*With a Eurail pass, there's a tip that saves money and time. Take overnight trains between cities.* Adapt to the movement and your lodging is free. The time saving comes from leaving one city in the evening and starting to see the next the following morning. No days wasted traveling. Also, beds in hostels are more likely to be available if you drop by early in the morning.

Looking at your travel map I can see the value of planning an itinerary ahead of time so that you can make the best use of time and money. I live in London and travelled solo to most of these cities. Research and planning is the key. There's so much you could have done in Barcelona in itself. It took me 2 days to plan what I want to see and do, book accommodation plan my travel locally and pre-book the entry tickets where I wanted to go. Because of pre-planning I could see a lots of things and see what Barcelona has to offer.

I'm planning 3-4 weeks in July-August. I would like to go into it without prebooking any accomodation prior to the trip, maybe a day or two before when I've gotten on the move. I would just need a decent place to sleep. Is it doable or too naive? And when travelling with a larger backpack, where do you keep it all day? Ideally I would move around with a daypack.

If you're staying at hostels, most of them have lockers you can keep your bags in. I recommend bringing a padlock, though, as they don't always provide them. If they don't have lockers, sometimes reception can keep your bags for you behind the counter or in a separate room while you're out for the day. Good luck with your trip!
