You make a really good point about the difference between research faculty forced to teach vs faculty who actually are passionate about teaching. I did really well in high school and went to a top 10 engineering school, but most faculty (especially in my major) had no care of teaching at all. It really lowered my self-esteem, and my grades were pretty bad. It was basically a self-study type of environment. I had a lot of respect for those who did well at my undergrad school. I was somehow lucky enough to go to an Ivy League Grad School with a new graduate campus, and the faculty there were intertwined with industry and very involved and passionate about teaching, which made a world of a difference! Knowledge was just going into my brain at the fastest rate it had in years, and the support network was robust. It really was a life-changing experience for me as I learned more than ever, gained confidence, and made a lot of great connections. I'm actually really jealous about your quarter system, as I always had a lot of classes I would want to take but was limited to the amount I could handle per semester. Like you said, I think a lot of what you can learn in school is available online. A lot of the content I find better than the content from my undergraduate school since the lecturers are curated with teaching in mind. However, what is missing is the support network you get when studying in-campus from other students and TAs as well as the aforementioned connections you make on-campus. Looking back, I should have done more research into the differences in experience at schools when applying for undergrad, but I'm grateful to have had a great graduate school experience. It's also important not to let yourself get held back by any regrets you may have and to make the most of what you have and to always look for opportunities. Thanks for the insightful video!!

I finished my CS degree (Sydney Uni in Australia) last year and after having the final 1.5 years of my study almost all online I agree with you in that the value just isn't there for online uni. Was super hard to stay motivated to study and hard to get to know anyone without in person tuts. The upside was that my lack of focus for uni translated into increased time and focus on my ongoing internship and helped me land a good grad role, even if I had worse grades for it

I think my CS Journey was similar from a CS course perspective, but I bet/assume that Stanford teaches the courses in a much better fashion. I bet attending school at Stanford is also far more entertaining/fun than attending UC Berkeley.

Hey Rahul, no need to feel bad about forgetting about the Incan Empire. I'm Peruvian, we are taught about the Incan Empire through all Elementary and High School. I can't remember much either.

Great video, thanks for sharing. What would your thoughts be on whether to return to school to get a master's degree when you've already accumulated a few years of work experience in the same field? Do you think the learning/growth opportunity still makes sense given the opportunity cost with how well the tech industry pays and the fact that you are almost always learning as part of your job? I like that you took Computer Graphics and Computer Vision. Those are hard for most people but man I find them interesting. I graduated from PUC (Chile) and the courses are similar. We usually stay for 5.5 years to get a professional title which is something that only works here and nowhere else so that's a bit dumb. I also studied abroad one semester to UT Austin, it was amazing. Took Autonomous Robotics, Computer Graphics and Cryptography, all great but only got a B on crypto, it was super hard

I'm 3rd year cs at university of Toronto and for the last third of first year all the way until 2 weeks ago, classes were online. They back in person now but all of my classes are recorded as well. I prefer online since no need to commute. But for about 2 years it was online I met and talked to about 10 people through zoom calls, and planning on many more. The people I reached out to are people who are active in lectures in the zoom chat or the class discussion board so they distinguished themselves through their participation. A few of them are overpowered and have some neat original side projects, gives me some inspiration and I can ask them for advice and how they did it. If you make proper use of university to make friends and meet people, it's the perfect place. I'm surrounded by those smart people.

DO you have a video where you get into the program that allows you to graduate with a masters in 5yrs and how relevant that year was in terms of return on investment (was it worth foregoing a yr in facebook Fulltime?--i guess you'd be a little biased since you did meet your wife during this time xD )

Thanks Kevin - the 5th year program is called the coterm, and I applied for it in my 3rd year of undergrad. So I started earning credits for the masters in my 4th year, and finished it in the 5th year. For me it was worth it since (1) I was able to do research with faculty, and (2) the extra year did improve my job prospects quite a bit.

Great feats. My son's first degree is in Electronical Electronics. He desires to do an M.S in InfoTech with specializations in AI and Software Engineering. Can this be done at Stanford University? Is it right route or there's a better route, may be M.S Computer Science and obtain same specializations?

5:44 Yo! I did the exact same thing when I did super bad on my first Calculus exam (I'm currently a freshman) . I also had aspirations to be a film major (and I did transfer to the film program at my college a few weeks ago), so I didn't want to take Calculus or STEM classes anyway.

Wow, I just feel I missed out on a lot of things here. I did my masters from a no-name clg. I liked it, I did learn a lot of things. But the way you said that all of your professors were somewhat related to or directly related to these big tech companies makes me wonder, should I consider doing my Masters in CS again from a good clg. Would you suggest that? I'm 28 btw, I already feel I've spent a lot of time and money on education.

I don't think it's worth it to do a 2nd masters in general, unless it's a career pivot. I'd just try to apply for a brand name tech co and do well there for a few years. You'll get the same benefits.

Many times we think ideas are not worthy but Steve jobs said that you have power to change the world and you can make the world as you want to see it !

I'm pretty good about averaging 8 hours a night, but my sleep schedule is pretty erratic. I might stay up really late one day and sleep a lot more over the next 2 days

you're heavily underestimating how exceptional you or an average stanford student is. Hard work is not all that it takes to be at that level. it's ok to acknowledge that you're above average. you're likely top 0.1% IQ. MIT/Harvard students IQ average is estimated to be at that level. It probably doesn't feel like you're exceptional because the people you're in contact with are equally or MORE exceptional than you. Yes you can argue IQ isn't the full picture, it's a slice of the pie etc etc but you are exceptional. 1/1,000,000 Not everyone can be and that's ok. Of course, you should aim for the sky & end up among the stars but not any average person that is willing to work hard would succeed given your opportunities. I failed algebra 1 in 9th grade, you were done with algebra by 6th. it's just a different level.

There's merit to what you're saying (and I'm flattered), but I think there's a lot more "nurture" rather than "nature" for most of the people I interacted with. The other dimension is that IQ is pretty generic, but for most things worth doing in life, it's just exercising a few core skills that you can get better at over time.

@@RahulPandeyrkp yeah I'm not saying it's only nature. Just that there are many unquantifiable invisible factors that can influence your life more than you can know. It's pointless worrying about them tho gotta focus on what you can control. I can control how I spend my time, who I spend my time with, and what passions I pursue. Yes I lost many years of life due to mistakes that I made & uncontrollable circumstances but no point in obsessing over it. I'm pretty lucky overall, I still have the opportunity to succeed despite wasting prior ones.

My little brother is a 17 year old Senior graduating HS #1 in his class since 6th grade. Finished his AA in advance and is looking to take on computer science at Stanford. He is a first generation especially to go so far at so young. My sister and I are both graduate students and are trying to guide him the best way we can but our knowledge is limited due to our specification differences (education). He’s really nervous about how the admissions work and what to expect as far as difficulty regarding Stanford’s expectations. what do you mean by "with the developer"? the videos can be stored locally or in the cloud, so if the developer wanted to engineer a way to access the videos, I'm sure it's possible

You are so lucky to study in the US. The courses look so well balanced. In Indian universities, we have to take so many unnecessary courses and the course load is so much more, which is a complete waste of time. I have a bachelor's in Electrical engineering and I don't know why we were taught so many civil and mechanical engineering courses. That time could have been better spent on extracurricular activities and well-balanced life.

you definitely don't need a degree to be a good software engineer. However, if you don't have a college diploma, you will face struggles unless you have good experience. For DSA prep, I just recommend the classic resources, e.g. Leetcode + AlgoExpert.

Compared to another youtuber who complained how useless his Stanford Computer Science degree was, you really had a much better attitude and sought out courses that would help your professional career. Congrats! I went to UC Berkeley to study chemistry as a transfer student in the late 1970s, so luckily, I only had to go there for 2 years. Most of the professors that I had could care less about teaching and some were really bad. Also, often exams seemed to not be connected to the material taught almost as if they pulled out an old exam from the filing cabinet. The physics professors were better. I only took one math class, Differential equations and that professor was terrible. He would make at least one mistake each lecture and in the large class the students would jeer at him. He got back at us with an impossibly difficult final exam! Now I am retired and did well working at a few startups in biotech and pharma where I made lots of money with my employee stock options. My oldest son studied Physics at UC Davis but ended up working as an engineer like so many other Physics majors.

As a self taught software developer, I always regret not studying computer science in college. Stanford was my dream college and I even applied to it for MS in CS, but ofcourse i didn't get through because my GRE score was average and my college grades were pathetic. I feel the topics you studied at Stanford gives a really good foundation in CS. But I still want to ask you this: given that you mainly did Android development at work, how much of what you learned at Stanford actually helped you in accelerating your career? PS: Please also make a video on your Masters experience at Stanford!

Great question -- the vast majority of the coursework doesn't apply to being a better Android developer. The main value of the Stanford education was from the access it afforded, along with people you learn from and get inspiration from.

I also wanted to study CS or software engineering in college but sadly I didn't pass my final exam in high school because I failed math unless I retake it but it may take time..... And I need tutor for math.... Maybe IT industry is not for me.

@@frog6054 no its not that if someone failed math in highschool its because there missing a fundemental topic in mathamatics. review your older math materials and make suee you know how to do them and that you understand them.

@@jojygv at the time I believe the all-in cost for each year of Stanford was $40K - $50K. Didn't take out any loans due to the financial aid.

@@RahulPandeyrkp Kant is the foremost destroyer of reason, whereas Aristotle is one of the main champions of reason. If teaching different ideologies to deepen one’s thinking was the goal, how much Aristotle did you read and learn?

This seems like an awful cs curriculum. All ppl having to take into to humanities? Why? To push certain ideas on everyone? That also means people taking huge loans to fund going to a super expensive place to have courses in “Chinese family structures”, “freedom, equality, difference”, “Indian classical music”, “tennis” when what they actually (should?) want a degree in cs, or physics!! This is so crazy yet almost no one is talking about it. The degree could be done in probably 1.5-2 years if one actually studied the subject one wants a degree in. And to top it all of, once they (allegedly top universities) do offer some good subjects like philosophy they tech Kant instead of Aristotle. Education is really broken nowadays. (I’m sure some cs classes actually are good, I’m talking about learning and higher learning in general.)
