This week a deep dive into my collection of 9 Kurono Tokyo watches, an independent watch company created by genius watchmaker Hajime Asaoka.
Why do I have so many? What made me start collecting Kuronos? Will I stop at 9? Are they collectible? And which is my favourite? All these questions and quite a few more will be answered in this episode. And there’s a detailed profile of each one, a company history, and a look at what Kurono is doing to stop piracy and profiteering.
Sound good? Excellent, let’s do this.

Bought a Grand Urushi when I was in Tokyo last April. I catch myself staring at the dial for an ungodly amount of time, simply stunning!

Definitely feel like I won the lottery when I secured an order for the 2024 Anniversary Reiwa! Have to start planning an unboxing video.
You have a very beautiful collection. Currently, I can't afford to buy a Kurono watch, but I hope to purchase one of these beauties in the future. The fact that they have dimensions of 34-36mm and are built so elegantly, manually and with exceptional craftsmanship, makes this brand truly impressive. Once again, thank you for showing us your collection.
What an awesome video, currently waiting for my Toki to arrive. I know these watches cop a bit of flack due to the Miyota movements, but you are really paying for the beautiful design and dials with their unique colours and finishes. I personally think the design choices are without competition in their price point, and even well above the price point. Asaoka is willing to take risks and wear his inspirations on his sleeve without apology. Independent watchmaking at its best.
Beautiful collection. First in-depth and comprehensive review of Kurono I’ve seen. Those Analog Shift watch boxes are beautiful and a great fit. One issue: where is the “Shiro” white Chrono?
I love that your collection is so diverse! Thanks for sharing!

Damian, Thank you for the wonderful content and passion. Your original video on the Anniversary Mori influenced my purchase of the Chronograph 2. I couldn't be happier. I was one of lucky 500 to get one direct from Kurono the day of release. To whom it may concern, you should also be aware that my Chronograph sub seconds dial stopped working and the brand was extremely helpful and kind dealing with the replacement at no expense to me. Kurono Tokyo is truly a unique brand with some great value propositions and superb customer service. Keep up the good work!

wow. love your passion
It's such a fantastic brand. They sold out the most recent 34mm set in under 10 minutes and can increase the price if they want but don't. They are serious about making sure the people who are passionate about their watches get them. I'm very proud to have gotten my order through for the new 34mm Calligra. Very excited for it to come and I will never be selling it, no matter the resale price.
Hey @TheWatchGuys! Great video - thank you for sharing. Question if you see this - Have you had to get any of your Kurono collection serviced? Curious what that experience was like, what it cost, were you able to get the second hand ones serviced, etc. Thank you so much! I’m seriously thinking about getting a Kurono. I’m in Tokyo right now and stopped by the Kurono salon to try some on earlier this week. Gorgeous watches.
Fantastic video, and you've convinced me to grab a Toki, which I have found locally. Hope to pick up a GRAND URUSHI AOYAMA on an upcoming trip to Tokyo. Cheers

Hello Damian, What a collection! But how can you know that there is only 288 Toki ?
I've been reading few of the comments. And what people still don't understand is: there are 2 different kinds of collectors: speculation, and buyer because love the timepiece. I am a Kurono fan, and wish to get my hands on the Grand Akane. All the watches have a high markup. Buy what you like, without caring about the price fluctuation. Those watches will stay in my collection forever.

The first Chronograph was a Chrono domestic Japan market Chronograph 1 in association with Tic Tac. Identical to the first Chronograph 1 you mentioned in black and white. The Chronograph 1 was a revamp of a domestic model too.

Kurono has very successful marketing, I've bought Toki and love it, but it will stay the only Kurono in my collection, I don't think such high prices are justified really.

Don’t get me wrong these are gorgeous and I am a massive Japanese watch fan. However a master watchmaker using a miyota movement… come on! I’ve nothing against Miyota , I have many and have serviced quite a few . Only last week I had an 8s15 in bits. They are in many entry level watches and usually have a unidirectional wind rotor that is the noisiest rotor in the world! So I am not sure what you are getting here for £2k ? A brand, a dial design in a stainless steel case but with an off the shelf Japanese movement that I can by online cheaper than a service would cost.

If you don't care about dial, hands and case ,ok...but that's what you get here and they are spectacular. That's why it is so successful .
@MyRetroWatches
Жыл бұрын
@@Tonas80 I didn’t say that but the choice of movement is appalling. Very cheap and not the most reliable. There are many more in the Miyota range and Seiko for that matter that would do the job better. A £2k watch with a £30 movement… just think for all it’s beauty it needs a much better engine.
@Tonas80

@@MyRetroWatches I understand you didn't mean exactly as I put it, I'm not a watch expert I'm learning about it, but I see a lot of opinions regarding the moviments as the most important aspect of a watch, not so many attention to the details of a dial case and hands, for instance I'm looking for the right JLC for me but I'm very picky about the hands, I don't like the majority of JLC hands, although I understand the heritage and great moviments they have built in their history.
@watch_wave
Жыл бұрын
@@MyRetroWatches first off the movement is not $30. It is the premium 90s5, not in the 8 tier. Second, it costs the same as an ETA 2824. At the end of the day the price accounts for more than just the movement when you are getting a watch overviewed from a master watchmaker. The strong bias of swiss over Japanese watchmaking still exists today sadly.
Kurono watches, whilst the dial is pretty, it using standard Miyota 90S5 movements. Nothing wrong with this but they should not try to hide this fact. At least they should use 904L steel if they are special.
@watch_wave
Жыл бұрын
They've never tried to hide that fact. It's a completely Japanese watch, would you rather them source a swiss eta and ruin the design language of the watch? For 2k you're not going to get an In-house hajime movement. They also use a special hot and cold forging process resulting in a denser, harder case with less imperfections. 316L is harder than 904L to begin with. Please do your research before belittling a brand based on misinformation.

This video made me feel bad for my only Kurono watch, the Calendrier Type 1 (16:18 & 20:06). Actually I'm not a fan of this watch because of it's difficulty reading the time. Unless you're outside in the sun, you'll barely see the hands. It feels just like a jewelry instead of a watch. BTW Kurono Tokyo should pay you for this video, if they haven't yet.

It's funny that people are so biased that it uses a premium miyota instead of a swiss eta that costs exactly the same. MAD1 also uses Miyota and yet no one has an issue with that. Calling this a fashion watch is just insanely ignorant. Konstantin Chaykin uses etas so does that make his watches fashion watches? At the end if the day if you can't hide your bias against Japanese watchmaking or do more than two seconds of research into the watchmaking process or understand that it is overviewed by a master watchmaker then you shouldn't be contributing to the watch community in any way.

@@watch_wave Crawl back into your hole to enjoy your Miyota watches and fantasize about owning real watches. My collection is comparable to Damian's, and I do own every iteration of Grand Seiko's spring drive movements - quite likely more money in Japanese time pieces than you will ever spend. MAD1 was a fun self challenge for Max to build a good looking fidget spinner for folks who cannot afford a Legacy machine, while Chaykin's jokers are fashion watches (it doesn't mean folks should not enjoy them if they like the design).

@@stephenc1337 Haha cope harder troll. If you were a real Japanese watch enthusiast you would see that there is nothing wrong with this watch at the price point. I'm glad you have a collection of the most basic middle tier Japanese watch in GS spring drives that are now as common as Rolex though. Everybody owns those, that doesn't make you special. But please continue on acting like a petulant child that waves his first paycheck. Claiming to buy hype timepieces and having an understanding of horology are not the same.
