I have spent almost 20k on my teeth so far due to a lot of root canals and crowns and 8 tooth extractions that I’ve been paying for out of pocket. Dental trauma is such a real thing and I admire you so much for speaking up about it. I was always good at brushing my teeth but flossing would hurt and make my gums bleed so I didn’t want to do it. After a very bad dental experience I didn’t go back until 4 years later at which point the damage was done and I’m still paying for it. Take care of your teeth people! It’s so so so important! 🦷

@@christinamarin4875 If you are able to, you may consider requesting referral to an Endodontist. They are specialists in root canals and related procedures; just like an orthodontist or oral surgeon, they are specialists in that particular area; should be easy breezy. Once you’re numb, you may even fall asleep during treatment!:)

@@christinamarin4875 they numb you a lot so they are painless! They sound a lot scarier than they are. I’m going for one on Friday 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ it’s a lot harder when the tooth becomes infected to the point of pain. The pain is a lot scarier than the actual procedure. They aren’t cheap but if you have insurance to cover I would get it done sooner rather than later. Dental stuff doesn’t ever get better it only gets worse if not fixed and treated properly! Don’t be scared! It only takes about an hour! ❤️🦷

Bleeding gums is a sign of gingivitis. May seem counterintuitive, but a deep cleaning and flossing regularly helps to reverse early signs.

As a dentist I would like to clarify that the gums don't die. What Adrienne is referring to is most likely the colour of the root of the tooth being visible through the gums. The tooth gets darker when it's dead or had a root canal.

I, literally, had to stop this video 4x to cry because it resonated with me so much. Thank you so much for making this video, Adrienne. I am 63 yo and it's so crazy how much things have advanced over the years but the whole dental thing was so trauma-filled for me. This vide is a BIG "aha" moment for me. So strange how so much good is coming out of the last 3 years of craziness. I can honestly say "thank you" pandemic for giving us all a "time out" - to learn what and who is important in life, hopefully, all of us learning that self love is everything. Thank you KZread and your algorithms who put content in my feed like this that help me as I realize how deeply and vastly my healing journey is taking me. It's not just the weight or the gray hair. It's not just the "imperfections" that through life, many of us try to hide or camouflage so that no one will notice and hurt or humiliate us. It's the burden we carry deeply inside, that causes us to shield our expressions of joy, that makes us feel unworthy, that makes us accept less than our value because we attach the lessening of our sense of value to these "imperfections." This video unlocked trauma I have felt since my first dental crown in the 5th grade. Yes. I'm 63, but healing never stops. I am so grateful to experience this even though it is at this age.

I’m someone that has struggled with my teeth for over 20 years of my life. It’s a horrible way to go through life and like you, my mother wasn’t able to afford dental work. When I became an adult, I didn’t have any dental knowledge so I just went out every day being half the person I am because o couldn’t smile or laugh without ppl staring at me. Now, I’m at a point in life where I have dental insurance and a plan in place to get oral cosmetic surgery once and for all! I’ll be 40 this year! I want to be able to REALLY smile on that day!

  • @kj3735
    @kj3735 Жыл бұрын

I used to work at a dental school in Southern California. It is absolutely the best option if you cannot afford dental work in a dental office. They have to be a whole year in the classroom and observing and pass certain prerequisites to even touch a patient. So you are in good hands. Everything has to be double checked by an instructor who is a seasoned dentist. The pediatric department was very busy for us. They are already dentists. But they are specializing in children’s dentistry. So they are not practicing, they are actual dentists. You’re very lucky that you lived near a dental school that could take you in 😊🦷🪥 the dental school that I worked for was big in missionary work. So they would go to other countries and help children and adults get dental work. Also, a couple times a year they would open up the school to do free dental work on the public. A lot of people are afraid of dental work and that’s what keeps them from taking care of their teeth. It’s only expensive when you don’t go every year for your exam and cleaning. That’s when things start to break down, and you get cavities. As you can tell, I am pretty passionate about it Lol a lot of my family is in the dental field too 🦷😁 Your smile looks beautiful!❤️

I grew up having crooked teeth on the top and bottom so there was no way of hiding them unless I covered my mouth with my hand or by smiling and not showing my teeth. Crazy enough I did not get bullied in school, but got bullied as an adult. If people would understand that many of us do take care of our teeth but can't afford dental work. Fortunately I was able to save money to get Invisalign and it changed my life. 2 years later I am now able to smile showing my teeth with confidence for the 1st time since I was a kid. However, I still find myself covering my mouth at times when I am at work or with a group of people, so that's something I am still working on similar to what Adrienne mentioned in her story.

Wow Adrienne, this couldn't have come at a better time. I am getting a dental implant after YEARS of work on my teeth. In a nutshell, in grade 5, a few friends and I were running around and I fell. My front adult tooth fell and I had to wear a removable tooth throughout elementary and high school. At some points it would break and that was humiliating. As a kid, I was always so embarrassed and scared it would break. To this day, I still have dreams of my fake tooth breaking. I've had braces, a 'Maryland bridge,' a root canal on the tooth next to it because that one started to die, etc. Etc. Thousands and thousands of dollars later, I'm now 30 years old and finally getting my implant after years and years of temporary fixes. In the meantime, I've had to wear invisaligns with a removable tooth but as an adult, I've grown comfortable to talk openly about it & I've found that every time I have, there has always been someone in the room who has either gone through something similar themselves or knows someone who has. Thank you for being open and vulnerable on a topic that doesn't really get talked about. Thank you for calling it "trauma" because tbh I never thought of it as that. But looking back and processing it as an adult, it really did impact me on a subconscious level that I didn't even realize. Sending lots of love and gratitude. ❤

This makes me wonder when Medicaid started to cover braces. I too grew up in NY (born in 1990) in the projects and my family was poor. And there were five kids. I was lucky enough to get braces and I desperately needed them. My teeth were jacked like seriously I had teeth in places where teeth should not be. I know my parents could never afford braces so I’m thankful for the free dental care that NY provided bc I know damn well my whole life could have been different if I had those teeth.

First of all, thank you for sharing your story. I have watched your movies, I didn't notice anything about your teeth until you talked about it on The Real, but I still believed that those teeth on your movies were your natural ones... your new smile is beautiful and looks so natural. I have an open bite. I also want to fix it, but I can't afford braces. Your story is so inspirational that I am now again motivated to fix my teeth.

I love your smile! And it’s so good to see you so smiley in pictures and videos! My teeth are BY FAR my biggest insecurity however I battle mentally with getting them done because on one end I’d love to feel confident and comfortable in my smile, but as a full time working single mon it’s hard to justify spending the money on myself when I could use it for bills/necessities etc. I also struggle because I feel it’s important to teach my son to love yourself as God made you. Seeing you find so much happiness in getting them done makes me a little more intrigued to take the leap! Thank you for this insight!

Thank you for making this video! As a dental hygienist I cannot stress enough how important your smile/teeth are! I’m so sorry you had to go through that dental trauma but I’m so happy that you finally have your dream smile! Even I am insecure about my smile. I’m going to start my second round of orthodontic treatment with Invisalign to fix a few areas. Dental insurance is very inexpensive and even if you don’t have it, many dental offices offer a discount for self paying patients. Always ask for a discount, 90% of the time they will give you something. A beautiful smile is a huge confidence booster. Take care of yourself everyone. Let’s focus on self care this new year.

Omg I’m soooo glad you made this video Adrienne. I have been so insecure my whole life cuz of dental trauma. My mom died at 5 years old so my first set of teeth were black. I also went to NYU a for a root canal lol I know them days. Hahah😮 I wish I can get veneers or cosmetic dental work. I pray about it all the time. I have such trauma. I was a DV survivor and I’m a mom of a 4 yr old girl. And I am so sad all the time. I need an implant and can’t afford it now. I’m so sad sometime. I pray n beg the Lord that one day he will give me a new smile. I don’t remember when was last time I smiled fully. I miss it😢 you look beautiful Adrienne! You inspired me by sharing this topic because it’s a secret I shamefully hate talking about. That’s why I take care of my daughters teeth seriously. Your so blessed you can afford this dental work. I wish! Even the dentist I went to last month in Nj said “he’s overwhelmed” by my situation. Makes me very sad. One day one day the Lord will bless me with a new smile :-/. Thanks for sharing sis! The Lord is def using you! ❤😊

I can definitely relate to your story Adrienne... most of my life I hated my smile to the point where I hated taking pictures of myself. Even when I did take pics, I did not like to show my teeth at all -- this led to anxiety and insecurity about my physical appearance. My teeth looked like it was pushed inwards and I had several overlapping tooths! So fast forward Jan 2021 in the height of the pandemic this was the moment I said to myself it's time to go to the dentist (I had to do two root canals and 1 tooth extraction) and get braces. Very much like you said, my family could not afford braces either but after finally stepping into an exciting launch of my career I could finally afford the treatment. Acknowledging how expensive it can be to invest in dental health, it's TRULY WORTH IT 100%. Currently, I am in the final stages of my Invisalign treatment and I've never felt more confident about my smile -- this was a truly life changing experience for me to the point where I'm socializing more often and I'm smiling way more!

Adrienne thank you for sharing omg I never heard anyone else talk about this. When I was in 6th grade I also chipped my teeth and had root canals bc the root was dead. In jr high I struggled with my smile bc I also had grey in my teeth. I would subconsciously always put my hand in front of my mouth when I laughed and not smile as big bc I didn’t want anyone to see it. 😢 happy I have veneers now and looking to get them redone in future ❤️

I know this was about her teeth but I thought Adrienne looked adorable in her childhood pictures. Mama Nilda had some adorable children who then had adorable children themselves. Beauty runs deep in that family. But I do understand being insecure about your smile because I am as well. Though I liked Adrienne's teeth before I think Dr. V did a great job. And I admire Adrienne's transparency.

It's crazy how similar our stories are! My sister and I were doing laser tag when we were young. I was following too closely behind her and she turned around quickly so her laser tag gun hit me in the face. I chipped a bottom tooth. It wasn't as severe as yours but I remember it was sooo senstive to the air for the rest of the day. I believe my orthodontist at the time actually fixed it for me because I did have braces and I was seeing her more often than my dentist. I do agree abou investing in things that matter but having the money to afford braces is defintely a privilege. I'm so grateful to have had them and to this day, I still wear my retainer at night. We barely had the means to get them and I remember we went a whole year without going to the orthodontist because something had happened and we couldn't afford the monthly payments (even though we had our braces on).

Hi Adrienne, my name is Sabine and I live in Toronto, Canada. Thank you so much for your testimony. It gives me hope. I have my own dental trauma. My teeth turned yellow and I was 17 and I have had other issues that led to multiple crows, all yellow. Recently, I have had two teeth extracted in place that make me feel insecure. I am dying to get my teeth fixed once and for all and to get the beautiful white smile of my dream. Thank you again, Sabine.❤

Thank you thank you for sharing this. I am 43 and my teeth were always the root of my insecurities. I was teased as a kid for my gap teeth and like you grew up with parents who couldn’t afford it. When I was older in my early 30’s I was able to afford braces, but then when the braces came off I was left with a missing tooth hence the horrible gaps. I wore my dental flipper for the longest time but was finally able to afford an implant and some veneers in the front. You are so right it is traumatic and it’s embarrassing to admit. And people do judge you based on your teeth. Thank you again for addressing this issue:)
