Very interesting seeing your creative setup & workholding solutions. I’m curious about the “spotting in” I’ve never seen anyone do that. Could you possibly elaborate?

Hi, "spotting in" is best explained as a guide or 'paper trail' along a line, so should the line be erased for any reason, the spots will likely remain leaving a tell tail mark. Equally, if cross hairs are a reference point for another action like you see in my video, put a very small spot using a sharp centre punch on the centre of the cross, then if you use dividers with one point in the spotted centre to sweep an arch, it reduces the possibility of the dividers slipping. This is used in engineering especially if some of the parts have to hang around for days or weeks. It's also used by engineers to confirm both forward and backward measurement after fabrication or between operations as a guide only, because people do make mistakes. needles to say, laying lines or marking out, is a very complicated subject. hope this little foray into spotting or spotting in helps regards

Who needs that? Fifty years ago when I was still an apprentice I took a close look at a new drill and then sharpened all of my drills freehand! To date, there has not been anyone who has not cut.

some have the knack ... some don't. I can usually sharpen well enough to create a hole, but to get it to drill as evenly as possible, sharpening under controlled, measured conditions would be the best, and quickest, way to get it.

Four months to make! ,could have learnt to sharpen properly in that time.

Hi, thanks for your comment, I can sharpen by hand and I made the sharpener because I can. I can only afford one day per week on the video because, I am very busy with other projects. Cheers.
