My Deaf Story

I decided to tell my deaf story short. I left out a few details and of course I was nervous so I repeated myself a lot and messed up a little with my signs.

Nice to see you put yourself out here on KZread. I was also born premature. I had a lot of ear infections as a baby. I have had countless surgeries on my ears. My bones in my left ear have deteriorated away. I've had donor bones & prosthesis but lost my left ear nerve & hearing completely a few years back. I've been trying to learn sign. I'm not around it daily so it is hard to retain it. I hope you keep on doing videos signing & speaking. It helps so much. 😊

I'm hearing , I've had a friend during my childhood that was deaf , a friend in high school that was hard of hearing - he didn't sign , my best friend her sister is deaf in one ear and going slowly deaf in the other ear .. so I'm enrolled in college to learn proper ASL. Kids are cruel but never be nervous of who you are . I love this video .

hello 'open book' Michella! I loved your video and wish you well. I loved the fact that you are so comfortable in your school for deaf and blind students. In England we have so much integration - where school children previously had the option of specialist schools. I have seen deaf children struggling miserably in 'mainstream' schools - and clearly not getting the amount of specialist help that would help them gain a far higher standard of education. Good luck with developing your confidence in signing. You also have the advantage of lovely clear speech. Win, win!

Ella you are so beautiful ! Even though going to a hearing school was a bad experience socially there is one thing I can see that is very positive. Your English is perfect! I think the biggest misconception that hearing people have about deaf culture is that they think ASL is English only spoken with your hands. Even though ASL uses English words and it's spelling it is an entirely differently language. The grammar is entirely different . I am very interested in bridging the gap between deaf and hearing people! if deaf people would learn more English and hearing people would learn more ASL we can bridge that gap. Ella you have the best of both worlds! I wish you the best!

Who else has one of those stories back when they first got their hearing aids and thought they were going crazy XD I remember going through the house with my grandma (We both got ours at the same time and she's my best friend) And just naming all the things that made noise XD The A/C was the hardest one to figure out where it was coming from cause it was always on (It was summer) so we just thought the hearing aids were annoying and didnt wear them unless we wanted to go out in public or socialize, It took us awhile to figure out that the noise went away when we stepped out of the house

I am turning 17 & I have always had a hard time with hearing but my mom didn't believe me growing up. About 6 months ago I finally convinced her to take me to see an audiologist because it was really affecting my schoolwork. Turns out I have a degenerative type of hearing loss. It is genetic and I got it from my father's side of the family, who we don't know. The doctor estimated with how aggressive mine is that I will be 100% deaf by the time I'm in my mid-20's. I'm trying to learn sign language but it's hard because my mom is still pretty much in denial so she is making it difficult. But next month we will be looking into some hearing aids that my audiologist thinks might be able to help for a little bit.

I used to be fluent in Portugese SignLanguage, then i came to Canada and they didn't have a hearing school students together with deaf school students like in Portugal. in Canada they wanted to put me in a only deaf school and i would not be talking. so i refused. i dont want to lose speech as my mom taught me since i was born. i speak very well to the point people don't think im hard of hearing but i am. i wish i could use sign language but i haven't used it for 8 years and so i've lost it pretty much all. the only thing i've been doing to keep me in the Language world is learning vocal Language, so i know Portugese, Spanish, English and i'm learning Japanese.

That's great you wanted to share some of your experiences being deaf. It is totally great you are attending a school for the deaf and blind because this way, you can easily use sign language to understand 100% of what is being said. Unfortunately, for many deaf people, they are forced to go through many things/methods to become "hearing" at the wishes of their parent(s). Too many hearing people don't realize the disadvantages of forcing their child(ren) to go through oral methods, etc. I have a couple of questions for you. Do your family (parents, siblings, extended relatives) know sign language? Once you and/or your parents knew of your predicament of your hearing loss, how did you all find out about the school for the deaf/blind?

Hey Ella (and Micha, as you propably will read that as well ;) ) from a random stranger in the internet. I just found your video here because I was interested in hearing about other peoples lifes, especially if they I am not able to perceive the world the way they do, and after looking some of your other videos I am pretty interested in what you guys will be up to in the future. And you discreibed yourselves as "awkward" and I would not say so, it is just diferrent, as there are no two people who are the same, but that is what makes us human. Well, I shouldn't get to deep into talking casually here. Anyway, just wanted to say you two are interesting people with a propably very different life to what I have and you aren't awkward to me ;)

Hi Ella, as a industrtial design student I decided to do a project for people with hearing loss. I think it's great that you share your experiences, and glad to hear that you found a good place in school. Keep up the positive spirit. :) I was wondering if you would like to comment on my project. The product idea is a based on stylish spectacles that have a small screen, microphone and speaker; the glasses would be linked to your smartphone that runs the software. How it works: speech is picked up by the microphone, and converted by your phone into text which is directly displayed in the glasses. By this I aim to make communication more direct and enable people to have eye contact while doing so. In what way do you think such a concept enables you to do things more easily in life? If you don't not like this idea, I'm also curious for your opinion. Cheers :)

Touching story. You say you taught yourself ASL? I've been watching Bill Vicker's videos, but it seems painfully slow. You were however easy to follow for me, about 90%, so I guess I'm learning. Old dogs can learn new tricks, given enough time. Anyway, I'm happy for you that things are going well for you. Post more. It helps to see the signs along with the spoken word. Not too many do this.

Hi! I am hearing, but I want to learn ASL. I already know a lot of signs, but since I am not fluent and don't know how to do proper ASL sentence structure, I always chicken out of signing. Do you know how to do full-blown fluent ASL with the non-English word order yet? Do you usually speak while you sign? Do you think many deaf people would give me a hard time if I signed in English word order? If you read this ans answer my questions, thanks a bunch! I don't have any deaf friends to talk to, really, but I do get deaf customers at my deli job here and there.

Yup! Confidence is so difficult to have when it comes to signing!

I am in the same situation that you are and I'm almost certain that the deaf won't judge you if you sign something wrong aha, they will probably just be a little bit confused

Hey, I love your video! I want to learn ASL too because (and this may sound a bit funny) i want to work with kids who are hard-hearing/deaf. I know that as a hearing person it is difficult to get a job like that and it would be difficult for me because i like to talk hahah. But i want to try at least. I want to make a difference in the world and if that is the way to do so then i would be glad. People who are a bit different have the same rights as people "who fit in society". I want to cooperate with that. How did you cope with being hard-hearing in a normal hearing family? And how did they cope with it? Love to hear the answer. Lots of love, Wolflover18 xxx

You did Brilliantly. I speak British Sign Language (BSL), how do you find it talking to other people from outside of the American Sign Language (ASL) People?? I’m not deaf myself but I learned from my cousin and deaf children who speak Makaton.
