years of university studies let alone international travel yet we have access to global content like travel channels or KZread channels similar to this. So we are inspired to do something overseas like yachting in order to fulfill our goals. The South African currency is also very weak and our population has limited spending power in comparison to any first world country. The average monthly salary for an office worker is 30 000 Rand or 1800 US Dollars. The yachting industry fulfills multiple goals for South African youth. Travel, pay and life experiences

@@nicholasmeyer8439 Awesome, thanks. I always wondered. I've always been involved in racing, and there are a ton of drivers coming out of Brazil, because kids go karts are very popular there. I always wondered if there was a similar thing between South Africa and sailing or something. Best of luck on the new venture, and hopefully your work plans aren't affected by Covid-19 too much.

It has always been as much about "Will this guy fit in" as his/her skills, being trapped with a dud crew member on board is pretty frightening., conversely having your helicopter Licence meant you have something in common with the guy who employed you and you could learn, plus having some months of yachting experience meant you'd done your homework and we're a safe employ......( Ok plus of course, People who smile a lot are like blue sky, they cheer everyone around them up; just that important bit :) )
